Hi Sajeeva Rao, pls note Ramadan is not 40 days but only 30 or 29 days depending on the moon sighting, fasting in this month is a commandment of god, holy Quran was also revealed in this month, muslims also take out Zakaat (charity/alms) in this month.
you should go for one of the iftar parties with your muslim friends or neighbors to know more about Ramadan.
i am sure you will get some more explanations from other muslims on this subject.

Q. Do we have to fast?

A. Fasting is a Fardh (must) and is one of the five pillars of Islam. It is made Fardh in the Qur\'an and Hadith.

Q. Why do we fast?

A. We fast because Allah (s.w.t.) told us to fast to have more piety (Taqwa). Also fasting makes us healthier as the Prophet (s.a.w.) said:
\"Fast and you will be healthier\". Fasting strengthens our self
discipline and help us control our desires and actions. When we fast, we see the food, wish to eat it but can\'t, and hence can relate to the poor and needy who see the food and cannot buy it, which will motivate us to help the poor and needy. Fasting also makes us appreciate the food and sustenance given to us by Allah (s.w.t.). In non-fasting days, many people get bored by seeing the same menu of food and forget to thank Allah (s.w.t.). During fasting, however, any food looks delicious and we get to appreciate all the food at sunset. The month of Ramadan is also a very important unifying factor among Muslims. It brings the Muslims together until each community becomes like a family when eating together and praying together a great deal on daily basis.

Q. What is so special about Ramadan?

A. Ramadan is the best of the months of the years. The Qur\'an was revealed in it as stated in the Qur\'an. Also the rewards are greatly multiplied in Ramadan if the intention is sincere. The gates of Paradise
(Jannah) are open, the gates of Hell (Jahannam) are closed, and the Shayatin are tied up as the Prophet (s.a.w.) told us. Also the fasting of Ramadan can wipe out all the wrong doings committed before if we avoid the great ones (Kaba\'ir) that need repentance (Tawbah). Qiam (praying at night) in the month of Ramadan can also wipe out all the wrong doings committed before if the great ones are avoided. This does not mean than we cannot do wrong in Ramadan because Shaitan is tied up; people can make the job of Shaitan much easier by coming to him rather than he comes to them. There are so many Hadiths that talk about reward in Ramadan; just to quote some, the Prophet (s.a.w.) said: \"Whoever fasted Ramadan out of belief in it and sincerely seeking the reward from Allah, all his past wrong doings will be forgiven\". He also said: \"Whoever prayed Qiam throughout Ramadan, all his past wrong doings will be forgiven\". It is a good idea to pay Zakah of assets during this month since the reward will be multiplied In Sha\' Allah. Agricultural products Zakah is paid during the harvest time.

Q. Some people abstain only from food, drinks, and intercourse from dawn till dusk in Ramadan without abstaining from evil talk and wrong doings; is there fasting correct?

A. Technically, there fasting is corrected but won\'t get them any reward. The Prophet (s.a.w.) said: \"Whoever does not leave evil talk and working according to it, then Allah does not need him to leave his food and drink\". He also said: \"So many fasting people get only hunger and thirst from there fasting, and so many praying at night people get only staying up from their prayer\". Abu-Hamid Al-Ghazali says that abstaining from food, drinks, and intercourse is the fasting of the masses; abstaining from wrong doings is the fasting of the special Muslims; and
abstaining from worrying about material life is the fasting of the
special of the special (the elite) of the Muslims.

What else we do in Ramadan?
Zakat (approximately 2% of the wealth should be given as Zakat (charity) to poor.
Every year in the month of Ramadan, all Muslims fast from first light until sundown, abstaining from food, drink, and sexual relations. Those who are sick, elderly, or on a journey, and women who are pregnant or nursing are permitted to break the fast and make up an equal number of days later in the year. If they are physically unable to do this, they must feed a needy person for every day missed. Children begin to fast (and to observe the prayer) from puberty, although many start earlier.

Although the fast is most beneficial to the health, it is regarded principally as a method of self purification. By cutting oneself off from worldly comforts, even for a short time, a fasting person gains true sympathy with those who go hungry as well as growth in one\'s spiritual life.

Setting the Intention

When Ramadan begins, any person who intends to fast must openly or silently express to Allah the following:

\"I intend to fast today for the sake of Allah. O Allah, make it easy for me and accept it from me.\"

When it is time to break the fast at sunset, the Muslim should say:

\"O Allah, For Your Sake I fasted, in You I believe, in You I trust, and with the food You provide I break my fast.\"

Fasting at a Glance

1.5 billion Muslims of the world celebrate their holiest month of Ramadan every year. Ramadan is the 9th month in the lunar year. During this month, healthy Muslim adults observe Fasting during the daylight hours. Muslim Fasting is a total abstention from eating, drinking, and sexual relations from dawn to dusk for 29 or 30 days of the month of Ramadan. Also, avoiding immoral behavior and anger and showing compassion is part of the requirements of the fasting. The purpose of fasting is manifold. Allah (the God Almighty) mentioned in the Holy Book of the Muslims, Quran, that the fasting is prescribed for the believers as it was prescribed for the people before them, so that they may acquire self control and God-consciousness. Therefore, the purpose of the fasting is to develop God-consciousness, self-control, improvement of health by reducing or eliminating impurities from the body, and to become aware of the plight of the poor, hungry, and the sick. Ramadan is a month of spiritual consciousness and high sense of social responsibility. The fulfillment of one\'s obligations during the month is rewarded by 70 times. Fasting is one of the 5 pillars of Islam including Announcement of Faith, Salaat (praying 5 times a day), Zakaat (the right of the poor on the wealth of the financially able), Fasting during the month of Ramadan, and Hajj (once a life time pilgrimage to Kaaba).

It is an obligation on every adult and healthy Muslim to fast during the month of Ramadan. The month of Ramadan is also the month in which the Holy Quran was sent down from 7th level of heaven to the 1st level, from where it was revealed to Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) in piecemeal basis over a period of 23 years. It is a very joyous occasion for the Muslims of the world. Muslims fast during the day and pray and read Quran during the part of the night. There is a special night called the Night of Power, which is mentioned in the Quran, as a night of mercy and light and worshiping during this night is better than 1,000 months. During this night Quran was sent to the 1st level of heaven. Allah (the God Almighty) send down special angels during this night to pray for the mercy of Allah (the God Almighty) and salvation for the believers.

Unlike common calendar, which is Solar based, Islamic calendar is Lunar based. It does not mean that Muslims worship moon. It is simply another way to count days of the month and the year. Like all Islamic months, Ramadan, the 9th lunar month, begins after sighting Crescent, and not the birth of the new moon. All healthy Muslim adult including homemakers, school-going kids around the age of 13, factory workers, businessmen and others among them will be fasting. Muslim get up very early to take their sahoor, a pre-dawn meal before starting their fast.

At the completion of month of Fasting, Muslims all over the world celebrate their holiday of Eidul-Fitr. It is a true thanksgiving for a Muslim believer for having the opportunity to obey Allah (the God Almighty) by observing Fasting. It is celebrated on the 1st day of 10th lunar month, Shawwaal. The holiday begins with Muslims putting on their best preferably new clothes and going to the Eid congregation. Eid congregations are very large gathering of Muslim men, women and children across the world. Afterwards, people greet each other with hugs and handshakes. The children receive gifts. After the congregation, Muslims visit each other at their homes and hold lunches or dinners for family and friends.

I am thanking all the participants for giving much and more information on Ramzan. Here in the name of Ramzan one logic is there (Ramadan) in that name Hindus Gods Name Ram is used. Our selfish leaders like V.H.P, MIM etc leaders just for the sake of votes they will try to disturb our unity. But they and their politics will fail for ever in India why because our India is a country of Unity in Diversity. I am inviting all others too to participate and give us much and more information about Ramzan or (Ramadan)

One Side Muslims are celebrating the Ramzan by doing fasting and the other side hindus are celebrating Ayyappa by wearing malas. And one morething the Hindus will worship Lord Venkateshwara (Tirupathi) and it is one of the famous temples in the world. That God Lord Venkateshwara married a Muslim Woman her name was Bibinanchari (Godess) that is our Indian culture.

uh, thats just folklore. Even my Grand mother told me the same story. Apparently Padmavati devi is also called Bibi nanchari, and she is not muslim but daughter of a king, parvata raju.

Venkateshwara swamy has two wives, first one is Laxmi or alivelu mangamma or sridevi as in his original Avatar (Vishnu) and then in his human avatar (curse of Laxmi?) he marries Padmavati Devi or Bhudevi(earth) or Bibi Nanchari as some people call her.

I knew the origni of the Bibi Nanchari story, but cant recollect it now.
Hi Sajeeva, you are right, it is interesting to note that Ramzan contains the name of Lord Ram, you will find it very amazing to know that in the Holy Quran there is a chapter called The Cow, i.e also a revered diety in our country, and there is chapter called Kawakeb meaning Stars, also many of us follow astro science and so on.

In fact I strongly recommend you to read a book \'Quran and Science\' by a French Dr. Maurice Bucaille, pls check out this link: http://www.islam101.com/science/bucaille.html

Joseph (brother of Jesus?) I did not mean that Sridevi is Vishnu, Venkateswara swamy is Vishnu avatar. Hope that clears.

Regarding Polygamy, in Modern day India polygamy is not allowed, as you know. You cannot take a second wife without ur first wifes knowledge or permission. If ur first wife is ok with it, then u can marry another women, Religion or Law cannot stop you. I think this is applicable ot all religions except Muslims. IIRC, muslim personal law allows polygamy. Correct me if I am wrong.
If u re talking about Hindu scriptures, then I dont think polygamy was considered wrong. Again females were *comfortable* with their husbands taking a second and a third wife or so we were told.
Hinduism doesnt support polygamy nor does it condemn it.
That in my humble opinion. And its just my opinion, not based on facts. I am not well versed with Hindu scriptures.

Hi.. ZC thanks for your query :) We really appreciate

Well, Its very simple if the month of Ramzan is started or like now its going on then you may wish any muslim guy by saying \"happy ramzan\" or (Ramzan mubarak), and when the Eid day comes you may wish him \"Happy Eid\" or (Eid Mubarak) thats it.

Hope I cleared your doubt. By the way...! \"HAPPY RAMZAN TO EVERY BODY\"
