Good schools in Hyderabad

by pad » Fri Sep 19, 2003 1:29 am

Hello friends,
<br>
<br>
We are planning to return to Hyderabad (from the US) in June 2004. Our daughter is currently in 4th grade. Can someone please help me with the schools where the transition for my daughter will be less painful?

Hi Pad, I am afraid the transition may not be very painless. But, you can make the whole process relatively less painful. First, start planning from now (which, going by the post, you have already started). Rosary Convent, St. Ann’s, Stanley, St. Anthony\'s, St. Patrick\'s, etc. are some of the good ones (my list might be outdated - please chip in guys). The first three are for girls only while the others are co-ed. The other thing you can do (I am sure you might have already) is get hold of friends or relatives who went through a similar process. They will be the best source. Hope that helps. Most importantly, the first six months or one year might be a little bit difficult for your kid to adjust - academically (especially maths and science in Indian schools are of more advanced level when compared to that of the USA schools) and socially. But kids can get over it much faster than us elders. In any case, very best wishes to you, and your kid.

BTW, don\'t construe the lack of response to your posting as an indication that we don\'t care. No, we do care. But, most of us (I might be wrong) here are singletons, that includes me too, and are yet to experience the pangs of parenthood and the associated unavoidable travails. Simply put, most of us are totally ignorant of these issues.

Good schools in Hyderabad

Welcome back to Hyderabad. I am a teacher as well as a mom. I would recommend Vidya Ranya as the best for any student coming from the US. I have taught in the US and think that this school is the best for children coming from the US. Don\'t worry about the math and science. If your child was at grade level in the US, you don\'t have to worry about anything. When I was thinking of moving, I looked at this school and was very happy with the curriculum and the teachers. The other schools are good but very hard to adapt as the system is different and the child will be confused. You need to be very careful in this matter as you don\'t want the child to start disliking the school. This is because the teaching methods in the US are hands on and here they are the rote method. I hope this helps you in some way.

Thanks for chipping in Naz. So Pad, now you know whom to contact. Who can be a better guide than a teacher who has seen both the education systems and herself is a mom, too? Naz, please give some more details (application forms, when the admissions start, etc.) so that Pad (and also other swadesh returning parents) can start working on them.

I think parents should start working on the application forms and the other things from now on. It would be a good idea to visit the school right now and let them know that you are interested as a prospective parent. When I applied for my child I remember I was interviewed with my husband. This was about 7 years ago. A personal visit and getting all the details from the school\'s office would be the first step as rules change every year. Vidya Ranya is close to the secretariat, near the British Library.

This is my favorite subject guys!
<br>
<br>
Hi Pad and Naz, this academic year my daughter was just lucky to get into (class I) Rosary Convent which is a 100 yr old institute in Hyderabad (one of the few best in India). You are saying that you are returning in June so it will not help since the admission process begins in January and ends in June (classes will already have started in June). You need to coordinate with your family or friends in Hyderabad to get application forms and start making rounds of the schools. Follow-up is important. It will be ideal if your wife and daughter gets here by March at least, ahead of you.
<br>
<br>
If you are originally from here I am sure you are familiar with some schools already. My choice is: 1. Rosary Convent 2. Nasr 3. St. Ann\'s. If you are staying in Banjara Hills or Jubilee Hills area then you can also try 1. Meridien 2. Chirac and so on. I am out of the country these days but I heard that the Bishop Cotton school from Bangalore has opened up in Hyderabad recently. So this will also be a good choice for you.
<br>
<br>
Plus all kind of big and small schools are openening in Hyderabad every year, but I believe quality education for our girls is a must so I wish you all the best.

I agree with what you are saying but we need to know that a child moving from the US will have a lot of difficulty. First of all, just the move from one place to another is truamatic and then another curriculum to deal with is hard for any child. In order to make the transition easier, I would prefer to make sure that the school a child goes to has a similar curriculum and atmosphere. The schools you have mentioned are great but they are not geared for a child who is moving from the US. If a parent starts the process of getting to know the school and the admission rules now, the child stands a better chance of getting into the desired school in time for the new school year. Best of luck.

Thanks a lot for all your responses. I am glad I asked you folks for help. I was born and raised in Hyderabad. But left the place about 13 years ago. So the Hyderabad and the schools I knew then are completely different now. But all your responses are of great help. Thanks again!

Why does no one speak of HPS, the best school in Hyd? The education there is great, and the teachers friendly! Is it true that the kids there have become snobs and highly spoiled, \'cos I had some of my best years of my life in that school?

I suggest that you admit your daughter in a Madarassa or a Shishu mandir depending on ur faith, but if you are a Christian admit her in any of the convents. From your post I gather that your daughter has already had too much of western influence and \'we\' (yes we, this is India and once you land here \'I\' becomes \'we\') should try and negate this influence. Buy her some \'parikinis\' and ger rid of all those jeans and frocks. We Indian fundoos don\'t like anything \'western\'. Also if your child is wearing frocks, then it wil have negative influence on my daughter as she too may ask for a frock. Again you see we don\'t want western influence on our kids. But hey, we dont mind the English language. Though it was our British master\'s language we whole heartedly accepted it and we are no more considered english dogs.

Hi Neeraja! Yes, Vidya Ranya is upto tenth class. I think you should get your son admitted into the school. It is a great school that exploits a child\'s creativity. I hope your son gets admission in this school.

Oops, fumbled up in the earlier post. I mistook Naz the poster for a school\'s name. But I heard about another school where Diya Mirza studied, something like Naz(?) High school... It\'s a good school, but for girls only I guess.

Just for the record, Diya Mirza did her High School in Vidya Ranya and her +2 in Nasr School. Yeah Vidya Ranya is a good school. It\'s supposed to be \'different\'. Though as a loyalist (and a realist, too) my vote would go to St. Ann\'s, Sec\'bad. Another ex-Miss World, Diana Hayden, is from the same School. I know this piece of info doesn\'t make a difference as to whether a school is \"good\" or not but speaks about beauty queens that came to mind. You must try Gitanjali (Devshala, Begumpet), too. And to the best of my knowledge, St. Patricks is an all boys school and not a co-ed. Good luck to you and your daughter!
Whether you think you can, or you think you can't, you are right.

Transition for a child is generally easier, more so at that age. The initial hassles will certainly be there. You just give her the strengths/ comfort/confidence that she needs to get adjusted to our society. She will find it a way lot easier to make friends if she remains down to earth and simple instead of putting on airs. Whenever I come to India, my child is always looked at as if he is a hero of some sorts, (just because he lives in the US) by most of the people with which he does not find himself at ease. The kind of schools that you may find good depends upon what you would like to instill in your child. JK\'s schools in Madanapalli is not based on any particular religion but is based on a thought process and in turn studies whereas certain religious schools instill faith in their religion and studies. There are other schools which give importance to studies and just studies. Your choice to move back to India could mean that you want your child to grow as an Indian amongst your family and friends. Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan (excellent scores and some amts of religion is taught), Gitanjali (good scores and brings up practical kids), St.Anns, (good school, good attitude, good scores...) Vidyaranya, Taraporewala Montessori, Lumbini Montessorri (the children here develop into sensitive people which is way off of the practical world, where my son studied while in India). HPS makes spoilt brats and imbibes western culture. I understand it has drugs and alcohol and smoking and money flowing.
<br>
<br>
I personally would like to put my child in a school like Bharatiya Vidya Bbhavan, St. Anns, or Gitanjali and the likes and stay close to the school that he is attending so that there is that much less to commute for him. And, hey, if she is gonna go for tutions , to Ramaiahs\'s classes and the likes of it, it should be in the vicinity of Nallakunta/Himayatnagar areas...
<br>
<br>
So may be St. Anthony\'s and St. Georges\' Grammar School. Yes, How did I forget Grammar School or St. Anthony\'s?
<br>
<br>
All the best. Did I add to your confusion? Hope not.

Hi, We are also planning to move to Hyd from US. My daughter will be in 7th grade next year. I want some info about the languages they teach in schools in hyd. In Vidyaranya, do they have both Hindi and Telugu? Is it difficult for kids returning from US to catch up with those languages. My daughter does not even know the Hindi or telugu alphabets yet. Is it too late for us to return now as she will be in 7th grade next year as far as her education is concerned..Need some info from someone who was in similar situation. Thanks.
