Good looks vis-a-vis capability

Do looks count at the interview stage? A female friend of mine, who had a very good academic trackrecord, was not given the job. She is very average looking (protruding teeth, glasses) but in hindsight I think she would have done a decent job (pun unintended) had she been taken. Do looks count at a job interview stage?

Do you know the academic track record of the person chosen for the job in place of your friend?

Of course, looks and neatness certainly matter a lot for any good job, especially for a Airline/Customer service Industry.

You know, even with average looks your friend can make some changes and compete. She needs to see a beauty consultant/designer. Improve her style and attitude. Even learning karate helps some girls (it gives inner strength).

Hi all! No, it was not for a receptionist\'s postion. But yes, it was for a job in the Customer Service Industry and, no, not the airline/hotel industry. The three people who got final offers were not as good as her academically but were good in their own right. And B, thanks for the tips. Will pass them on tactfully, if I meet her sometime.

It depends on what your definition of \"physical looks\" is. Looks as in whether a person is ugly/beautiful per se don\'t count (you don\'t have to be a model and size 2 to get a job), but when it comes to her overall \"physical appearance\" then it definitely matters. The way people dresse, carry themselves and their attitude are often overlooked since they are not considered to be very important. If she has an overbite, maybe she can get braces. If she has huge glasses, maybe she can trade them in for a smaller size or contacts. Most important of all, you have to be able to carry off whatever you are wearing with confidence :)!
