Bringing THEM Back

by Anil » Sat May 03, 2003 8:59 pm

I always wonder, if I ever had a chance to bring someone dead back alive, who would that be? (I am not speaking about personal losses because everyone of us wants to get back all of our beloveds). So, if you had a chance, who would that be and why? Here\'s a list who I want back alive (limited to Indian scenario only)

Politicians: Rajiv Gandhi
Freedom Fighters: Subhas Chandra Bose
Prime Ministers: Lal Bahadur Shastri
Singers: Kishore Kumar
Actors/Actress: Guru Dutt and Divya Bharati
Social Workers: Baba Amte

But if it is only one, then I would vote for Rajiv Gandhi. I always felt his death was very untimely. He deserved a second chance. He had everything going right after his brief astray, mostly under the influence of his notorious coterie.

Ashoka (a great leader), Kautilya (administrator), Homi Jehangir Bhabha (u\'ve got to save ur motherland from external threats), Mother Theresa (look after ur people with care) , Swami Vivekananda (enlighten their souls), Sushruta (a great doctor) - and we need a Nalanda and a Takhshila.

Dear Anil, I admire your feelings, but just to tell you, there is Nothing called \"deserving a second chance\". Once dead, dead forever. By the way, we cannot just mention few great personalities here, as you know our nation is full of Extra-Ordinary personalities like our great father of the nation \"Mahatma Gandhi\".

There has always been so much criticism against BABU that he gave more importance to the muslim victims of the 47 RIOTS than the Hindu victims. That is why my mind did not allow me to add his name to the prestigious list. Do you have any idea of Nathuram\'s statements in the court before his death penalty?

I strongly feel every individual, even the hard-core criminal, also needs a second chance. Isn\'t that what makes us really humane? As to getting \"THEM\" back, I limited to ONLY those personalities who can fit in the contemporary India. Many of you have listed historical figures - I don\'t think, neither their valour, prowess nor their machiavellian qualities would suffice or match the present situations. Simply put, they and their skills, might just be outdated (Chanakya may be an exception). As for Mahatma, with all due respect to Him, He finished His job, there\'s nothing else left for Him to do (in fact, he himself admitted it saying the onus now lays on Jawahar!)

I am not sure how much everyone has read and understood about all these people. No one is 100% perfect. I heard multiple opininons on Gandhiji, Nehru and all others freedom fighter\'s intentions in key issues. So let\'s not get into getting them back.

I don\'t claim to be an expert in history. But to the best of my knowledge, Chanakya and racism - NEVER heard or read! In fact, he was one of the earliest to envisage a unified India and not the Mughals as popularly believed. He was also the earliest to propose the federal form of government with representations from all strata of society.

It is futile to think in these lines. Gone are gone. That is History. In A P we can pray to God that Chandrababu should continue to head this state for one more term and realize our dreams.

I beg to differ KK. OK tell me, which leader is perfect? Rajiv Gandhi wasn\'t perfect. But, he had the potential and the vision and was a moderate unlike Sanjay Gandhi. And as for secularism, that\'s a farce. Its time we get over this hallucination that we are secular. Let\'s leave this discussion to some other board. Sometimes I am amused, we criticse almost every leader, past or present! May be we should start a board discussing how our leader should be ;) And Doc, it is a hypothetical question. We all know that past cannot be brought back BUT it can be repeated, isn\'t it? C\'mon, there is nothing futile in indulging some creative thinking. And I thought the word \"IF\" is enough to indicate that we are discussing an hypothetical situation.

I always rank Baba Amte high over any other social worker or philanthrophist of this era. I am averse to the idea of mixing religion with social welfare which unfortunately and intentionally or unintentionally most of the missionaries do.

I am sorry guys. I was little bit fast in giving my statement. Sometime ago I heard that Chanakya started the rules and regulations of Hindu Varna (race and profession based on color etc.) I am not sure. Believe me, I too am a poor Indian Brahmin affected by the reservation policy, but still hating racism.
MOST IMPORTANTLY, MY ANSWER TO A FRIEND THAT SILK SMITHA WAS BASICALLY A ANDHRITE. I HAVE SEEN HER WITH A YOUNG CHILD IN SPENCER PLAZA (CHENNAI) IN HER EARLY DAYS. I GOT DEEPLY PAINED ON THE DAY OF HER SUICIDE.

If I am not mistaken that was Manu (of the infamous ManuShastra) who advocated the seggregation of the society based on the caste (or more based on the duties one performs in the society). It was definitely not Chanakya.

Yeah Rajiv Gandhi\'s was a premature death. More recently, I felt strongly about Kalpana Chawla\'s untimely death. Here was a lady who had the stuff. And I\'m sure she was an inspiration to many.
Whether you think you can, or you think you can't, you are right.

How does working in NASA make someone big?? There are hundreds of ppl working for NASA. All my sympathies for her death in the accident, but I donno why ppl say that she has achieved some thing... She is just a graduate who was working for NASA. There are lakhs of such Indian graduates in the US.
