Ali, first make sure you take care of your parents, then clean up (picking up garbage) your neighborhood, and then if you still have time, let me know and I will send you some place you can volunteer... Thanks!

hello american hyderabadi... start with your Mohalla where u were born n raised... find someone in need (i am sure there are plenty). by the way, free check-ups are not going to help... who will buy them medicine prescribed by your hired doctor? my friend, just visit your orphan homes or physically challenged people (there is one in yakutpura) or go to the old age home in musheerabad... if u are really serious, just give me your contact number in hyderabad, i will take you to places you never visited in your life nor you watched on your so-called american tv network... by the way, when u r in hyderabad, the expenses are on me... thanks!

gosh Gandhi, you dont have to be so harsh about it, im already trying to organize the funds for the medications if there should be a need for them, i definately want to go and spend my time with the people there and bring some smiles to their faces, but why the need to be so pessimistic? someone has to take initiative to do something rather than always saying \"oh its no use\"

Ali has asked a simple question. If you can answer that do so. Why cast aspersions on his intents? It\'s unfortunate that these attitudes are one of the several causes which make Indians who are west-bound not even to look back. Please, please, please, be proactive and not reactive. I for one absolutely see no reason why you are so harsh???!!! And a very humble request. Not even once did Gandhi utter a word against any British in person. He limited himself to attacking their policies.

Gandhi has a point... actually several. He is trying to bring forth the disconnect between a TYPICAL American-broughtup and those that really want to serve the society. He is also correct in that \'charity begins at home.\' Do not pounce on him. He is looking at the worst case scenario where Ali may visit with his hired doctor, be scared and never return. Gandhi is bringiing some pragmatism to the board. See his viewpoints rather than jump on him. Ali, you have good ideas. Hope you can implement them. As to \'hiring\' a doctor, do you plan on getting him/her in India itself? And please do not be scared when the middle-class (and not only the \"poor\") people show-up at your clinic. Good Luck.

I totally understand what you are saying, and I think it is said that there exists this stereotype that American-Hyderabadis and Indians don\'t know what happens in India and have idealistic goals... If I were that idealistic I would not even be taking the initiative to start some sort of relief project. I know I can\'t change all of Hyderabad, but even making a difference in one person\'s life is a huge accomplishment in itself. I have come across so much opposition by people who say that this idea is a waste of time, but I am not going to lose hope. I\'ve been to Hyderabad, and I know there is poverty there, and I am prepared to meet the obstacles I will encounter. If someone is told the water is deep, that is no reason to not jump into the ocean and explore it. In fact, its depth is what gives the experience value. Call me selfish, but a part of this is so that I personally change, and develop into a better human being. My objective is not to do this once and forsake Hyderabad, but to come back again and again and devote my time to help in any way possible. I can understand the points that Gandhi and K make, but I will not be disheartened, because we need people who are strong and committed, willing to make a difference, not people who change their colors as the time goes by.

\'Naandi\' is a good place to begin. It is a social service organization, based in Banjara Hills, Hyderabad. Currently it is working on a project to improve the Government schools in Hyderabad and Secunderabad. For more details, check out http://www.naandi.org.
