The default linux installation has one bug. When we boot in single user mode, it never prompts for password. So if someone has physical access to your computer, he can login as root, change all the password, do whatever he likes. So we have to make it prompt for password even for single user mode, immediately after the installation.

**********Just a tip for you...*******

Try adding
restricted-password=\"mypassword\"
or
restricted password=\"mypassword\"
after the line label=\"linux\"
in /etc/lilo.conf and then run lilo.
i hope you are using lilo as your boot loader.

Hi Pradeep, I have been using Linux for 3 years now, not only in office but at home as my primary operating system. Linux has matured a lot these days to be used on the desktop. If any of you want Linux Cds, just let me know and I can get them for you.

Remember life does not stop with Red Hat!!!!!

Long live the geek.

There\'s one more way of doing this.

Require password to enter single user mode at boot by editing /etc/inittab. You must do this because no passwords are required to logon in single user mode.
After \"si::sysint...:\" enter the following line:

~~:S:wait:/sbin/sulogin

Abdul Khader, could you please be more explicit about your solution to the asked question (setting up a passwd for the single user mode)? This looks to me like we are running the same login script in the single user mode - I mean, the system is running the same login script when it\'s rebooted in the single user mode.
Can it be implemented (the solution) in the unix operating systems or does the solution differ in here? (\'cos I have the same problem in unix machines - that if someone has the physical access to the system, he can be the master to the server). Appreciate your answer... Thanks.

I think I was very clear. All you need to do is edit \" /etc/inittab \" and then after this \" si::sysinit:/etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit \" enter the following line: ~~:S:wait:/sbin/sulogin .
That\'s it. Now if some one has physical access to the system, don\'t worry. When he boots your system to single user mode, he will be surprised to see the system asking him for the root password.

I am posting a typical configuration example for your squid. If you have specific
problems, then please mention it. The squid configuration example. All you need to do is ,
search for \"http_access deny all \" change it to \"http_access allow all\"
The default port for squid is 3128.
If you have any problems then please mention the exact problem

I am sure that my solution works fine with linux. I have not tried it with solaris or any other unix.

Hi Friends, Nice to see you all participate in this discussion. Keep going..!! I have been using linux for the past 2 years. Regarding that single user mode, the 2 solutions given by our friends are appropriate. We can make the lilo boot loader to ask password when booting procedure changes from the default, by editing the lilo.conf. We can also make the single user mode prompt for a root password, by editing inittab. Is there any body working on an Network Intrusion Detection System on RedHat Linux 8.0? Now I am working on \\\\

Hi Abdul Khader, I am looking at some kind of intrusion detection system that detects all the port scans and reports or logs. Now I am running SNORT-0.9.1 Tools as an IDS. And snortsnarf as an log analysis tool. Is there anything better and easier? You can contact me at spradeep1979@yahoo.com.

Pradeep, I think snort is quit good but if you are very concerned about the port scans, then why not try portsentry. It\'s easy to configure and work with.
Have you ever tried LIDS. It\'s very good, according to my experience. You will have total control of the system , like even you can have restrictions on root user, you can hide processes, etc. It\'s port scan detection is also good. Check it, you will love it.
