It was Diwali all over again for Hyderabad, just minutes after Indian won over Pakistan! Well, actually it started when we had 8 runs to win! Me and my pals make it a point every year to take a detailed tour of the streets of Hyderabad just to count the number of Indian national flags hoisted on the eve of Independence Day and Republic Day. But tonight was a different scene, we noticed not only more flags then we had ever seen, but also people feeling like they belonged to the tricolor like never before. We took a 3-hour tour of Hyderabad till midnight and found guys driving bikes wearing the Indian team T-shirts and shirts that had the Indian flag.
It was a repeat of Diwali this night in Hyderabad, the only difference being that no one wished \"Happy Deepavali\". My pals infomed me that the junta grew senti and even cried when Sachin was trying to run with his injury – a true mark of a genius. Hyderabadis who kept drinking like fish were just conscious of one thing – the Indian batting and the huge total of 273 that needed to be gobbled up... all these with the timing of the Cadbury dairy milk ad brought so much spirit into the game. There were gangs shouting slogans, some decent and some not so decent. The popular one being \"ek baar, do baar, Pakistan Ki G*** maar\".
We had a carton full of leftover crackers of Diwali and all we did was distribute them to all those unknown faces caught in the celebration... It was a moment which we would cherish.
The crowed cheered by yelling \"Cmon\" as if it mattered to the Indians playing at Centurion - well, it mattered. The great duo of Dravid and Yuvraj was a treat to watch and the way Sachin damaged all the strategies that the Pakis had in place, including their backup strategies, was something we all would remember for years to come.
It was all here tonight at Hyderabad, excessive police bandobust, crowds shouting homemade slogans, broken beer bottles, police sirens, cracker display, fast bikers, people with flags painted on their faces, some wearing the flag, some wearing the flag as a hat... And not to mention the impromptu dance infront of Big Bazaar. All cricket frenzy Indians, trying to reinvent the Indian spirit... and yes, what a way to reinvent!!!Bravo!
By the way, how many heard the swearing of Afridi (which was audible) and the lip movements of Akram??
