Wish you all a happy "independence day"

by Akshay » Mon Aug 14, 2006 10:44 pm

What does independence day mean to you?

Why are we still part of the commonwealth if we are truly independent?

why dont the chinese celebrate an independence day?

how does our independence struggle parallel the independence struggle of america?

Are India and America celebrating independence day in the same sense?

Does celebrating regaining what was ours in the first place make any sense?

how far into future do we expect to celebrate this independence day?

do you foresee us celebrating this day 200/500/1000 years from now? what is the effect of this annual reminiscense on current/future generations?

Is the independence day a constant reminder of our victory over brits or a constant reminder of the previous subjugation to brits?

Does it make indians proud of the victory or ashamed of the subjugation?

Does the shame of past reflect in the psyche and growth of the nation?

Just some questions i ponder whenever i think of us celebrating our independence day.

We all celebrate this day with vigor and gaity...we remember the ones who gave their lives to the cause of our freedom from the brits.

seize back from the british what was naturally ours, a right to make our own decisions.

what is the significance of this day for you.

what does independence day mean in our nation's context? How long do we intend to celebrate this day, do you forsee us celebrating this day 1000 years from now? If not then why now?

Time to re=think about some aspects

by CTC » Tue Aug 15, 2006 11:00 am

It is also time to think about solutions to weed out Terrr, corruption, Goodaism and poverty. There should be capital punishment to terror , corruption and Goodaism. In democracy all people arer equal and all are equal before Law this should be implemented in spirit and sense. If this happens India not only celebrates Independence for next 1000 years but for also next 10,000 years. Remember India has given birth to Democracy long before Jesus Christ and never Invaded any other country in last 2000 yrs. It is birth place to major religions and cultures of the world. As long as Earth remains a planet of solar system India will be flag bearer for Democracy and freedom for people.

You have plenty of freedom here as anyone can be free including those who have indulged in Criminal activities. Law will never catch them even if does there are ways to go out scot free with out punishment.

What does independence day mean to you?

-->Freedom,i have right to decide my own destiny.

Why are we still part of the commonwealth if we are truly independent?

We fought against imperilism, we are always found of britishers(foreigners)

one must know, during freedom struggle, indians belived britishers rather than beliveing fellow indians. By the commonwealth is just forum with no powers.

why dont the chinese celebrate an independence day?

hmmm they celebrate the day of revoltion

how does our independence struggle parallel the independence struggle of america?

India is unique country and freedom struggle of india was far more severe, advanced in priciples like liberty, secularism, republic.

you need to understand what problems indian freedom fighters faced,

right from social dogma's , economic problems, cultural problems, religious problems( i would recommend to read india's struggle for independence

by Bipin chandra and India from midnight to millenim by shashi tharoor)

Are India and America celebrating independence day in the same sense?

Does celebrating regaining what was ours in the first place make any sense?

It's more than celebration, it is the way where we remind to our souls and freedom fighters that we havent forgotton you, and we respect your sacriface.

how far into future do we expect to celebrate this independence day?

Till the end of time.

do you foresee us celebrating this day 200/500/1000 years from now? what is the effect of this annual reminiscense on current/future generations?

Yes.

Is the independence day a constant reminder of our victory over brits or a constant reminder of the previous subjugation to brits?

It is day, where we united against all odds against an outsider, uniting 35 crores of people at the time of independence is no easy task.

Does it make indians proud of the victory or ashamed of the subjugation?

I cant imagine how could we trust britishes and allowed to rule our country.

it feels shame but not any more, brits are scaried of us, its our time .

Does the shame of past reflect in the psyche and growth of the nation?

It should always make us stronger, more focussed more driven.

There is nothing like being YOUNG and INDIAN.

Interesting- could you be more specific?

What angers you the most: Invasion of North America by the Europeans and elimination of the native American culture, invasion of various countries (including the Indian subcontinent) by plundering Arab invaders, displacement of the original Kashmiri population by bloodthirsty militants, or just the case of Plaestine?

We are all guilty of various prejudices, so come down from your 'holier than thou attitude'.

On Independence Day I am proud to be a part of one of the few cultures of the world that truly lives upto the spirit of secularism and non-aggression. I would like to see any other country boast of more religious sites that are revered by different communities, any other country that recognizes religious holidays for other religions except that of the majority population, any other country that would welcome with open arms a 'saint' from another religion (Mother Teresa) and we still look upto her with untainted admiration. Inspite of 'America' being heralded as the World's most powerful democracy it has not been able to elect a black, a woman or a Jew to its highest political position. We've had a woman leading us, a Muslim (APJ Kalam) who easily deserves the highest position and a Sikh who now is the current PM!

The problem is 'you never miss a really good thing until it's gone'. Inspite of our differences, our setbacks, there has always been a subtle cultural thread that goes through the Indian subcontinent that was being stressed by the British to the nth degree. We knew what we were losing, our culture. The Brits just could not assimilate into this wonderful fabric and wanted to rip it apart. They were partly successful (Pakistan and Bangladesh). Let's hope we never come that close to disintegartion again.
