Volunteers mtg. agenda

by Shyam » Wed Jul 26, 2006 10:54 pm

Thanks Indy :)

Our primary interest is to help build a better India. And the best place to start is our city.

The issues you highlighted are good ones to start with.

For me .. 'Education' (on a broader sense) is an area of higher interest.

This need not be limited to basic education to poor kids etc.. etc...

Educating people about their rights and responsibilities is one area I want to work on.

I am a strong advocate for 'Right to Information'.

'Quality of Education' another ...

Btw, are you involved with aidindia ?

One of my friends in Chennai had approached me long back for some website work for aidindia. We had some exchanges.. I haven't been in touch with her for a long time now..

Hi Shyam

I am not a member of aidindia yet, I have been trying to get in touch with the Hyderabad Chapter, but we've been playing phone tag. I saw AIDindia is already doing some great work and therefore put their link in my signature line.

I like your are of interest, there is lot we can do there.

My main hope is to slowly establish (wth people like all of you) a seamless network of individuals who can mobilize efficiently in crises situations as well as contribute through volunteer activities to generally improve quality of life of all citizens. It is necessary for various volunteer organizations to know about each other and exchange resources as needed and avoid redundancy in efforts.

Hopefully I will know by today/tomorrow what sort of meeting facility may be available for us. In the mean time keep talking to friends and family and encourage them to join in too.

Thanks Akshay and Indiabo for the encouragement for all of us!

Also, you can help by talking to your friends and family to at least give volunteering a try!

People on these boards who are still unsure or can not participate can also help by forwarding this message thread to their close ones. :)

Saturday meeting

by Indy » Mon Jul 31, 2006 10:27 am

For those of you who are wondering if you should feel guilty about not showing up on Saturday, the answer is YES!

Just Kidding!

Yes, the attendance from fullhyd people (except moi) was 0%. Which according to my skewed, optimistic logic means that nextweek attendance should be 100%!! RIGHT?

I did have a very fruitful discussion with the CSIM people and we were brainstorming on ideas to make volunteering more popular and part of everyday life, not a chore, but a joyful 'hobbie'.

What are your ideas?

Can you take some time to note down three key things you think keep people from jumping into volunteer activities?

Thanks, see you at CSIM this coming Saturday 2-4 pm :D

Volunteering

by Shoonya » Tue Aug 01, 2006 10:44 am

That sounds like exactly what I was to do. But I should also suggest we look at the local help groups which already have an infrastructure in place which we can go join in and help. So the meeting is going to be on Aug 5th?

Hi Shoonya,

Welcome to this thread! Yes, we will be looking at helping organizations that already have projects in place as well as identifying some projects on our own. Obviously there's a lot of basic work that needs to be done to make a concrete platform from which we can operate. Need more people like you to step forward.

Yes the meeting on Aug 5th still stands- see previous posts for details or send me a pm if you have additional questions.

Thanks

Meeting on Aug 5th

by Indy » Tue Aug 08, 2006 10:10 am

Well Hello again everybody:

In case you were wondering, the meeting on Aug 5th, again registered poor attendance. Dr. Srinivas did turn up, but, unfortunately I had left a little early that day (finally disheartened). I'm thinking maybe it was the rains, and not waning of interest- (to keep my spirits up  ).

So my question is :

what am I missing here? How can I get you guys to at least show up? Don't worry, I don't give up that easily! Right now I'm just taking solace in the fact that this thread has the highest no. of views compared to most other topics!

What am I doing?

Recently my husband and I visited a small community in Musheerabad with an extremely noble and patriotic young man named Irfan. His commitment to social work and his smile has convinced me we can not give up. The small community lives in absolute squalor with terrible housing conditions, no waste collection or other public services that the MCH is supposed to provide, yet beautiful people who don't know that they have a right to demand a better standard of life. My husband and I hope to start a community store there that would provide low cost lifestyle items to the people there. The store will purely run on individual and corporate donations of clothes, furnitures, accessories, small appliances etc, which can be bought at very nominal prices. The goal is to provide an opportunity for people to buy things that they would otherwise be unable to afford, and for those people who have too much pride to ask for 'freebies' from people. Wish us all the best in this project! I hope to be in touch with the people there again so that the awareness of health care related to environmental conditions can be raised.

Finally, a meeting!

by Indy » Sat Aug 12, 2006 5:31 pm

Well, although a little unplanned, Shyam and I were able to meet up and exchange a few ideas. Mr. Srivastava of CSIM also joined our discussion and we ended up with a few action items:

1. Shyam will try and set up a Google/yahoo usergroup to facilitate online meetings, since it may not be convenient for everybody to 'physically' attend meetings. Shyam will post details in this thread this week.

2. Mr. Srivastava will help us set up some contacts with schools and colleges in our area to have discussions on volunteering in India and try and get more people involved.

We'll keep watching this board, to see if we get additional inputs and ideas from all of you! Meanwhile wish you all a safe and Happy Independence Day Holiday this coming week.
