We hope to:

1.To form volunteer networks to rapidly mobilize resources during floods, quakes, famines or disease outbreaks r other natural disasters.

2. To raise the standard of public health and education facilities by volunteering time to do on-site visits of schools and hospitals and maintain a searchable database for poor facilities, list of problems and to work with govt. to develop and implement minimum standards for these facilities through both govt and charitable funds.

3. To work with local authorities to improve road and traffic conditions (we'll have to be gently persuasive to get cooperation from authorities- e.g. volunteer during school hours to help children cross the streets and help identify autos etc. violating the 4-passenger policy, volunteer to help police out at busy junctions etc)

For this we need volunteers from the community of doctors, nurses, academicians, engineers, scientists lawyers, various civil service departments, law enforcement agencies and many others. Our goal is to reach a critical mass of at least 100 people . Following this an informal meeting will organized to kick off the campaign. Thank you.

Anybody interested can send me the following info through pm.

What are your interests:

1. Education

2. Healthcare

3. Sanitation and hygiene

4. Roads and constructions

What type of hours might you be available

2-4 hours per week

4-8 hours per week

Anytime as needed

Weekends only

Also you can help if:

If you have (office-type) space available for very nominal / free lease rate

Have contacts with local businesses and news establishments for ads and to sponsor minor incentives for volunteers or provide some fraction of operational cost.

Just by letting people know- i.e. word of mouth.

Yes.. One more hand

by Subha » Fri Jul 21, 2006 10:47 am

Hi,

I would be interested to volunteer.

I am myself trying to mobilize a group to control bad traffic situations.

It is horrifying to drive in Hyderabad nowadays.

We were planning to have candid cameras at major junctions to capture how people jump lights, drive on wrong side, overtake without proper space,etc...

All this right in front of the traffic police.

It is pathetic that we don't slow down near schools and don't give way for ambulances. We don't help old age pedestrians cross by stopping for a couple of seconds sometimes.

But there may be legal issues in capturing these.May need to go through press. Any ideas?

We were also planning to make a list of driving rules, common mistakes

and if possible a video on these and take classes at institutions and schools.

Hyderabadis.. please wake up.

Welcome!

by Indy » Fri Jul 21, 2006 12:01 pm

Subha

It is indeed wonderful to see you on this thread!

I will be pulling all of those who have responded so far together towards the end of July. This weekend some proposed dates and time will be posted to see how everyone can attend.

Yes, we do need a champion for traffic safety/ etiquette in Hyd! I think Hyd is touted as having the highest number of NRIs relocating to it than any other Indian city- there is no reason why every aspect of life in Hyderabad should not be brought upto international standards!

Please feel free to invite any friends/family members who may also be interested.

Thank you.

Volunteers' first meeting

by Indy » Tue Jul 25, 2006 9:10 am

Dear All

Again thanks for your interest in volunteering. Following are some days/times that I would like to suggest, based on which a venue will be fixed.

1. Weekdays late evening (6 pm-8pm)

2. Weekend late afternoon (2-4pm)

3. Weekdays lunch time (1-3 pm)

Please mention specifically if something does not work for you at all. If any of the above are fine- please mention that also.

The first meeting would be

1. Intros

2. Interests

3. One or two focus areas to start

4. Planning ideas

5. Canvassing for more volunteers

Please bring your own ideas to the table, or send them in advance to indien_bandy@yahoo.com

Sincerely

Indy

Thanks Akshay, from all of us! I know there are people out there, like me, who are frustrated, at how India is being run. We should all do the little that is within our hands to change what we can for the better!

My postings on this site will be regular, so that the topic does not get 'buried'. Hopefully in Aug/Sept we can boast an actual start for a project or two.

Idea

by Subha » Wed Jul 26, 2006 9:00 am

Weekends are fine for me.

But before we meet, I would like us all to share what we want to improve and possibly how. Maybe u can start a new thread and keep track of ideas and authors.

Indy, please take the lead.

We shud be in the same frame of thoughts when we meet.

Otherwise, If I am thinking of something and you of something else, we end up confused and spend a lot of time. That's what happens in meetings.

Frame the agenda and we'll fix dates and venue.

Volunteers mtg. agenda

by Indy » Wed Jul 26, 2006 9:20 am

First of all, welcome aboard Shyam!

From the few responses I have so far, weekends look the most appealing for people.

In my previous post I had mentioned 5 items we would/might want to discuss.

Now I would like all of you to pick your area of highest interest (education, health, hygiene and sanitation, roads and traffic, environmental etc.) and suggest:

1. possible small projects

2. what would be an acceptable goal to achieve

3. what kind of resources and local administration support we may need.

Subha, I haven't started a separate thread right now, if the agenda and meeting discussions become long posts, we can do that.

In the mean time, please post here, your thoughts or send me an e-mail (indien_bandy@yahoo.com). I will compile everything before the meeting.

Thanks everybody.
