So Beware of Unknown / Strange Words ... Know Meaning and USE!

:o

Just to stress HH sir's message:

exonerate: To free from blame. To free from a responsibility, obligation, or task.

I have an interesting association with this word. When I was in college I thought it would be cool to express my attitude through words on my action sneakers- remember that brand??

I thought exonerate indicated an unfettered attitude, an attitude of breaking from bondage, freeing oneself in a comprehensive sense. So thought it was cool and expressed my attitude. So I used to parade around the college with EXONERATE calligraphed on my sneakers. No one really commented; it is likely they decided I was demented.

It was not untill an year later upon revisiting this word did I realise that the word has a legal association and not a rebellious association. Ofcourse, I felt like an ass for a long time after that. Very soon after that I stopped the whole nonsense of calligraphed shoes.

so someone has ultimately googled my display name... ....thought of starting a thread on that ...

Just realised this word still has to enter mainstream.

another word for exonerate

Good synonym. I imagine contexts where one can use exculpate to be a a proper subset of the contexts where one can use exonerate. But both require the action to be taken by an external entity.

ex(release)-oner(burden)-ate(verb): release someone from a burdensome sutuation.

ex(release)-culp(guilt/wrong)-ate(verb): release someone from an incriminatory situation.

Makes sense for the court to either exonerate or exculpate a suspect.

Makes sense to exonerate someone from an obligation.

Doesnt make sense to exculpate someone from an obligation.

Things are supposed to happen the way they happen. And the reason they happen the way the happen is because you try to make them happen in a certain way and may or may not be succesful.

"source=dictionary.com"
synecdoche
A figure of speech in which a part is used for the whole (as hand for sailor), the whole for a part (as the law for
police officer), the specific for the general
(as cutthroat for assassin), the general for the specific (as thief for pickpocket), or the material for the thing
made from it (as steel for sword).

I heard this word for the first time yesterday in the second movie of the apu trilogy by satyajit ray. And, today it was the context of wordsmith words.

what a coincidence; coming across a very uncommon word for first time and that too twice within 12 hours.

I haven't checked on the latest but if my memory serves me right the longest word in the English dictionary is

Flocinaucinehilepilefication which means 'to estimate as worthless'.

Btw, good thread Nyx. Some of the words are too abstract to be used every other day but it doesn't hurt to know their meaning.
Whether you think you can, or you think you can't, you are right.
