hi all,

was just going through Fun Kay's "Smell of fresh rain" and came across the word petrichor... pardon me if there's already a thread for this topic but i wud like all of us to collect some more words which are eponyms or toponyms or simply a proper name/word to describe a particular thing, which we thought never really existed.

to begin with .. i put in my contribution

philtrum--the vertical depression in the center of the upper lip...i came across this word when i was in my 8th standard or so . .watching Bournvita Quiz Contest by Derek O'Brien...

borborygmi--rumbling sounds made by the stomach when one's hungry (not necessarily though)

zeph.yr \'zef-*r\ n: a breeze from the west.

I didnt realize zephyr, though a more common word than petrichor, requires the breeze to be from the west.

Quote from Anu Garg, founder of wordsmith.org: "Words are like an artist having a palette of colors: You don't use all the words in a single painting, but having a vast vocabulary is like being an artist who has the right colors to bring out just the right ideas, as they have pictured it in their mind."

But you run into the possibility of speaking to someone who does not know of the words you are speaking.. and pfft you feel like a fool..

Even here in Australia there are lots of people in high positions who do not know the basic of words.. we have to speak their language.. :(

I agree. The word should fit the sentence and audience.
