It’s 9/11 against Muslims: OIC

Jeddah, Feb. 14: In what can be described as the first confidence-building measure between Europe and the Muslim world, one of the highest ranking leaders of the European Union paid a visit to the secretary-general of the 57-member Organisation of the Islamic Conference (OIC) in Jeddah on Monday.

Top on the agenda of the meeting between EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana and Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu was a discussion on the ways and means of turning the tide in the raging furore over the blasphemous cartoons depicting Prophet Mohammed that were first published in a leading Danish paper in September. Mr Solana agreed with Mr Ihsanoglu’s suggestion that the EU and the OIC should jointly make efforts to adopt a UN resolution on the lines of the existing Resolution No. 60/150, which calls for combating defamation of religions. “The new UN resolution should prohibit defamation of all prophets and faiths,” said Mr Ihsanoglu.

Mr Ihsanoglu asked for international legal measures against blasphemy. He said the EU should adopt necessary legislative measures by the European Parliament against Islamophobia. “People in the Muslim world feel that this is a new 9/11 against themselves. In Europe, Muslims have taken the place of Jews during World War II. There is a need for a UN legislation and clarification of existing conventions,” he said.

Mr Solana agreed with much of what Mr Ihsanoglu said. “We have decided to work together to overcome the consequences of the present crisis,” said Mr Solana. “We feel a profound respect for the Muslim people. We never wanted to offend their feelings. This was not our intention, this has never been our intention nor will it be in the future.” Mr Ihsanoglu said it was wrong to blame the OIC for what one reporter suggested was the organisation’s hard line that has riled sentiments in the Muslim world.

“We wrote to the Prime Minister of Denmark. We wrote to UN representatives, EU representatives etc. etc. The OIC had a very mild, conciliatory statement in the Mecca Declaration, but the European response was one of indifference. We haven’t heard anybody saying anything until the streets took over,” Mr Ihsanoglu said.

He said the street took over because of the republication of the offensive cartoons in Norway’s Magazinet on January 10. “We have always been trying to calm down reactions,” he said. “We deplored all acts of violence. But at the same time we have to defend the rights of Muslims.

We are not challenging anybody’s values of human rights; if these rights are misused we cannot stop people to do what they have done. I don’t think we can ask people not to express their feelings. Nobody has the power to stop public expression. But we made it clear right from the beginning that it (the protest) should be in a democratic way. It should be in a peaceful way. No violence, no attacks on others because this is against the ethics of the Prophet himself.”

When Mr Solana was asked whether he would ask the Prime Minister of Denmark to issue a clear-cut apology, he was vague: “I think the government of Denmark has said what it had to say.”

To a question on why Europe reacted only after extremist Muslims burned down Danish embassies and Danish flags, he said that perception was not true. “We talked way before the controversy burst onto the street. We started reacting way before that,” he repeated. Mr Solana was in Saudi Arabia on the first stop in a five-country West Asia trip mainly aimed at repairing ties strained by the row over the blasphemous caricatures.

Image of Goddess Durga used to promote whisky

Tuesday, 14 February , 2006, 14:22

London: Hindu community leaders in Europe are up in arms against display of goddess Durga's poster promoting a whisky brand and use of Lord Ram's image on a tissue paper.

It is time for Hindus around the world and the Indian government to stand up and be counted, Bimal Krishna Das, General Secretary of the National Council of Hindu Temples, representing 90 per cent of the UK's 140 Hindu temples and by extension at least 75 per cent of Britains 6 lakh Hindus, said.

He said a disco bar in Greece has invited the wrath of Hindus for displaying a poster of goddess Durga promoting a whisky brand.

Large posters inside and outside the Balon Oriental Disco Bar in Athens depict the Goddess carrying bottles of Southern Comfort Whisky.

"The Indian community in Athens has been trying for the last three months to have the posters removed but in vain," said Paramjit Singh, originally from Jalandhar, now settled in Greece.

Letters have been sent to the American manufacturer of the Whisky to withdraw the poster, he said.

Also, despite protests, the tissues bearing Lord Ram's image still remain in circulation for over a year because their German manufacturer has refused to cease production, Das said.

Pakistani Cleric Issues Fatwa Over Cartoons

Friday, February 17, 2006

PESHAWAR, Pakistan — A Pakistani cleric announced a $1 million bounty for killing a cartoonist who drew the Prophet Muhammad caricatures, as thousands rallied across the country Friday and authorities arrested scores of protesters.

Mohammed Yousaf Qureshi, prayer leader at the historic Mohabat Khan mosque in the northwestern city of Peshawar, announced the mosque and the Jamia Ashrafia religious school he leads would give a $25,000 reward and a car for killing the cartoonist who drew the prophet caricatures — considered blasphemous by Muslims.

He also said a local jewelers' association would give $1 million but no representative of the association was available to confirm it had made the offer.

"This is a unanimous decision of by all imams (prayer leaders) of Islam that whoever insults the prophet deserves to be killed and whoever will take this insulting man to his end, will get this prize," Qureshi told about 1,000 people outside the mosque after Friday prayers.

Qureshi did not name any cartoonist in his announcement and did not appear to be aware that 12 different people had drawn the pictures. The crowd outside the mosque burned a Danish flag and an effigy of the Danish prime minister.

"Give enough power to the Muslim countries and enable them to take revenge," said Qari Saeed Ullah, a prayer leader in Islamabad.

Thousands of demonstrators defied a ban on rallies in Punjab, one of Pakistan's four provinces. Thousands of security forces were deployed across the country to prevent unrest.

In India, police used batons and tear gas to disperse several thousand angry Muslims who rioted over the drawings, police said. The protesters burned Danish flags, pelted police with stones, and looted and burnt shops after Friday prayers in Hyderabad, a city of 7 million people.

Was afraid that this will happen in dear Hyderabd too, and alas, it happened.

ANOTHER EXAMPLE OF HYPOCRICIY - ONE RULE FOR MUSLIMS AND ANOTHER FOR THE REST

Hyderabad, Feb. 18: Peace returned to the old city on Saturday and traders largely ignored a bandh call given by the BJP and the VHP. Police shooed away some activists who were forcing traders to close their shops. In the Assembly, Speaker K.R. Suresh Reddy suspended BJP legislators G. Kishen Reddy and Dorababu for the day for disrupting proceedings.

They were demanding a debate in the Assembly and a judicial probe into Friday’s violence. Police commissioner A.K. Mohanty, referring to reports criticising the force for failing to stop the rioters, said, “The police department is everyone’s sister-in-law. Society is the mother-in-law. Everyone blames the police.” He said, “There was no failure as such. We could control the violence within half-an-hour though we had not anticipated the trouble.”

“We don’t want to name who was behind the riots but action will be taken against them,” Mr Mohanty said. The police would go strictly on evidence it could gather on the rioters, he said. Police ramped up its presence in the affected areas in the old city. “We have four RAF battalions in our areas,” assistant commissioner of police, Charminar, Shaik Sharfuddin said on Saturday. This is apart from the increased presence of regular police.

Mr Sharfuddin said police are collecting evidence such as banners and weapons used by the rioters. He said no fresh arrests had been made, apart from the three persons arrested on Friday. “We are investigating the case, they have not been transferred to the special investigation team of the Central Crime Station,” he said to a question.

In the Assembly, Speaker K.R. Suresh Reddy suspended both the BJP legislators when they disrupted the proceedings insisting on a debate on Friday’s violence. The two legislators had given an adjournment motion for the debate and were demanding a judicial probe into the violence. The Speaker turned down the motion and Mr Kishan Reddy and Mr Dorababu insisted that Speaker take up the debate in view of its seriousness.

Meanwhile, the House was adjourned briefly when the TD members stalled the proceedings insisting on a debate on misuse of official machinery for the Visakhapatnam byelections. After the House reassembled, the BJP members continued to press for the debate and waved placards demanding a judicial probe. The two MLAs rushed to the podium following which legislative affairs minister K. Rosaiah moved the resolution seeking suspension of the members.

Though marshals were summoned, the BJP members walked away by themselves. Later, Mr Kishan Reddy took exception to the suspension and said it reflected the “autocratic functioning of the government.” He found fault with other political parties for remaining silent on the “pre-planned violence raked up by the Majlis.” The Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen has already denied any role in the violence.

The jihad must go on you see... the prophet has been insulted, revenge need be taken, heads should roll and blood should spill.

How dare they defile something we consider sacred? Them danes must be taught a lesson.... so lets burn down some shops in hyderabad :)

We are the faithful. God is great.

On a side note, my friend just called me from India and told me that a cow has been slaughtered in India by some muslims for a feast. Now, being a Hindu (which by default means a muslim-hating-fundamentalist) I consider the cow sacred.... so I am offended. I am on my way to the nearest pakistani store to confront the store owner and demand an apology from him because he is also a muslim and he apologizes I will burn his store down. A faithful gotta do what a faithful gotta do.

ps: samai's post at 4.41, this one at 5.10... I am samai
May the Fries be with you!
