HYDERABAD: The Appajosyula-Vishnubhotla-Kandalam Foundation will honour Biruduraju Rama Raju with its `Pratibha Murthy Life Time Achievement Award-2006' at a four-day event to be held at Nizamabad from January 5 to 8. ISTANBUL (Reuters) - A Turkish villager who ran away with his friend's wife has offered his own wife in exchange, newspapers said on Thursday.

Farm laborer Cengiz Esme said Gulhan, his wife of 18 years, disappeared a month ago after leaving their village to go shopping in the southern Turkish town of Tarsus.

The 36-year-old said his village friend Mehmet Yaksi had telephoned him the next day and said: "I've run off with your wife .... You take my wife," the Radikal daily reported.

Esme pleaded for Gulhan to return and said he was ready to forgive her and make a fresh start elsewhere. The reports said Yaksi's wife, a mother of three, declined to comment on the situation.

Sachin Scores 35th Test Hundred

New Delhi, December 10, 2005

After a year's wait, Sachin Tendulkar finally stepped away from shared glory to emerge as a sole leading century-maker in the history of Test cricket.

The Sri Lankans gave him a few anxious moments and the weight of the achievement seemed to be weighing on Tendulkar's shoulders as he tread through the 90s.

The crowd rose in applause as the batsman turned the ball down to square-leg for a single to complete his 35th Test hundred and surpass Sunil Gavaskar's record for the most number of Test centuries during the first innings of the second Test against Sri Lanka at the Feroze Shah Kotla ground in New Delhi on Saturday.

Tendulkar was 100 not out from 177 balls at the end of the first day of the Test.

Interestingly, it was the same venue where Gavaskar scored his 29th century to equal Sir Donald Bradman's record for most hundreds.

Tendulkar scored the record-breaking 35th hundred in his 124th Test. Before the match, he had scored 10134 in 198 Test innings at the average of 57.25.

The 32-year-old levelled with Gavaskar with a masterly 248 not out against Bangladesh in the first Test of the two match series, at the Bangabandhu stadium in Dhaka last December.

Bow For The Best Bow-Wow

HYDERABAD: - Monday, Dec 12, 2005 - The All-Breeds' Championship show saw an army of dogs, proud dog owners and a circus of breeds. This show, which came close on the heels of the Hycan show, had an equally remarkable range of dogs.

Methodist High School in Abids where the show was held on Sunday saw dogs barking good-naturedly, slopping down heavily on their legs, dogs trying to nip at one another's tails, growling suspiciously at passers-by.
...

There were 35 breeds in all; these included the Great Danes, the funny mouth Boxers, the hairy-eared Saluki, the yappy Pomeranians, the long-bodied Daschunds, the alert German Shepherds, the short-tailed Dobermans, the spotted Dalmatians and the rare Siberian Husky.

Dogs, which were judged to be in good condition, received challenge certificates. There were awards for the best of breed, the best of opposite sex. Of the dogs that stood first in their respective breeds, the best in show was selected.

Show-Stealer

While a German Shepherd won the best dog in show and the best dog in show bred in India, a Labrador Retriever won the second best dog in show and yet another German Shepherd won the third best dog in show award.

Asked whether dogs were intrinsically good-natured or bad-tempered, dog owners said that it is the upbringing that counts. "Dogs do have varying temperaments, but in the end, your dog will be what you bring it up to be," says Rebecca who owns a Miniature Poodle. Jeet who owns Neapolitan Mastiff says these dogs need more care because they grow up to be huge and occupy a lot of space.

Make Sunday Fun Day

Designate Sundays for spending time with family and friends. Plan active outings such as a trip to the zoo, a hiking adventure or playtime in the park.

Even if you've got a busy family, something as simple as a family meal, with everyone contributing, can make for a great activity.

Let one family member choose what the menu will be. Rotate weekly.

The family meal doesn't always have to be dinner. A Sunday breakfast, lunch or brunch can be a great time to plan the day's activity.

Press Sense - 3 / 1 / 06 : "Hey! How'd You Find Me?"

BERLIN (Reuters) - German police Thursday captured two men suspected of stealing from 15 cars and two garden sheds by following their footprints in the snow for several miles.

Policemen were checking up on a car whose alarm had been set off just after midnight in the town of Hoentrop when they found a smashed window and two sets of footprints which they followed more than ten streets.

"At one point the tracks disappeared because someone had cleared the pavement outside their home in the middle of the night," police said in a statement.

After this minor setback, the officers picked up the trail again. The two sets of footprints led them directly to the entrance of a flat where the burglars not only stored their booty but also left their shoes and gloves to dry.

"Hey What's / Who's Cooking ?!?" - Sad, On So Many Levels... Mon Jan 9, 2006
LONDON (Reuters) - Almost a third of young Britons have passed off a ready-made meal as their own creation in order to impress someone, according to a survey by the Department of Health.

Women were the worst offenders, with 40 percent saying they had claimed food bought in a shop as their own, compared to 22 percent of men.

And seven percent of the 1,000 16-24-year-olds questioned said they regularly claimed credit for food they had bought.

The research, conducted as part of the department's 5 A DAY campaign to encourage people to eat more fruit and vegetables, also found that one in 10 had never cooked a proper meal for themselves because they "don't know how."

It also discovered that women were more impressed by a man's cooking ability than whether they owned a flashy car.

Press Sense - 14 / 1 / 06 : Women In Quake-Hit Pakistan Break Old Barriers

Women In Quake-Hit Pakistan Break Old Barriers - Fri Jan 13, 2006

MUZAFFARABAD, Pakistan (Reuters) - The massive quake flattened Shazia Noreen's house and killed her daughter. Her life shattered, Noreen defied convention in Pakistan's male-dominated, Muslim society and went out to find work.

Scraping together meager savings, she built a small corrugated-iron shop next to the tent where her family now lives.

"It is our family tradition to keep women in the house, but I'm going to change that tradition," Noreen said with a grin.

Noreen is one of countless women in northern Pakistan whose lives were turned upside down by the October 8 earthquake that killed more than 73,000 people and left 3 million homeless.

With many men out of work -- Noreen's husband lost his motorcycle taxi in the disaster -- and their families destitute, some women have broken with tradition and found a job. And their menfolk, however reluctantly, have gone along with it.

Noreen said that, with no money coming in, her husband had agreed to let her open her shop.

The flood of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) that have come to help with quake relief has given women an unprecedented opportunity to get out of their homes.

"Most women can't even buy an aspirin on their own," said women's rights activist Taqdees Gillani. "They have to consult their brothers, father or husband first, but NGOs have provided them a chance to come out."

Rights workers say there has been a big change in attitudes toward women and work.

"It is a sudden and vast change," said Raja Nawaz, project coordinator with the International Human Rights Observer organization.

"Before this disaster, it was very difficult to get females to work in the private sector or in the NGO sector. It's astonishing that women have started working outside their homes." ...

New Garbage Collection System From March - Saturday, Jan 28, 2006
Solid waste management to be made mandatory

Thiruvananthapuram: Solid waste management will be made mandatory for hospitals, apartment buildings, wedding halls and slaughterhouses in the city, Mayor C. Jayan Babu said here on Friday.

Addressing a meeting of the Corporation Council, he said licences for such institutions would be issued only if they are equipped with adequate facilities to handle their garage output.

The council approved a pilot project to streamline the garbage collection system in 25 wards. The new mechanism covering 50,000 households will be implemented from March.

The Rs.7.02-crore project primarily involves the segregation of waste at source. The corporation will provide all houses in the 25 wards with plastic garbage containers of two different colours, one for the biodegradable waste material and the other for the nondegradable refuse. Hospitals, markets and slaughterhouses will be provided with larger containers that can be mechanically removed. ...

Bollywood songs educate millions, literally

While watching a Spanish film as a student, Indian Brij Kothari wished that instead of sub-titles in English they were in Spanish, so he could learn the language.

Ten years on, Kothari has not only become fluent in Spanish but is also helping hundreds of thousands of people in India learn their mother tongue by watching popular film songs with subtitles in the same language.

Thanks HH for starting such an interesting thread.

Readers' Editor *****, The Hindu - Terms of Reference - Saturday, Jan 14, 2006

Freedom of the press is important. So is its social responsibility, which must begin with interaction with and accountability to readers. For a daily newspaper, this must happen on a daily basis. The Hindu has announced its appointment of the first Readers' Editor in its 127 year old history. These terms of reference for the independent, full-time ombudsman of the newspaper should be of interest to our 3.75 million-plus readers, and to all streams of the Indian news media.

- N. Ram

"The Hindu believes it is the first newspaper in the history of Indian journalism to appoint a Readers' Editor. The Readers' Editor will be the independent, full-time internal ombudsman of The Hindu ." ...

"The Hindu wishes to acknowledge that it has been inspired to do this by the exemplary practice and experience of The Guardian, U.K., over the past decade in a crucial area of newspaper performance." ...

To: Professor@University.edu Subject: Why It's All About Me
By JONATHAN D. GLATER

Published: February 21, 2006

One student skipped class and then sent the professor an e-mail message asking for copies of her teaching notes. Another did not like her grade, and wrote a petulant message to the professor. Another explained that she was late for a Monday class because she was recovering from drinking too much at a wild weekend party.

Jennifer Schultens, an associate professor of mathematics at the University of California, Davis, received this e-mail message last September from a student in her calculus course: "Should I buy a binder or a subject notebook? Since I'm a freshman, I'm not sure how to shop for school supplies. Would you let me know your recommendations? Thank you!"

At colleges and universities nationwide, e-mail has made professors much more approachable. But many say it has made them too accessible, erasing boundaries that traditionally kept students at a healthy distance.

These days, they say, students seem to view them as available around the clock, sending a steady stream of e-mail messages — from 10 a week to 10 after every class — that are too informal or downright inappropriate.

"The tone that they would take in e-mail was pretty astounding," said Michael J. Kessler, an assistant dean and a lecturer in theology at Georgetown University. " 'I need to know this and you need to tell me right now,' with a familiarity that can sometimes border on imperative."

He added: "It's a real fine balance to accommodate what they need and at the same time maintain a level of legitimacy as an instructor and someone who is institutionally authorized to make demands on them, and not the other way round."

While once professors may have expected deference, their expertise seems to have become just another service that students, as consumers, are buying. So students may have no fear of giving offense, imposing on the professor's time or even of asking a question that may reflect badly on their own judgment.

For junior faculty members, the barrage of e-mail has brought new tension into their work lives, some say, as they struggle with how to respond. Their tenure prospects, they realize, may rest in part on student evaluations of their accessibility.

The stakes are different for professors today than they were even a decade ago, said Patricia Ewick, chairwoman of the sociology department at Clark University in Massachusetts, explaining that "students are constantly asked to fill out evaluations of individual faculty." Students also frequently post their own evaluations on Web sites like ratemyprofessor.com and describe their impressions of their professors on blogs.

Last fall, undergraduate students at Syracuse University set up a group in Facebook.com, an online network for students, and dedicated it to maligning one particular instructor. The students were reprimanded.

Professor Ewick said 10 students in one class e-mailed her drafts of their papers days before they were due, seeking comments. "It's all different levels of presumption," she said. "One is that I'll be able to drop everything and read 250 pages two days before I'm going to get 50 of these."

Kathleen E. Jenkins, a sociology professor at the College of William and Mary in Virginia, said she had even received e-mail requests from students who missed class and wanted copies of her teaching notes.

Alexandra Lahav, an associate professor of law at the University of Connecticut, said she felt pressured by the e-mail messages. "I feel sort of responsible, as if I ought to be on call all the time," she said.

Many professors said they were often uncertain how to react. Professor Schultens, who was asked about buying the notebook, said she debated whether to tell the student that this was not a query that should be directed to her, but worried that "such a message could be pretty scary."

"I decided not to respond at all," she said.

Christopher J. Dede, a professor at the Harvard Graduate School of Education who has studied technology in education, said these e-mail messages showed how students no longer deferred to their professors, perhaps because they realized that professors' expertise could rapidly become outdated.

"The deference was probably driven more by the notion that professors were infallible sources of deep knowledge," Professor Dede said, and that notion has weakened.

Meanwhile, students seem unaware that what they write in e-mail could adversely affect them, Professor Lahav said. She recalled an e-mail message from a student saying that he planned to miss class so he could play with his son. Professor Lahav did not respond.

"It's graduate school, he's an adult human being, he's obviously a parent, and it's not my place to tell him how to run his life," she said.

But such e-mail messages can have consequences, she added. "Students don't understand that what they say in e-mail can make them seem very unprofessional, and could result in a bad recommendation."

Still, every professor interviewed emphasized that instant feedback could be invaluable. A question about a lecture or discussion "is for me an indication of a blind spot, that the student didn't get it," said Austin D. Sarat, a professor of political science at Amherst College.

College students say that e-mail makes it easier to ask questions and helps them to learn. "If the only way I could communicate with my professors was by going to their office or calling them, there would be some sort of ranking or prioritization taking place," said Cory Merrill, 19, a sophomore at Amherst. "Is this question worth going over to the office?"

But student e-mail can go too far, said Robert B. Ahdieh, an associate professor at Emory Law School in Atlanta. He paraphrased some of the comments he had received: "I think you're covering the material too fast, or I don't think we're using the reading as much as we could in class, or I think it would be helpful if you would summarize what we've covered at the end of class in case we missed anything."

Students also use e-mail to criticize one another, Professor Ahdieh said. He paraphrased this comment: "You're spending too much time with my moron classmates and you ought to be focusing on those of us who are getting the material."

Michael Greenstone, an economics professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, said he once received an e-mail message late one evening from a student who had recently come to the realization that he was gay and was struggling to cope.

Professor Greenstone said he eventually helped the student get an appointment with a counselor. "I don't think we would have had the opportunity to discuss his realization and accompanying feelings without e-mail as an icebreaker," he said.

A few professors said they had rules for e-mail and told their students how quickly they would respond, how messages should be drafted and what types of messages they would answer.

Meg Worley, an assistant professor of English at Pomona College in California, said she told students that they must say thank you after receiving a professor's response to an e-mail message.

"One of the rules that I teach my students is, the less powerful person always has to write back," Professor Worley said.

PCB May Hire American Felding Coach

Islamabad, Feb 26 (PTI) Pakistan Cricket Board is contemplating the name of an American fielding coach ahead of former South African fielding great Jonty Rhodes for the national team's series against England.

Mike Young, a former baseball player, coach and manager, is presently working as a consultant with the New Zealand team on three-week contract after being credited to produce good results with the World Champion Australia in the recent VB series.

"The feedback about Young is that he is an excellent coach and has produced good results with the Australians and New Zealanders. Young has recently gained praise for his work with the Australians during the VB Series," a PCB source was quoted as saying by 'The News'.

PCB's ad-hoc committee last week decided to hire a fielding coach for Pakistan team and captain Inzamam-ul-Haq suggested that he should be hired three to four weeks before the England tour in mid June.

The committee had sounded off the name of Rhodes but, sources said, the Board had been told to check up on Young who also work's with Australian cricket.

"Basically the Board wanted to hire someone who could start reinforcing some fundamental parts of the trade for the Pakistani players instead of trying to reinvent things. First and foremost in the list of priorities was the players' attitude towards fielding," the source said.

The Board has said the fielding coach would not travel with the team and will work with the players in their training camp prior to a tour. PTI

Press Sense - 6 / 3 / 06 : Mumbai ... Idlis!

Mumbai ... Idlis! *****

If you love idli, Sonal Fernandes tells you where to head for exotic variations like the tangy cucumber idli and more.

A visit to the Idli House in Mumbai is a must, both for foodies with an idli fetish and those on a diet.

Located in the hustle and bustle of King's Circle, you might just miss this tiny yet welcoming spot, which opened last Dusshera and is always teeming with people.

It serves an amazing variety of idlis, from the plain steamed variety to khottu, mudho and more.

A khotu (amusing as it may sound) is an idli tucked into a triangular cup made of jackfruit leaves. As a steaming plate of khottu arrives, the sweet aroma of jackfruit fills the air and you know the delicious, hot idli is waiting inside its special cup. ...

Putting the "con" ***** in condiments

HONG KONG (Reuters) - More than 100 South American thieves have descended on Hong Kong to target the city's annual jewelry show, the South China Morning Post Tuesday quoted a police source as saying.

Their tactics range from simply stealing bags while their owners are not looking to distracting them by spraying tomato ketchup on their clothes, the newspaper said.

Crime syndicates from Chile, Colombia, Peru and Venezuela were active both inside and outside the convention center where the show started Monday, working in teams of three or four and wearing business suits, the police source was quoted as saying.

They were believed to be targeting show exhibitors toting valuables to and from the venue, it said.

"Their common tactics are simple. They steal unattended briefcases and bags while victims are having breakfast or having a drink in a coffee shop or restaurant," the newspaper quoted the source as saying.

"They also distract victims by spraying tomato sauce***** on their clothing or dropping bundles of banknotes ***** on the ground before grabbing valuables and fleeing."

Saturday, a 55-year-old man lost a bag containing $40,000 in a shop in central Hong Kong while trying to pick up three ***** $100 bills left by a gang of four South American men, it said.

The newspaper said several South American men had been arrested in recent days for stealing bags. Police believed they were jewel thieves, and may have been robbing people to pay for their expenses during the show.

Press Sense - 17 / 3 / 06 : Euro-English

Euro-English

.

The EU (European Commission ) has just announced an agreement whereby English will be the official language of the European Union rather than German, which was the other possibility.

As part of the negotiations, the British Government conceded that English spelling had some room for improvement and has accepted a 5-year phase-in plan that would become known as "Euro-English".

In the first year, "s" will replace the soft "c". Sertainly, this will make the sivil servants jump with joy.

The hard "c" will be dropped in favour of "k". This should klear up konfusion, and keyboards kan have one less letter.

There will be growing publik enthusiasm in the sekond year when the troublesome "ph" will be replaced with "f". This will make words like fotograf 20% shorter.

In the 3rd year, publik akseptanse of the new spelling kan be expekted to reach the stage where more komplikated changes are possible.

Governments will enkourage the removal of double letters which have always ben a deterent to akurate speling.

Also, al wil agre that the horibl mes of the silent "e" in the languag is disgrasful and it should go away.

By the 4th yer people wil be reseptiv to steps such as replasing "th" with "z" and "w" with "v".

During ze fifz yer, ze unesesary "o" kan be dropd from vords kontaining "ou" and after ziz fifz yer, ve vil hav a reil sensibl riten styl.

Zer vil be no mor trubl or difikultis and evrivun vil find it ezi tu understand ech oza. Ze drem of a united urop vil finali kum tru.

Und efter ze fifz yer, ve vil al be speking German like zey vunted in ze forst plas.
