Celebrities to add glitter

Hyderabad: A rare opportunity to run along with celebrities like Pullela Gopi Chand, Sania Mirza, Gagan Narang beckons one and all as the Intelli Group Hyderabad 10K half-marathon takes place in the city, from Peoples Plaza (Necklace Road) to Charminar and back, on November 27.
According to Aparna Reddy, chairperson of the event, about 25,000 participants are expected to run this time. "It may be recalled that the 10K Run was initially started as a10km run for promoting fitness, health and fun. But now we have decided to go one step forward. The plan includes converting this mega event into Hyderabad Marathon, on the lines of some of the world's famous marathons," she said.
The half-marathon is fully supported by various organisations including Sports Authority of Andhra Pradesh, HUDA, MCH , AP Police and Department of Tourism and Culture. With a prize money involved, the response this time is expected to be much big than the first two editions.
Former All England champion Pullela Gopi Chand, spokesperson of 10K Foundation, said the run stood also for a social cause and last year Rs. 2 lakhs was contributed towards heart surgeries for kids, and also to six adopted schools. "This year the plans include scholarships to young talent and also financial assistance to sportspersons of yesteryear," he explained.
Swaranjit Sen, Director General of Police, the brainchild of the half-marathon concept, lauded the efforts of the 10K Foundation in this regard. "Personally, I feel these events are essential for the society for the simple reason that physical fitness plays a significant role in the success of an individual," he said. "With the proceeds going to the Mission Sports — which is engaged in welfare activities — it is hoped the Hyderabadis will respond in a big way," he added. Mr. Sen formally handed over the first registration form to tennis sensation Sania Mirza and then to ace shooter Gagan Narang.
In her brief speech, Sania said the run would go a long way in ensuring a certain degree of awareness in terms of physical fitness amongst the citizens of twin cities. "If body permits me, I will be there at the venue," she remarked.
