To Learn Telugu

by Adagio » Tue Nov 15, 2005 2:15 pm

Hi,

I've been here in Hyderabad for the past couple of years. I'm a Tamilian, and when I came here first I could speak neither Telugu nor Hindi.

Now my situation is much better since I pickedup some Telugu.

It's sort of funny, that I come across places where they teach French, German, Italian & many more languages, but never could find some place where I can learn Telugu properly.

Many people advise me to watch TV, read Telugu magazines/dailies. Yeah, I agree. They help upto some extend. But moving with local people, watching TV channels are more informal ways which suppliments the process of learning... I wonder why there shouldn't be a 'Proper' way to learn!?

Is there any proper institute or atleast home-run coaching class available here in Hyderabad, to help those, like me, who are eager to learn Telugu.

Learn telugu Online

I too had learnt to read telugu by Reading Newspapers/magazines names and remembering the alphabets structure! the most popular ones were Eenadu, vipula, chatura etc :P

then I started asking Telugu movies names and then related the word-structuring (with the maatras & all that). Pretty soon i could read telugu, altho at a slow speed.

And once u get the alphabets & structuring part, you can try reaidng destination names off a bus. For Ex. If there are two letters and the second one resembles 'Ta' alphabet, it could be 'Koti' and so on......

All da best

Well I took a 'Learn Telugu in 30 days' book, sat for a couple of day and practiced the alphabets. It needed few tweakings, ommissions & inclusions, round-table conferences  to make that knowledge usable in the Hyderabadi scenario. (Still I pause at 'pa' to make sure whether it's pa or 'va'

Now I browse through Eenadu etc, atleast the 'Idhi Sangadhi' section :) The next step is watching Telugu movie DVDs, with subtitles on, and watching TV programs (I give up TV very soon, Ads bore me to death)

Still I'm wondering about the possibility of formal training, atleast to get a deeper insight, to read and enjoy good books, poetry etc. My question is, when u can learn French here, formally, why not Telugu?

Well, IMHO one shouldn't always think about benefits (like getting a job, earning money...) before learning a thing, particularly a language.

Being in a 'Telugu Speaking' place - Isn't it a good enough reason? When many people (including me) learn it for the sake of survival or out of necessity, why not to learn it just a bit more than what actually is needed for survival here?

Otherwise let me put it this way, while back @ Chennai I'd never have thought about learning Telugu. Being here gives me a perfect reason/opportunity to learn it. why not to learn it perfectly?

---------

Still ur question - What's Opportunity?! - is puzzling me. I see a lot of people learn music here, (FYI: I'm too am a musician by profession), & many people learn French, particularly. I dont know whether everybody who learn Music, do so because they want become professional musicians.. similarly I dont know whether, those who learn French, want to go to France or make money otherwise with their Linguistic abilities.
