Even in India you will get respect only if you are fair skinned.

Otherwise you will be cursed, separated, abused, and insulted.

So black Indian guys have started using the fairness cream.

I think this is a welcome development for the businessmen.

i think this color preferance among indians is the result of inferiority complex of indians vis a vis europeans. ancient indians never had this hangup. texts like kamasutra never talks of 'fairness' as an ideal color...hell it never talks of any color as an ideal one!

even popular mytho figures like krishna, rama n draupadi were said to be dark in complexion and their attractiveness described in glowing terms.

ahem...i myself prefer dusky n dark girls over fair ones 8)

wink...wink... @daisy ;)

CAD You are right VERY VERY RIGHT.

Cleopatra was darkest in Complexion.

Still the Great Roman kings preferred her.

She died by suicide (Allowing a poisonous snake to move around her and bite her)

After Julius died she got broken down and went in to depression.

Its human nature to always want what you cant get. In this case, most Indians are of wheatish complexion, so they want a lighter and rosier color. Here in America (and Im sure European countries as well), people vie for a bronze tan.

So in India, people will continue to bleach, slather on fairness creams, and stay away from the sun until they achieve the fairness they desire.

And here, the people will sun-bathe, lie under tanning beds, and use suntan lotions to darken themselves to golden perfection.

I dont care so much for what color I am, as long as I have unblemished and clear skin. :)

also the ad. showed college going ppl. ideally i would have thought there would some sort of protests on this..atleast the women got their act together when they protested for a similar ad. in 2003 targeting women..

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/south_asia/3089495.stm

i disagree that this attitude exists only with the illiterate classes...just take a look at all the matrimonial ads placed by educated n oh-so-upper class families...

even dark complexioned men and women call themselves "wheatish" in their own matrimonial ads...

"wheatish" is neither english nor any recognized color. its used by dark and not-so-fair people to portray themselves as lighter skinned than they actually are...

I agree with you, Andy. Ive read many matrimonial ads in Indian magazines that fairness is a requirement for interested brides. Even women ask for guys (to marry) who are fair too.

the funny thing is that dark complexioned guys in india usually want a fair complexioned wife... if they are prejudiced abt color, why cant they think that the fair girl they marry wud also not want a dark colored man...? :) prejudice shud work both ways or there shud be no prejudice at all....
