Midweek Special ... Pillows

Pillow Talk

Finding the right pillow is the stuff nursery rhymes are made of. Goldilocks, in Goldilocks and the Three Bears, wasn’t going to be fobbed off with the wrong pillow.
She continued her search up in the Three Bears’ bedroom until she found a pillow that was just right.

At Palazzo Versace’s luxurious hotel on Australia’s Gold Coast, menus aren’t restricted to the dining room. There’s also a pillow menu, with a selection of seven different types for guests to choose from.

So, if the pillow provided in the room isn’t to the guest’s liking, just one call to Housekeeping will see a pile of pillows arrive at the door, promising comfortable slumber. ...

October Wonder Pillows

It's a Man, Man!

From Tokyo Hands I thought this was pretty funny: anatomically correct pillows for men and women. Now you no longer have to feel lonely on those cold winter nights when there is no one to cuddle up next to. The man appears to be shaped like a plumber, while the woman is some modernist interpretation of Jennifer Lopez I think.

I wonder why they positioned them in this particular fashion?

Deep Fried Potato And Chickpea "Pillows"... a la s

Deep Fried Potato And Chickpea "Pillows" ... a la samosas

Image

deep fried potato and chickpea "pillows" with coriander and mango relish

...a la samosas

used spring rolls wrappers that were too small to stuff and shape into triangles so i call them pillows.
i have taken liberties with a recipe from a little cookbook "the best of India," by Balraj Khanna to try and duplicate the first-time-bite-experience. a British friend persuaded me to try samosas at a little bazaar in the courtyard of what used to be the Quad complex in Makati. way back when. after one batch of big bites i went back for more from the little tent and asked the nice lady for extra chutney: a heavenly green mango cilantro "pesto"-like concoction which went perfectly with the samosas.
my ma's recent batch of pickled green mango turned out too salty so i thought i'd lighten it up with a whirl of cilantro and "calamansi" citron juice. it turned out really refreshingly green and sour tasting.

for the samosas:1 2-in. piece fresh ginger, peeled & coarsely chopped
1 tbsp. pomegranate seeds (anardana)
5 tbsps. vegetable oil
1/2 tsp. cumin seeds
1 tsp. coriander seeds, crushed
1 cup finely chopped onions
1 & 1/2 tsp. garam masala*
1 pound potatoes (about 2 large), peeled, boiled & coarsely chopped
1 cup chickpeas "garbanzos," canned
1/3 cup thawed frozen peas
spring rolls wrappers
vegetable oil for deep frying

process chili, ginger and pomegranate seeds in a blender until fine.
in a medium saucepan, heat 3 tbsps. of the oil over medium-high heat until very hot but not smoking. add the cumin and coriander seeds and cook, stirring constantly,
30 seconds, or until the seeds pop and blacken.
add the onions and the remaining oil. cook, stirring occasionally, 7 minutes, or until the onions are golden brown. reduce the heat to low, add the chili-ginger mixture, and cook, stirring constantly, 4 minutes. stir in the garam masala, potatoes, and peas, and cook, stirring occasionally, 5 minutes. set aside to cool completely.

wrap in spring roll wrappers and deep fry for about 4 minutes or until golden brown.
drain in paper towels and serve with cilantro-green mango chutney.
there's a little "punjab cafe" a stone's throw away from home where i get a quick fix, very rarely since i am the only one who adores this cuisine in my household. they serve their samosas with a tangy tamarind-onion chutney.

*garam masala can be store-bought or home made (grind together in a spice mill or with mortar and pestle, 1 tbsp. black peppercorns, 2 tsps. cumin seeds, 1 1-inch pc. of cinnamon stick, 10 green cardamom pods, 1 tsp. cloves, and 3 bay leaves. store in an airtight container. this makes about 3 tbsps.).

Chinese Chrysanthemum ... Flower Pillows ...!

by HH » Wed Nov 30, 2005 11:04 am

Image

More on Mums ...! - Flower Pillows ...!

Who Needs PILLOWS ... when One Can Rest One's Eyes On Beautiful Flower" Pillows"!

When scholars argue over which was the first flower in human history to be cultivated strictly for the garden, they're talking about three possibilities: the lily in Crete, the Iris in Egypt, and the chrysanthemum in China. These are the big three-the granddaddies of the thousands of garden flowers that have come after.

The importance of Chinese horticultural history can't be overstated. China has been called 'the mother of gardens' because the involvement of flowers in art, literature, folklore and thought is more intimate and complex than almost any other civilization.

The chrysanthemum holds a central place of honour in this culture of flowers. In Chinese life they are associated with autumn, a season that is both romantic and melancholy-the time when yang gives way to yin as winter approaches. Confucius called them 'yellow glory' and recommended that they be used as an object of meditation. He observed that, just as the chrysanthemum blooms near the end of the year, so can old age be a time of richness. The flower became the symbol of Confucianism and of wisdom itself.

Chrysanthemums are also directly associated with long life-even immortality. A famous Chinese physician once noted that the inhabitants of a valley covered with the flowers, who drank from a river flowing through the valley, lived exceptionally long lives. A tradition evolved that drinking chrysanthemum wine on the 9th day of the 9th month of the year will ensure you will live a long life. On a practical level, a tea made from the dried flowers is used as a 'cooling drink' during the heat of summer, and a pillow filled with dried petals will provide relief from the heat while sleeping.

By the end of their first 2000 years of cultivation the chrysanthemum had evolved from being a single yellow flower to over 20 varieties that now included white and purple flowers. But a wonderful gift came to Chinese gardeners with the introduction of spectacular new varieties from Japan. It seems that sometime in the 4th century chrysanthemums had arrived in Japan, probably from Korea. The Japanese fell in love with the flower and cultivated it with great devotion. It became the emblem of the royal court, the Chrysanthemum Throne, and for centuries only the nobility were allowed to grow them.

Imperial gardeners were extremely talented and creative flower breeders who produced dramatic new shapes, sizes and colours, which were displayed at huge public shows. In fact, the Japanese flag is a stylized chrysanthemum, a central disc with sixteen petals, not the rising sun as is commonly believed in the west. When these spectacular new varieties were introduced to Chinese gardeners they triggered a renaissance in chrysanthemum cultivation once again. This passion continues with elaborate Chinese-inspired chrysanthemum festivals at botanic gardens around the world each autumn.

In Chinese art there is a tradition of painting what are called the "four gentlemen" flowers: the bamboo which keeps its leaves throughout the winter; the plum-blossoms which bloom in early spring, even before the last snows have melted; the subtle, fragrant orchid that perfumes the summer; and the chrysanthemum which flowers through the cold days of autumn. Together these four plants are believed to symbolize the noble spirit of a person of virtue-and the most revered of them all is the wise and ancient chrysanthemum.
