In Memory of R.K. Narayan
R.K. Narayan passed away this morning in a Chennai (Madras) hospital. Narayan was a pioneer of Indo-Anglian writers. He had a style of writing which was all his own. He started writing during an age when writing fiction meant storytelling and there are few people dead or alive who could tell stories the way Narayan did. He told stories of simple folks trying to live their simple lives in a changing world. His characters were ordinary Indians trying to blend tradition with modernisation, resulting in often tragi-comic situations. One could get a feel of real India, especially South India, through his writings. He wrote in English but his writings conveyed a unique flavour as if he were writing in the native tongue. His style- simple, unpretentious and witty- won him admirers throughout the globe. His admirers included Somerset Maugham, John Updike and Graham Green, who called him the "novelist I admire most in the English language".
Rasipuram Krishnaswamy Aiyar Narainaswamy was born in Madras in 1906. He worked as a teacher and a journalist before venturing into fiction. His first novel, "Swamy and Friends" was published in 1935, followed by such classics as "Bachelor of Arts", "Mr. Sampat' and "The Guide". In all, he wrote 15 novels, travelogues, autobiography, several essays and short stories. Some of his works were embellished with cartoons by his famous brother, R.K.Laxman.
Mr. Narayan created the enchanted world of Malgudi. His readers knew of the streets, bazaars, neighbourhoods, schools and other institutions of Malgudi as if it were a real town.
Mr. Narayan won numerous awards and honours for his works. He won the Sahitya Akademi award for "The Guide" and the A C Benson Medal of the Royal Society of Literature of which he was an elected fellow. He was honoured with the Padma Bhushan in 1964, nominated to the Rajya Sabha in 1989 and elected an honorary member of the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters in 1982. The universities of Mysore, Delhi, Leeds and Yorkshire conferred honorary doctorates on him.
His works were made into films and TV serials. "The Guide", made in English and Hindi by Dev Anand, was commercially a most successful venture, but Narayan was not happy with the screen adaptation of his novel. His other novel which was made into a film was "Mr. Sampat" *****, by S.S. Vasan of Gemini Films. The late actor Moti Lal, brought the character of Mr. Sampat to life in that film.
Indo-Anglian writing and writers are flourishing these days. They have come a long way from the time when Narayan used to wait daily for the postman outside his house, hoping to get a letter of acceptance from a publisher from London. But the genre of simple storytelling, represented by R.K.Narayan, will never see the like of him again.

Costa Rica! ... COFFEE!
All our Costa Rica coffee beans are slow roasted and each bag is dated (roast on dating) to guarantee freshness. All coffee beans come in air tight silver foil bag with one way valves to preserve the great taste. You can choose the desired grind and roast for your beans. Taste the difference that fresh roasting makes!
Over a hundred years ago Costa Rica, mandated that every family grow at least a few bushes of coffee on their property. Additionally, they offered large plots of land to those who would be willing to grow coffee and devote their lives to it. The result is that today Costa Ricans knows their coffee. They treat their coffee plantations as though they were fine tropical gardens. Costa Rican coffees are some of the worlds best.
Bordered to the north by Nicaragua and to the east by Panama. It has both a Caribbean and a Pacific coast. A series of volcanic mountain chains runs from the Nicaraguan border in the north-west to the Panamanian border in the south-east, splitting the country in two. In the center of these ranges is a high-altitude plain, with coastal lowlands on either side. Which make perfect growing conditions for high quality SHB coffees.
Our costa rican coffee carries the SHB (Strictly Hard Bean ) label meaning it is grown above 3,900 feet. These beans have fine acidity, full body and vibrant flavor which give it a distinctive character - well balanced and sweetly smooth.
