Or maybe her bf/husband/whatever likes sania

And how does it matter if she is ugly or pretty....what matters is talent and hardwork and success and she has all of them.

Way to go Sania!!!!

Sania's talent on the courts is questioning though her talents with the media are very good. Mark my words, I have this feeling she is going to turn into another Anna Kournikova.

Breaking into the top 50 is a relatively easy job CAD...Most players from 50-250 have more or less similar abilities, give or take some. If you look at the career graph of some top ranked players, you'll see that they reached the top 10 from the 200's in the same time that Sania took to reach the top 50 from #160.

Most of her points have come from Tier-II and Tier-III events, which can push her from 160 to 50 but not beyond that. Her record against top opponents shows that she has the game but not the stamina or the nerves to last in a long match on a big stage.

And I don't agree with you either Luci....Anna was atleast placed in the top 10 for some time. I seriously doubt if Sania can ever achieve that.

I just don't understand why our media is turning into an international joke by glorifying Sania after she loses a match. And the same media had poor Mahesh Bhupathy and Koneru Humpy as mere snippets even when they'd reached the pinnacle (read Mahesh's Mixed Doubles win at Wimbledon and Humpy's showing at the Women's world championship).

@Betty :

Agreed that Sania has talent & she works hard...but success? Maybe the hindi dictum Andhon mein Kaana Raja fits her to a T. She's lauded as successful only because Women's tennis in India had hardly anything to show before her.

I agree. And you answered your own question. Granted she might not be comparable at international level, but right now, that's all we have got.

yes..that i agree...she was lauded as a heroine after she lost to serena in australia...anyone might think she won the tournament or something...
Long gone HP wrote:Maybe the hindi dictum Andhon mein Kaana Raja fits her to a T.
thats not a fair comment HP...she is doing something that wud bring credit to the entire country. just coz she is the first Indian girl to do so doesnt mean its to be seen the way u are mentioning.
Long gone HP wrote:She's lauded as successful only because Women's tennis in India had hardly anything to show before her.
yes...and thats another reason why she has to be encouraged and supported by the media without overboard in their praise...

i have read articles in Gulf and Paki newspapers praising her and holding her as a shining example of the positive face of Islam that is ignored by world media.

i will definitely say she is a Pride of India.

I'll Say Maybe. But Reading HP saar's Post in the Awards thread, I too can't help agreeing with him. IMHO, Sania doees'nt deserve the Award, atleast now that is. Agreed that she is talented but success can't be measured by talent alone. And regarding the points that sania has garnered to reach the Top 50,a chunk of them were from the Wins in Tier II & II Events and a few in the Tier I events where she managed to reach the Second/Third Round.

I Don't remember the person whom she beat while getting a good chunk of points, but i remember that she lost in the next match to a player ranked much below.

Now a cynic would say that she played for the points and once that is done,it is Switch off Time. But being no cynic,i'll say that it was one of those things that Just happens in Sport. (It is a Great Leveller)

Regarding the award, lemme ask one thing. Where was Sania one year ago? It was just recently that a String of Good Performances coupled with Media attention that she became popular. Instead of Giving her the award on that criteria alone, the Govt. Would have done better to let her mature and let her bloom into a more 'Complete' and 'All-Round' Player.

Now She does'nt look like a kinda person who may let success get to her head, but who Knows!!

I too would like to know the Criteria that went behing her nomination for the award.

Sania rocks

by Akshay » Sat Aug 27, 2005 5:30 pm

Sania rocks for the simple fact that she dared to dream and persevered to make that dream a reality. By doing so she has ofered an alternative for our bollywood and cricket obsessed and overwhelmed youngsters.

She is a role model for she displays all the traits of a trail blazer.

Good luck to her and all of us.

CAD - this is what I meant when I used the dictum Andhon mein Kaana Raja. I don't know what's so role-modelesque about breaking into the top 50 in any field for that matter. She's 18 - more than the age at which girls from other countries have ruled the game. Think Seles (17), Hingis (16), the Williams sisters (16-17) - they were world no. 1's at an age younger than Sania. I'm sure to get arguments about the facilities, exposure etc. But I don't think anyone can deny the fact that Seles, Sharapova etc. come from countries that are poorer than ours. Moreover, she has the airs of a champion. People might mistake it as self-confidence; but self-confidence should stem from success and not the other way round. And the only success she can show is that she's been the best that India has produced. So are so many others but all damp squibs in the international arena.

Why doesn't one think of people like Jyotirmoyee Sikdar who beat the chinese (among the best atheletics nation in the world) at their strong event - middle distance running? Why can't Indians think of emulating achievers as role models? Why do they always get overawed with mediocrity decorated with media hype?

Nirupama Vaidyanathan, Manisha Malhotra, Rushmi Chakravarthy etc. have been there before Sania but I won't think twice before accepting that Sania is way better than the others mentioned here.

Even Andhas need a Raja, if a Kana steps up then the Kana should get the due credit.

You are right, on a global historical scale she is not even a blip. But from a national perspective she is an alternative-career-beacon.

I'm sure to get arguments about the facilities, exposure etc. But I don't think anyone can deny the fact that Seles, Sharapova etc. come from countries that are poorer than ours.

Not in per capita terms.

Moreover, she has the airs of a champion. People might mistake it as self-confidence; but self-confidence should stem from success and not the other way round. Media being our interface to the modern world, it does decide who gets the crown. I totally agree that Jyothirmoyee, along with Anju, Gopi and many before and after them should be celebrated more prominently. Unfortunately their sports are not year round phenomena as Tennis is, thus they do not fit the media space to reiterate their achievements. The fact is that Sania carries the hero stature deservingly and admirably well and she has to be commended for that.

forgot to add.....

Sania was given a GVK sponsership when she was nothing, there were better indian players on the tour.

Sania was promoted by the GVK group from the past 5/6 years, apart from other sponsors GVK group itself has invested nearly 1 crore on sania.......

How many of the Indian girls listed above had so much money to go ahead?

Sania is doing well!! We should appreciate her rather than pulling her down. How many tennis starts India has produced till now? In fact how many have represented India in Grand Slam? Mahesh and Leander does not have time to sort out their differences. They are paired with someone else. And that too doubles... I am not saying that doubles crown is mean by anyway but just see the crowd a singles title generates...

And if Sania is good looking and trying to become a style icon, what's the harm in this? So far as she is playing good tennis, the other things should not matter much. They also need to sell themsleves. Think of our stupid cricketers who do nothing but earn so much from the advertisements.

Getting into top 50 is a great achievement. There may be other talents in this nation but a sponsor is not here to go for a talent hunt and then sponsor... what ever comes first gets the oppurtunity.
