Agreed that Sania has talent & she works hard...but success? Maybe the hindi dictum Andhon mein Kaana Raja fits her to a T. She's lauded as successful only because Women's tennis in India had hardly anything to show before her.

yes..that i agree...she was lauded as a heroine after she lost to serena in australia...anyone might think she won the tournament or something...Long gone HP wrote:I just don't understand why our media is turning into an international joke by glorifying Sania after she loses a match.
thats not a fair comment HP...she is doing something that wud bring credit to the entire country. just coz she is the first Indian girl to do so doesnt mean its to be seen the way u are mentioning.Long gone HP wrote:Maybe the hindi dictum Andhon mein Kaana Raja fits her to a T.
yes...and thats another reason why she has to be encouraged and supported by the media without overboard in their praise...Long gone HP wrote:She's lauded as successful only because Women's tennis in India had hardly anything to show before her.

Breaking into the top 50 is a relatively easy job CAD...Most players from 50-250 have more or less similar abilities, give or take some. If you look at the career graph of some top ranked players, you'll see that they reached the top 10 from the 200's in the same time that Sania took to reach the top 50 from #160.
Most of her points have come from Tier-II and Tier-III events, which can push her from 160 to 50 but not beyond that. Her record against top opponents shows that she has the game but not the stamina or the nerves to last in a long match on a big stage.
And I don't agree with you either Luci....Anna was atleast placed in the top 10 for some time. I seriously doubt if Sania can ever achieve that.
I just don't understand why our media is turning into an international joke by glorifying Sania after she loses a match. And the same media had poor Mahesh Bhupathy and Koneru Humpy as mere snippets even when they'd reached the pinnacle (read Mahesh's Mixed Doubles win at Wimbledon and Humpy's showing at the Women's world championship).

CAD - this is what I meant when I used the dictum Andhon mein Kaana Raja.
Even Andhas need a Raja, if a Kana steps up then the Kana should get the due credit.
I don't know what's so role-modelesque about breaking into the top 50 in any field for that matter. She's 18 - more than the age at which girls from other countries have ruled the game. Think Seles (17), Hingis (16), the Williams sisters (16-17) - they were world no. 1's at an age younger than Sania.
You are right, on a global historical scale she is not even a blip. But from a national perspective she is an alternative-career-beacon.
I'm sure to get arguments about the facilities, exposure etc. But I don't think anyone can deny the fact that Seles, Sharapova etc. come from countries that are poorer than ours.
Not in per capita terms.
Moreover, she has the airs of a champion. People might mistake it as self-confidence; but self-confidence should stem from success and not the other way round. And the only success she can show is that she's been the best that India has produced. So are so many others but all damp squibs in the international arena.
Why doesn't one think of people like Jyotirmoyee Sikdar who beat the chinese (among the best atheletics nation in the world) at their strong event - middle distance running? Why can't Indians think of emulating achievers as role models? Why do they always get overawed with mediocrity decorated with media hype?
