Do we really want to be engineers?

Why does every Telugu have to be an engineer? Why do our parents want us to take MPC in inter and then engg and then U. S. and then marraige to a good Telugu girl? Almost everyone I know is an engg... almost my whole class from engg is in the U. S.... I for one hate engineering, but am doin it for my parents... I guess there are a lot of dudes like that!! Wonder how long this will go on... How many ppl are happy doin this?

Guys,

remember that the grass is always greener on the other side. If you are thinking that you could have been doing something else in place of \"this crappy engineering\", just remember the grass.

Take care and enjoy. Dont sweat the small stuff.

I am Engineer, now In US hoping to marry a girl in couple of years, reading your post,I asked myself why Did I become an Engineer.Neither my parents nor friends forced me to be an Engineer,Infact my dad wanted to take CEC.
I still havent got an answer to the question.
Good things that happen in an enginnering college are
If you ask me ,You graduate from a boy to MAN .
You Improve your personal skills, and best of all you\'ll find friends for life and you broaden your horizons.
most people say they would like to go back to school,Given an opputunity I\'ll go back to any \"Engineering college\".
I strongly believe the cliche \"Engineers make the world\" and they really do.

Most of the parents have this bad habit of forcing their desires onto the children. Well, there is not much choice left for the children, \'coz every kid wants to make his parents happy, make them feel proud and stuff like that. But at some point of time in our life we always feel this dissatisfaction for not doing something in which we are really interested. But unfortunately, I cud not find out a solution to this problem even after talking to so many people. Best wud be, not making the same mistake with our kids.

I was pretty much made an outcast in school for not wanting to be an engineer. And no... I'm not telugu. But funnily enough... when I meet people in Hyderabad... many a time the first question that pops up is, "Where did you do your engineering from?"

Its gr8

by heretic » Fri Nov 05, 2004 3:30 pm

Hey,

I donno why you hate engineering. I'm proud to b an engineer. Let me tell you one thing.....The institure where you do ur eng. is a major criteria here. If you are place in a well reputated collg then its wud b gr8. Now ...i dont say to take eng as a profession man...look at me..i'm a mechanical engineer...but now i'm a software developer...and make a note that i've been out of the collg recently this yr. I enjoyed each and every min of my eng. life. Infact i'll rate those 4 yrs as the best out of my best days of life. Just do it as you did ur schooling and then after you can do what you want in life.

Man..dont think abt all those things...you dont get these days again...eng days ROCKS man...just go for it.....

Good for you. The point that is being made here is about the fuss/insistence... and when you're forced to do something, you don't enjoy it. I could have been an engineer or a doctor if I so chose... but I might not have been happy doing it. I think people should do what makes them happy rather than do what makes people around them happy.

Education is not for happiness or for some enjoyment. Ofcourse if it comes on the way you are lucky. Coming to your point...Look Eng is now a days has become like primary education...no matter what you gonna b in your life...having a BE/Btech in your resume will improve its weight...

moreover you can learn a lot in Eng..you'll change by yourself when you come out of the course ...I bet it

You can learn a lot anywhere... as long as you're willing to learn. You can change anytime you want... who says I need to go do 4 years of engineering to change.

Think about that a little more please...

thats one of the biggest misconceptions held my most indians abt Engineering. those days are long gone. there are so many new areas where one can make a mark and prosper. u do not need an engineering degree unless u want to work in a field that requires it, like construction, aviation, electronics, machinery, automobiles or making related software etc etc

for instance normal commercial software developemnt and testing do not require a degree in engineering, tho many indian companies insist on it.

MBAs do not require an engineering degree to sell soap or white goods, or even to recruit ppl (HR).

if u keep yr eyes open and ear to the ground u can see a 100 areas where u can prosper without a BE/BTech
wtf? i no longer care if my posts hurt yr feelings

Sad but true. Cannot help it. They rub it on you. Even if parents do not force you, peer pressure forces you to believe that there's no future besides engineering. Finally most people do not get anything out of it. Having to get a career, establish oneself in life and all is well and fine, but what people fail to realise in the long run is if they are really happy with what they are. The point is to be happy, not to do something just because it has to be done. I have seen many talented people waste their talent by becoming engineers. What a waste of resources!!! How many people are really happy doing engineering? Please don't tell me that demographically most people in andhra are interested in becoming engineers/doctors.

Why give in to peer pressure? Like I said, I was an outcast because I chose not to... but I'm alive... and happy... and even laugh at those people today... I even feel sorry them.. for they knew not what they were doing. Some of them don't have a clue even today

The thing about marriage to a good telugu girl... I think that community bias exists everywhere. I don't think you can single out one community and say that they're open to intercaste/community marriages. It takes all sorts...

I wonder what happens to guys that go to other colleges... maybe its about them that they say, "Boys will always be boys???"

Again... I'm not saying engineering is good or bad... I'm saying that no one should force anything on you. Do what you feel is right... do what you think you want to do... most of the time, if you follow your heart, you will find happiness. If you don't, just hang in there... she'll come and find you.

Peer pressure is very tough to handle. It's very easy to say but, it is easier said than done. And I am not only talking abt peer pressure here, but also the pressure from within the family, not necessarily your parents.

I agree... but who said that life is easy? Think about it... peer pressure for a while... or a lifetime of thinking that you should have done something else. Life is too short to harbour regrets
