I am finally going to put this debate to rest here. Among the many cars that I have driven (NIssan, Honda, Indica, Maruti 800, Esteem, Subaru, Ford 4x4, Mercedes) the bestest of the lot is the good old Premier Padmini 1100. Nothing beats it in terms of the closeness between man and machine. It takes quite some skill to master the car, and not everyone can drive it. But once you understand the mood of the vehicle, it is among the most blissful cars to drive.

So what if you need to check the oil and the water each day? What if you need to constantly monitor the brake fluid levels? What if it might take more than one turn of the ignition to get it started on a cold day? It is still a beautiful baby. :D

about Lancer, its a decent and comfortable car, but woefully underpowered compared to others in its class (City, Baleno, Corolla etc), the diesel model was pathetic...the power to weight ratio was bad and as a result the acceleration was lousy. On hindsight, its a good bargain. If I sold it to scrap, it would have fetched me only 50 bucks, which, btw, happened to my friend on the same day mrgreen:

now, Ladies and Gentlemen, presenting:

The Skoda Octavia RS 1.8T

India's first turbo petrol car.

Image

A Petrol-powered, 20-valve, DOHC, turbocharged inline-four Cylinder beauty which displaces 1781cc.

The RS gets an aggressive front end, xenon headlamps, a rear spoiler, a sunroof, leather/fabric combo upholstery, and best of all, a bright yellow body colour option.

But it's the engine that's the star of the show. Frankly, it absolutely rocks. Floor the throttle and the engine's meaty thrum and the whistling turbo egg you on. Dump the clutch and the acceleration does not disappoint.

The RS has something Skoda call 'Anti-Slip Regulation' or ASR which is a traction/stability control and it works extremely well. ASR just gets on with doing what it's supposed to – keep the car in the right trajectory. During some high-speed cornering on gravel-strewn roads, for instance, the ASR would work its magic and the car would rocket down the road with unabated velocity. No lifting off the throttle, no arm-twirling steering corrections, no panic – just high speed, steady-state cornering.

The Skoda Octavia RS 1.8T will be one of the most performance-oriented and technologically advanced cars around in India.

With its combination of classy styling, an engine that's more powerful than competitors' bigger, more expensive D-segment cars, ride comfort, enormous luggage space and handling prowess, the 1.8 Turbo makes great package...all for around 11-13 Lakhs only

yeah...it was much better than the Padmini, but unfortunately it was also technically backward and had to compete against cheap, hitech and better models.

same case with the Contessa...it was one of the most comfortable cars and even looked like a mini limo..but look happened to it...it has an inefficient and archaic engine and for its price (abt 5 lakhs) anyone could buy a superior car.

The back seats are somewhat uncomfortable. But still, it be a very nice car with a good top speed.

I guess the good old ambi is the only survivor from the pre-90s era that too because of its importance in the govt. car fleets.

Looks same :? except for those porsche like slant headlights.

I dont understand why HM persists with that design. They got a very good engine under the hood, all they have to do is change the looks. Sure it will cost some money but it will change the image of ambassador.
