Because pirated copies have been very popular in India, and now that Bill is taking steps to cut down the piracy some firms might just switch to Linux just for the heck of it. Does not make much sense to u?? If I were the director of a company and foresee a huge investment for MS OS, I would rather switch to Linux.

Sorry about the second link, I wanted to paste something else. I dont have that link anymore but it was about an ad by Dell. The Dell desktop is selling around 300$ with an XP Home edition. If one wants to upgrade OS to Win XP Pro, he/she has to shell out extra $100 bucks :O. Thats expensive.

well..what wud stop those restricted downloads from being pirated? i bet u can get them all in a CD at Parklane the day after they release them!

switching from MS OS to one as drastically different as Linux is not easy. the majority of the users in the world make use of some form of MS OS and the corporates cannot cater only to the small percent of Linux users (someone said 2%). its a 'Catch22' situation here.

it'll take years before the percent of MS OS users gets lowered even to 50%. that requires a majority of the computer users in the world to shun MS OS.

First of all, there is no Red Hat anymore. It is now Fedora Core.

Secondly, a programmer should have a licensed copy of every development software he is using or else he'll get nailed by the NASSCOM. If he is a .NET developer, he should be having licensed copies of .NET and the Windows operating system, so he won't have to migrate to any other operating system.

Thirdly, Fedora Core may be a good alternative to those who want to try a new operating system, but there are many Debian based distros like UbuntuLinux that are way better. The only reason Red Hat/Fedora Core is popular is because it is a US based distribution and it comes with all the fanfare.

It is still Red Hat, buddy. Fedora Core is just a community-based branch of what was previously known as Red Hat (Free version, not enterprise linux).

Red Hat still owns the copyright to the words Fedora Core and the fedora logo.

Personally, I find Fedora much suited for beginners. It avoids the Windows-like look of Mandrake and SuSE and also avoids the geekiness of Debian and Gentoo.

Well, it could be because Mandrake/SuSE are too much like Windows and come with customizations of standard software (like GNU coreutils etc) and Gentoo is a PITA for starters and Debian is always a couple of versions behind current release of individual software.
If the doors of perception were cleansed, everything would appear to man as it is - infinite.

Red Hat Linux was offically terminated last April. They do legacy updates, but the real official version of it is Fedora Core. I never said Red Hat closed down :D

You probably haven't tried Ubuntu yet. 100% pure Debian requires you to know a lot in order to do a basic install. But I was talking about Debian derivatives; their interfaces are so simple that anyone can install the OS and any application.

firelight will kick your ãss for this :P

Unfortunately yes, for the mission critical applications, but thats what gives it the most stability. You also have .debs for daily use applications and those are generally the latest ones. If you want THE LATEST, Gentoo is the one for you; it will either make or break your system. :P
