Mobile Devices

Lets keep this thread exclusively for mobile devices including but not limited to:

Mobile Phone
Smartphone
iPod
PDA
Blackberry
Palmtop
{do they exist anymore?}

Please post your experiences on mobile devices.

To begin with, I just got this Nokia 6620 smartphone and as you know, a smartphone is a something like a cross between a cell phone and a mini-computer (in lay terms). It runs on Symbian OS. You can install and uninstall applications on it just like you do on a computer. Nokia 6620 and 6600 use the Series 60.

Most Sony Ericsson cell phones and Nokia smartphones run on Symbian OS.

I don't have any MP3 player but I've used an iPod only once, and that was to connect my notebook to it to transfer some songs.

Does anyone have AudioVox? It is supposed to be the lightest smartphone and has Windows 2003 as its default operating system.

I read the reviews on mobiledia and P910 is way ahead of P800 in terms of everything, from resolution to everything else. Are you planning to buy any of these?

Forget about the P800. Its too old. 9000 rupees is a little on the high side for a P800.

Go for a P910 if you want to stick with Sony Ericsson.

I find the Motorola Mpx a pretty cool idea though :)
Things are supposed to happen the way they happen. And the reason they happen the way the happen is because you try to make them happen in a certain way and may or may not be succesful.

Nokia 6610 is under $150 for a first hand phone. It supports most of what you wanted including FM Radio but has no MP3 player.

Actually it is Bluetooth VS Infrared.

Bluetooth is kicking out Infrared; infrared is passe now.

GPRS refers to data communication using a mobile device. In short, WAP falls under GPRS. You can also use your mobile phone as a wireless modem if your phone provider supports GPRS, and connect your computer to the Internet using your phone.

EDGE is a new technology, an advanced form of GSM that gives you high speed data access. Nokia Series 60 phones have EDGE, which means I can watch live TV on my phone.

With WAP on your phone, you can view webpages over the Internet on your phone provided the webpages are coded in WML or XHTML.

seriously guys..before putting big bucks on cell phones think what features wud u use over a long term? do u seriously want to spend time watching soaps, browsing internet, sharing files etc thru out the day when u have access to PCs n TVs at home and work?

after an initial burst of enthusiasm to try out the new features, your expensive instrument wud be used just like a cheap Nokia 3310: for making/receiving calls and SMS.

IMO, the only extra feature that u might use now and then is the camera and u get good camera phones very cheap these days (this wud also support MMS that wud enable u to view the latest video of prominent actors ;). )
wtf? i no longer care if my posts hurt yr feelings

Agree!

Get something cheap and durable, with such boring games that kids do not want to touch it, otherwise they are nowadays after mobile phones. I personally would only use the phone as a communication device (Phone calls and SMS), and just maybe tranfer a photo/video.

I am currently working in the wireless telecom industry and would like to share my knowledge here if u want to buy phones...

Reg tecnologies...

If you are planning to buy a PDA or a mobile phone which is a a bit unwieldy (O2 XDA II types), I suggest u buy a phone which supports both Bluetooth Headset n handsfree profiles...If that is the case u need not have to take out ur phone every now n then to aswer calls or to dial the numbers..everything can be done thru the bluetooth headset...the headset range will b abt 10m which will add to ur convinience

AFA IR is concerned..it is extremely useful for data transfers...ringtones.wallpapers etc...

With an eye on the future u shud prefer a 3G enabled phone preferably running the Symbian OS(my favorite)...Countries like Japan have embraced 3G but most others are languishing in 2g n 2.5G -- 3G may not b far off though but the costs may still b prohibitive :(.

Phone Camera resolutions r increasing by the day...so choose the one suitable for you...1.5 mega pixel shud b fine for phones for me.

Phones coming with a built in MP3 player n FM radio r becoming common but keep an eye on the memory n check if the phone supports USB 2.0.

Now, a point to ponder...if u want so many things on a mbile phone it wud b better to hav a PDA or a pocket PC...as i said take a look at O2 XDA...I used it feels great...

More later bubye

I second you CAD....... Mostly ppl down here get these phones for no cost when they sign up a 2 yr contract with the service provider. Initially its outta passion they buy it, I never have seen a person use the camera leave alone the bluetooth. Now in major cities its a rule that you dont talk on the cell fones while you drive. so bluetooth is of some use for the wireless headset. I hold a Nokia 3100 which looks more a toy cell piece more over a cell fone. No regrets thou.

Technically I got both my mobile phones for free, after mail-in rebates. Thats how it works in the US. Nobody buys phones here, we get it free. In fact I got my Sony Ericsson T610 for free plus an extra $50 in the bargain. My roomie who had got it earlier, got an extra $250. He paid $100 for it, and later got a cheque for $350.

Anyway cost aside, there are many people who use WAP, including me, and a couple of days without WAP technically disabled me. Right now, I'm on Cingular and their WAP charges are very expensive, so I'm learning to live without WAP (until I find a hack to get around, like how I did with T-Mobile earlier).

FM Radio and MP3 player may be okay, but with the 4 hour talk time, I don't think it makes sense to use up the battery. You might as well get an iPod or MP3 player. As far as the inbuilt digital and video cameras are concerned, they are handy all the time, especially in emergencies. Of course, if you want high resolution photos/videos, you can always buy a good camera.

Coming to the Point,I am in a Dilemma abt Camera & Bluetooth.Forget the Others.I Ain't Getting a Decent Enuff Bluetooth+Camera Model For Sub 10k.

Only One I Saw is the SE T610 which is an OLD Model.Other than that all Bluetooth+Cam Phones are Above 10K with 6600 Being the BEst Option at 11.8K :(

You'll find Bluetooth to be a great feature, especially if you need to frequently transfer data between your phone and computer or other phones. When I met Kiran in Chicago after a long gap, we exchanged our business cards (that included phone numbers, email addresses, URLs) through Bluetooth. We were too lazy to create fresh contacts on our phone. Just do a Bluetooth "send".

Get a phone with a replaceable MMC card so that you can always have more memory later on.

Buy the Nokia 6600. With the 6600, you can install and uninstall applications. You are not restricted to using the software that comes with the phone.

Sony Ericsson T610 has a 2MB card and thats not enough for anything.
