Hi CAD,

The concert went really well, except for a hiccup at the end. At about 10:20 PM, the power failed, and there was some problem with the generator, and it took almost 30 mins to resolve. The tempo was lost, and when Khansaab resumed, he too looked troubled. He concluded with "Hungama hai kyon barpa"...

Hey, they did have liquor, but it was not free!

Any one else attended???

I attended the concert, it was awesome, to say the least.

Of course, me being one of the garib log, we bought the minimum cost tickets, i.e. Rs.500/- and sat at one of the back rows. I was on phone on friday, trying to get those tickets booked from planet M(as Rs 500/- ka tickets were getting over very soon) and by the number of calls I made to them for keeping the ticket booked, I am sure they will now rememeber my name and phone number for a few more days at least

But it was all worth it!!!!

To quote the generation -X's favourite adjective, he simply rocked! :D

Now, I can die happy..... :)

P.S. the sound system conking off, people sauntering in half an hour late (sorry, but hydies never learn, they do it for movies, they did it yesterday too), ringing off cell phones even after being requested to keep them switched off (at least people could keep them in tehir silent/viration mode), and people talking loudly on these phones were really really irritating. I was surprised that people take the trouble and spend the money to come to a concert like this and then either come in late, or keep moving throughout the hall or talk on their phones....disgusting.

No wonder Ghulam Aliji mentioned ,'The concert was supposed to start at 7, I started singing at 7, at that there were some people here, I thank them for being there then...now there are some more people, I thank you too...' (a polite rebuff, dunno how many latecomers understood)

Hey Betty Ji,

I fully understand your frustration! I was among the crowd who was in the hall at 6:50 PM, and when Khansaab started at 7:10, I was like in 7th Heaven! But those guys coming in late, they spoiled the first 40 mins for me. I was sitting in the 1500 Rs. 2nd row, and these bigshots (or so they thought of themselves) went trampling over my feet every min...

Khansaab started with a thumri... Gori tore naina, kajar bin kaale... in Rag pilu.

He then went on to sing a ghazal penned by the immortal "Ghalib" :

Harek baat pe kehte ho tum ke tu kya hai...

Ghalib wallows in self-pity in this ghazal, ending with:

bane hai shah ka musahib, phire hai itarata

wagarna shahar mein "Ghalib" ki aabru kya hai

Khan saab then went on with gahzals penned by Mohsin Naqvi (abr barsa, na hava tez chali hai, abke), Qateel Shifai (meri nazar se na ho door ek pal ke liye), Amjad Islam Amjad (Bheed mein ek ajnabi ka saamna achcha laga), and Mohsin Naqvi again (jabse usne shahar ko choda, har rasta sunsaan hua).

A break was announced at 8:50 pm, till 9:10 pm.

On resumption of the concert, Khansaab continued with Ahmed Faraz (teri baatein hi sunane aaye, dost bhi dil hi dukhane aaye), Qateel Shifai (jab tasavvur mera chupke se tujhe choo aaye) and Ibn-e-Insha (yeh baatein jhooti baatein hai).

A Punjabi Heer followed these ghazals, to lend a soothing touch.

After that, Khansaab recited the famous Naseer Qazmi ghazal - Dil mein ek lahar si uthi hai abhi... He excelled himself in rendering the "leher" in innumerable ways, and towards the end of this ghazal, the listners were totally enthralled. I suppose, the generator and electricity maintenenace guys were also totally lost in the ghazal, and they did not notice the periodic dimming of the lights during this ghazal. Towards the end, the lights totally gave away, and the show came to an abrupt halt. This was at about 10:20 PM

From here, the evening went haywire... people walked out, there was a mad rush to meet Khansaab and get autographs etc. After waiting on the stage for about 15 mins, Khansaab went backstage. When the power came back finally at around 10:50, he was clearly pissed off! He then went on to hurriedly sing "Chupke Chupke" (Akbar Ilahabadi), and "Khushboo Jaise log mile" (Gulzaar), and "Hungama kyon hai barpa".

He concluded the show with another thumri, sung by his guru and the legend, Usataad bade Ghulam Ali Khan", Aaye na baalam...

The evening was great and the concert was an excellent thing to remember for a long time.

Hey GAKP, that was a very good description of the concert.

Any idea if the organizers are planning to bring out a CD of the evening's songs? They were really rare ones, as he himself admitted...

Thanks for the comments!!! :D

I dont know whether they will come out with a CD, because except for 3 ghazals (which are new to me, and believe me, I have heard him for over 10 years now to know most of his ghazals), the rest are part of innumerable collections.

you can still check with http://www.ninaadmusic.com/ for details.
