QWERTY is what we use. You'll know that if you look at the row below the numbers row. The keys are laid out as :

QWERTY....

There are other keyboard layouts like DVORAK, etc. My uncle in Germany had a difficult time adjusting to our regular QWERTY keyboard because the locations of Z and Y are interchanged and a lot of the special characters are in different places.

I was always curious about DVORAK and I read that in the time your fingers type enough to move 1 mile on DVORAK keyboards, your fingers actually move more than 16 miles on QWERTY keyboards. In short, DVORAK keyboards are the best suited and most efficient for human typing.

You don't have to physically change your keyboard for using DVORAK. Just change the keyboard layout from QWERTY to DVORAK in the Control Panel if you are using Windows.

yes...if we change the control panel setting to DVORAK, wont the QWERTY layout of the keyboard be misleading?

You can use the same keyboard when you switch to DVORAK.

QWERTY is popular because it has become a standard over the years. There are many who use DVORAK and they say that its more relaxing and less stressful. You can learn it over the weekend. Its very easy. And don't tell me you look at the keyboard when you type.

Even though my typing skills have improved a lot over the years, i still have to look at the key board most of the time

i rarely look at the keyboard while typing but most users are tuned to the QWERTY format...its not really ergonomic to adopt a DVORAK format without changing the key layout. maybe we can rearrange the keys on the keyboard.

Great threads and great posts! :)

Me used dvorak for 3 months, but left it as it was too much hard work. 100% people qwerty in here, and if someo9ne was to learn dvorak, then he will have to go through a lot of trouble needlesly.

DVORAK is supposedly more ergonomic than QWERTY. Its meant mainly for writers and people who type with one hand (like Salman Rushdie who can type 60 words a minute with his index finger on one hand). But there are many programmers who use DVORAK too.

How fast do you type CtrlAltDel?

Sharjeel, why did you find DVORAK difficult? Did it take too long to get used to the layout?

no. Actually i used to code at that time, so dint have much of a problem...

It was the constant changes, when i used to switch to a frends pc, and also the fact that i had to take out the keys of my keyboard and re-arrange them.

Well..I am not really sure about working on the DVORAK Keyboard, although I wouldnt mind trying.Cause it would take me a great deal of time to undo Qwerty and learn DVORAK..And undoing Qwerty typing doesnt come easily to me! :D
I THINK...THEREFORE I AM.

Changing over from QWERTY means unlearning and relearning - too much work. And I am not at a stage in my life when I have either the time or the inclination to do it.
