[Spoiler] Sarkar Movie Review

by ycr007 » Wed Jul 06, 2005 7:37 pm

After a Long Gap of More than a Fortnight,I Got the chance to Watch a Movie in the Theatre and I Hauled Myself off to Sarkar.

Sarkar is a Move which Closely falls into the Reality Genre which Follows the Life of a Person Who,with his penchant to help the needy in whatever way he deems fit ,gains Cult status of that of a Sarkar i.e a Parallel Government. The Protagonist resembles very closely with a Powerful yet Subtle Real-Life character and the movie,as a whole is very much Inspired from "The Godfather",which Varma acknowledges at the beginning itself.

Subhash Nagre is a Messiah of sorts for the people who come to him for help.In his View, there is nothing such as a Right or Wrong.Only Power. With a Motive of always helping the people who beseech him, even though by Some Questionable Means,he rises to a stature of a 'Sarkar' for the people. With a CM at his Beck and Call and some very Loyal Henchmen,he Literally Rules, though not in an aesthetic Sense.

The beginning is sketchy with nothing being said of Amitabh's past or how he came into this position. His Elder son,Vishnu (Kay Kay Menon) has a Movie Business of his own and is the enfant terrrible.Shankar (Abhishek) is the US-Returned-With-a-bride-in-tow Younger son who has no knowhow of the Empire's Running altough he's a staunch Believer in his Father's Ideologies and actions. His Girlfriend Pooja (Kartina Kaif) is Very much in doubt of his Father's Image and Status and is Constantly Doubting his Motives.Son,to his credit, always stands wby his Father and Ultimately Says No to the Girl when she asks him whether He'll accompany her Back to the US.

Now Every Powerful Man has Enemies and here there are those people who are pissed off by Sarkar's Love for the People and not for Money.Four of them team up and hatch an elaborate Conspiracy to get rid of Sarkar.

Meanwhile, the Elder son takes a liking for a Young Starlet and in a Fit of Rage kills her Actor Boyfriend.Sarkar Supports the girl and Hauls Vishnu off the House. This acts as a catalyst for the Enemies' plans and Sarkar is arrested for the Alleged Murder of a Political Leader (Anupam Kher) Who Lambasts Sarkar as a 'Goonda' Just the Day before.

The latter half deals with how Sarkar's Younger Son,Shankar, Saves his Father from Behind Bars and also Manages to Stave off the Enemies.

Performance Wise, both the Bachchans have done a Stupendous Job.Amitabh in the Brooding & Rudraksha-Wielding Sarkar Looks absolutely at home and His Eyes Manage to Convey a Lot more than his Speech.Abhishek has delivered Restrained Performance which goes on to show that thie Guy is Maturing with each Movie.Heroines have no Scope at all and Katrina,Tanishaa (Kajol's Sister) & Ratna Pathak-Shah have Little to do.The Abhishek-Tanishaa-Katrina Portion Reminds one of the Anil Kapoor-Tabu-Pooja Batra Triangle in Viraasat.Kay Kay Menon is Okay.

As in most RGV Movies, the Villains are Shown as Brooding & Suave Guys and Not as Jokers Mouthing Gross Dialogues.Jeeva though as the 'Swamiji' is too Overboard-Not the Actor but the Character.

Music is Strictly Confined to the background Score, which is Very Intense and Suits the Movie.Amar Mohile has Done a Good Job and the 'Govinda Govinda' track stays with you Long after you've returned from the theatre.

Though a Typical RGV Flick,it does have its share of flaws. The Resemblances,to a Real-Life Character,to Godfather,to a Real-Life Swamiji is a tad too much to be swallowed. Also One of the Biggest Drawbacks is the Lack of Clarity on The Origin & Rise of Subhash Nagre to 'Sarkar'.Though it can't be Categorized as an Underworld Movie,it sure has its share of Violence though not as Much as Varma's Previous Flicks. It also lacks the Hard-Hitting Varma Punch. For No Reason whatsoever,I Felt a Distinct Lack of That Extra Spark Whenever the Two Bachchans shared the Screen.
