Strong statement eh? I can feel that a lot of people may counter me on this one. But then again, the very fact that you take the trouble to access a Hyderabad specific site make me believe that you will agree with the above title.
I know. For twenty-three years I have lived in and loved Hyderabad. I learnt all that I know here, I have discovered things here and (I hope!) have evolved into a better person in this city of the nawabs.
Today, when I find myself in an alien city, where I have come in search of a livelihood, I realize that I truly miss Hyderabad. Charminar, the laid-back attitude, delectable Biriyani with spicy sherwa, the Sunday market, the language, the people and the very attitude of the city are all dear to me. In fact, there are so many things that come to my mind, that I can scarcely list them all. But the one thing I miss the most is the presence of the Irani café. I can hardly remember the passing of time as I sat in cosy nooks, sipping chai, debating topical and historical issues with friends. In fact, we discussed a range of topics. From films to fun, friends to foes, loves and hatreds, ideals to ethics, nothing was left lying un-debated. In short everything under the sun was grist for our mill. This is what I miss most of all.
Today those friends are scattered all over India and the world. We still keep in touch, but our discussions have lost their zest and appeal. It is teh age of e-mail and chat. The zest of heated, face-to-face debates is lost, I fear, forever. However, there is no use in ignoring technology and teh conveniences that it offers. In getting back to this discussion board, I hope I can again get hold of such friends. It would be a pleasure to pit mind and wit and to discuss topics. I hope at least a few of you agree. I look forward to hearing from you all.

I can understand how you feel. I am hardly 750 kms from Hyderabad and still miss this place. You are thousands of miles away. For the first one month, I was sort of glad that I got away from familiar surroundings. I feel that familiar surroundings make one sort of complacent. Which is why I got away. But soon, I began missing all the things I once knew. A stranger on the road reminds me of a familiar face. Places get me into a nostalgic mood. When I happen to hear two people talking in Hindi (the essentially Hyderabadi kind) I find myself drawn to them. Hearing people converse in Telugu gives me a good feeling.
Even the other day, I was drawn to a kabab stall. As I walked in, I heard the owner talking in Hyderabadi. I could not contain my excitement. I walked up to him and introduced myself. He too was thrilled. He held my hand and drew me towards a table. He then ordered the best dishes in the hotel and seated himself with me to chat. We talked for close to an hour and at the end of it, bot of us had tears in our eyes from reminiscing about Hyderabad. It was an ordeal to get him to accept payment for the food. But in the end, he insisted that I take the cool drink free!
I wish this sort of behavior would manifest itself even in Hyderabad. I sometimes feel that the people there are cold to others. It is only when they come out of the city that they thaw and exude warmth. What do you have to say? Do you happen to meet any Hyderabadis in the US, wherever you stay that is? How do they react to meeting another Hyderabadi? Do let me know as I would like to compile all these anecdotes. Who knows! With some help, I might soon have a quintessential Hyderabadi site!

Prakup, some of us are interested in carrying on many of the discussions you have started on these boards. I hope you have not left these boards forever as you said you would in another posting of yours. Persons of the Hyderabadi diaspora like myself are discovering new and exciting ways of keeping in touch with our hometown happenings through websites like this one, and frankly this site is fortunate to have genuine guys like you post your opinions. Most such sites suck due to lack of solid content, but this site is pretty good and ur postings definitely make it even more fascinating.

When I came to this city from a seashore town a few yrs back, I was severly disappointed. It made me uneasy - everything - the dusty pawn strewn gallis, Hyderabadi hindi, the hot dry days, suffocating look in old city, the crazy traffic jams (every city has them though, but the ones at Hyd have their own (c)harm...

Now things are different. Not becoz perception/attitude/lifestyle changed. But b\'coz I know it better now - this came with what I call the camaraderie that comes into play as two people get to know each other with an open mind.

I like it - the dusty koti lanes, the drone in Charminar, the glitter on necklace road, the casual hyderabadi and his Hiludu (Hindi+Telugu+Urdu) conversations..and many more. Its no longer hot and dry. As for the weather:its less hot, more rainy and a lot perfect!

Hum bhi shayad Hyderabadi bangaye asayich ;)

Left Hyderabad in \'78 but still miss the evening walks to the hotels, paan shops and movies. The biggest lesson I learned ther:respect, trust and tolerate people. Wishing for peace and justice in the world.

Hyderabad,The Paradise. I absolutly agree with you. It\'s the place from where i saw the life for the first time, received my education, learned the culture.. etc.
I left Hyd around 6 years ago , but still i have the sweet memories of spending time with good old friends in Iraini hotel(1/2 chai), evenings walks(university,Tankbund, neckless road parks, Birla mandir ..etc) , going to movies etc...Whenever i recollet those memories, i feel so emotional. Whenever i visit Hyd(my city) i feel sooo happy(which cannot be expressed) and relaxed and feel like am actually at home.

Keep it up.This site needs more guys like you to keep it lively ,constructive and less controversial.

Prakup,

Very elegantly written...You have brought back so many of my \'invaluable\' memories in Hyd. I live in US and there are thousands of Hyderabadis living here. Where I live, most of the telugu/Urdu speaking folks are from Hyd (I would say 50% are from this fabulous city). Here we get together and talk about the same things you mentioned; ofcourse nothing can beat the physical presence of being there....and as usual there are some rotten apples too...some folks just don\'t get along and don\'t want to have an conversation; infact they bad mouth the city. Overall, I have to say we get together pretty well. We form our own circles and try to meet regularly; watch films, talk about all the things happenings on the other side of the ocean, etc, etc....but there is a certain \'itch\' that always remains to be scratched... What say????

well said

by hiitesh » Wed Jun 29, 2005 11:19 pm

very well said and carried this topic prak up and others as well ,

hyderabad what to say about our place , the time we actually knew hyderabad was gandipet , tank bund , banjara hills , marredpally , birla mandir and theatres also juke box used to rock when it opened but soon shutted down ,

necklace road has just come up few years back , though still has its own beauty ,

nerver there were saturday night dosco's and then country club was rocking when it opened and then treasure island soon followed and still rocking i guess ,

those days i remember we used to wait for weekends to catch up saturday night movies , to theatre's like maheshwari , santosh , sangeet etc , depending on the area's go to the best pan shop to meet some freinds and then talk for a while and home ,

sunday wake up araam sey then meet up in a friends place from there start loafing arround to khojya gali and then sindhi colony etc , evening end up in a restaurant with some beers and thats it .

sometimes late dinners in paradise etc with ecellent chai ,

and now things have changed so much , ofcourse its a good sign but that lifestyle our actual hyderabad i dont think will be anymore son down the road .

hiitesh from panama : you can get in touch with me @ hiitesh@gmail.com , i did meet couple of them from hyderabad over here but they are very cold not like all of us over here expressing our actual feelings towards our home town
