TJS George :It must be hell to be a celebrity. A certain inner worth is needed to cope with the status. An untutored mind will simply go bonkers. Otherwise, why should Michael Jackson live such a despicable life? Why should Pataudi get into such a stupid mess?
Jackson became a star in his childhood. With neither a proper education nor any kind of family guidance, his mind got bloated and he became a victim of fantasies. He underwent numerous plastic surgeries. In the end, he stopped looking like the Black he was, and became an imitation white man. And his hobby? Sleeping in coffins.
To his more earthly hobby, the court has now given a judicious gloss. But public perception of the fellow as a reckless abuser is unlikely to disappear. He has ceased to be the role model he once was. Screaming fans will of course continue to scream, pop culture being what it is. But the sheer fact that he has run up a debt of $270 million is a commentary on the dissipation he calls life. This is one "Thriller" that has gone really "Bad."
Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi is of noble lineage, aristocratic, a picture of sophistication. Perhaps THAT is his problem. Indian royalty has this perverse notion that killing is fun. The Maharaja of Sarguja (ever heard of such a place?) killed and skinned 3000 tigers in his lifetime.
How did killing became a sport? The King of Sport at that. When Roman emperors fed prisoners to hungry lions, they had at least a reason: punishing prisoners. When an unemployed Nawab or a Filmic Khan kills a harmless black buck, what reason can there possibly be? And how on earth can it be fun?
Powerful lobbies are at work in countries like the US promoting guns and blood sport. Their media carry advertisements like "Hunt big bull, elk and bison in private Idaho wilderness." In Canada a major industry flourishes by bludgeoning to death seal pups on the snow.
The unspeakable cruelty of this slaughter provoked massive protest movements against seal hunting. Even more intense is the movement against bull-fighting, perhaps the cruellest spectator sport invented by man. The bull really has no chance. If it hits a matador, there will be picadors and other helpers to divert the bull and save the man. They gang up to tire the bull, piercing it with their darts all the while and bleeding it.
That's the formal bullfight in a sports arena. There's another variation where the bull is made to walk and run through village streets for hours on end. All the time people keep plunging those arrow-darts into its body. When the animal is too weak to run from loss of blood, the villagers catch it and cut off its testicles while it is still alive. When it is finally dead, they all devour beef steaks made of its flesh.
The movement against this cruelty has made Barcelona city vote in favour of a ban. In Cuba Fidel Castro imposed a ban in 2000. But strangely the "sport" is spreading in China.
When macho filmstars started taking it out on defenceless creatures of the wild, Pataudi could have started a campaign against hunting. Instead, he went into hiding, making it hard even for his friends to defend him. This is what the wise had in mind when they said: "The ultimate result of shielding men from the effects of folly is to fill the world with fools.
