Father's Day : A Celebration In Honor of All Fathers

* Father's Day is a day of commemoration and celebration of Dad / Dada / Pita / Naanna / Pituhu / Appa. It is a day to not only honor your father, but all men who have acted as a father figure in your life - whether as Stepfathers, Uncles, Grandfathers, or "Big Brothers."

** Father's Day is celebrated in the US on Sunday, June 19, 2005.

The Story of Father's Day

Father's Day, contrary to popular misconception, was not established as a holiday in order to help greeting card manufacturers sell more cards. In fact when a "father's day" was first proposed there were no Father's Day cards!

Mrs. John B. Dodd, of Washington, first proposed the idea of a "father's day" in 1909. Mrs. Dodd wanted a special day to honor her father, William Smart. William Smart, a Civil War veteran, was widowed when his wife (Mrs. Dodd's mother) died in childbirth with their sixth child. Mr. Smart was left to raise the newborn and his other five children by himself on a rural farm in eastern Washington state. It was after Mrs. Dodd became an adult that she realized the strength and selflessness her father had shown in raising his children as a single parent.

The first Father's Day was observed on June 19, 1910 in Spokane Washington. At about the same time in various towns and cities across American other people were beginning to celebrate a "father's day." In 1924 President Calvin Coolidge supported the idea of a national Father's Day. Finally in 1966 President Lyndon Johnson signed a presidential proclamation declaring the 3rd Sunday of June as Father's Day.

***** Father's Day Quotes
# Children teach us a lesson adults should learn: to not be ashamed of failing, but to get up and try again. Most of us adults are so afraid, so cautious, so “safe” and therefore so shrinking and rigid and afraid. That it is why so many of us have resigned ourselves to failure. - Malcolm X

# If we are to reach real peace in the world…we shall have to begin with the children…and not by passing fruitless, idealistic resolutions, but by going from love to love and peace to peace, until at last all the corners of the world are covered with that peace and love for which the whole world hungers. - Mohandas K. Gandhi

How can you be so sure?
Things are supposed to happen the way they happen. And the reason they happen the way the happen is because you try to make them happen in a certain way and may or may not be succesful.

No. of possibilities : 1)Commitment at work

2)Never find a girl

3)If I do find one, she is impotent

4)I have a freak accident and become impotent

5)I die

6)She dies

see, in the span of less than 2 minutes i came up with six possibilities, if my senior crack squad here (read mark, AR etc) think, i think they will come up with a no of more reasons

Anyway, Happy Fathers' Day to all the fathers everywhere in the world. :D

Prayer To The Father

by HH » Sat Jun 18, 2005 10:54 am

Re : Father's Day : A Celebration In Honor of All Fathers

Prayer To The Father

Where the mind is without fear and the head is held high;

Where knowledge is free;

Where the world has not been broken up into fragments by narrow domestic walls;

Where words come out from the depth of truth;

Where tireless striving stretches its arms towards perfection;

Where the clear stream of reason has not lost its way into the dreary desert sand of dead habit;

Where the mind is led forward by thee into ever-widening thought and action---

Into that heaven of freedom, my Father, let my country awake.

-Gitanjali of RABINDRANATH TAGORE

Of Gitanjali of RABINDRANATH TAGORE

A few days ago I said to a distinguished Bengali doctor of medicine, `I know no German, yet if a translation of a German poet had moved me, I would go to the British Museum and find books in English that would tell me something of his life, and of the history of his thought. But though these prose translations from Rabindranath Tagore have stirred my blood as nothing has for years, I shall not know anything of his life, and of the movements of thought that have made them possible, if some Indian traveller will not tell me.' It seemed to him natural that I should be moved, for he said, `I read Rabindranath every day, to read one line of his is to forget all the troubles of the world.'

- W. B. YEATS

***** Father's Day THOUGHTS
# Fathers. They are the strongholds of our families. Boys want to be like them, girls idolize them. He is the first guy they say I love you too, and the last one they say good-bye to on their wedding days. They play such a big part in our lives. Often being the staunch disciplinarian to mom’s quiet love.
As this fathers day approaches, I am conflicted. I never knew my father. He divorced my mom before I was born. He gave up his parental rights and I was adopted by my step-dad when I was 2 years old. My step-dad took care of us and I admire him for taking my brothers and me under his wing ...
This fathers day I will think of my father, but more importantly I will thank God for my (step-)dad. He stepped up and took care of us. I now know that fathers come in all shapes and sizes. Some are there all the time, some just come to visit. Some we know well, others we wish we could have known better. For father’s day, sit back and think of your dad wherever he may be. Thank him for being there and know that deep down inside lies the heart of a saint, even if he doesn’t show it.

Ever Enriched Those Around ...
Ever Remember The Noble Soul ...
Ever Cherish The Noble Life!

-Gitanjali of RABINDRANATH TAGORE

Of 'Gitanjali' RABINDRANATH TAGORE

`Every morning at three---I know, for I have seen it'---one said to me, `he sits immovable in contemplation, and for two hours does not awake from his reverie upon the nature of God. His father, the Maha Rishi, would sometimes sit there all through the next day; once, upon a river, he fell into contemplation because of the beauty of the landscape, and the rowers waited for eight hours before they could continue their journey.' He then told me of Mr. Tagore's family and how for generations great men have come out of its cradles. `Today,' he said, `there are Gogonendranath and Abanindranath Tagore, who are artists; and Dwijendranath, Rabindranath's brother, who is a great philosopher. The squirrels come from the boughs and climb on to his knees and the birds alight upon his hands.'
- W. B. YEATS

***** Father's Day THOUGHTS
# What Makes A Dad

God took the strength of a mountain,
The majesty of a tree,
The warmth of a summer sun,
The calm of a quiet sea,
The generous soul of nature,
The comforting arm of night,
The wisdom of the ages,
The power of the eagle's flight,
The joy of a morning in spring,
The faith of a mustard seed,
The patience of eternity,
The depth of a family need,
Then God combined these qualities,
When there was nothing more to add,
He knew His masterpiece was complete,
And so, He called it ... Dad
