NIRA / NEERA : Nutritive ...
PALMYRA TREES in Chennai have started dripping "nectar"; and every morning (between 11.30 a.m. and noon) thousands of litres of palm juice (Neera in Hindi and Padhaneer in Tamil) come in barrels to the Egmore godown of the Tamil Nadu Palmgur and Fiber Marketing Cooperative Federation (TNPFMCF).
Earlier in the day, the palm juice is collected in pots (daubed with lime on the inside) from Palmyra trees at the IIT campus (in Guindy), Madhavaram and Kadappakam. There are about 5000 palm trees at the IIT campus, and 1500 of them are being tapped; out of the 8000 palm trees in the land belonging to Madhavaram Milk Society (in Madhavaram), a thousand are being tapped; and about 2500 palm trees spread across six villages in Kadapakkam are being tapped.
Tappers are on the job as early as 4.30 a.m. in Madhavaram (as there are no thickets there); they shin up the palm trees at the IIT campus only at 6.30 a.m., because of the forbidding thickets there; good visibility is required if one is to avoid bruises. Altogether 1500 litres of Neera (collected from the afore-mentioned areas) pour into TNPFMCF's godown on Ganga Reddy Road (in Egmore) every day for storage, packaging and marketing.
After arrival at the godown, the Neera is divested of foreign particles and sediments through filtration and are stored in water coolers. That very evening the palm juice is packed in pouches for delivery early next morning. The pouches (stored in insulated boxes) are transported to Sarvodaya Sangams and Khadhi Bhavans and shops (and agents) in places (even) as far away as Tambaram and Thiruvatriyur.
"With the increase in arrivals (of palm juice), we will be extending distribution to other places such as Ambattur and Poonamalee," says G. Kumaran, special officer, TNPFMCF.
Neera in a 220 ml pouch, which costs Rs. 3.50, is sold to the Sarvodaya Sangams and Khadi Bhavans for Rs. 2.75. To dealers who go for 500 to 1000 pouches, the pricing is pegged at Rs. 2.50 per pouch; and those who go for over 1000 pouches, buy them at Rs. 2.25 per pouch. Purchases less than 500 pouches come at Rs. 3.00 per pouch. (Those interested in taking up dealership with TNPFMCF, may call 28192744 for more details).
"The Neera season begins in January when the Palmyra trees start to bud. In this period juice is obtained only from the male palm trees. The female palm trees start giving off sap in the last week of March or the first week of April. At this time output from the male palms is on the downturn; it keeps tapering off till the end of April. Then the female palms alone give off sap -- till the end of the Neera season which generally falls in the first half of June. Last year, the season lasted till June 15," says A. Annamalai, supervisor-in-charge, TNPFMCF.
* Despite research conclusively proving that Neera is nutritive and is a body coolant, the drink falls short of widespread acceptance, due to a few reasons.
"There are people who avoid it like a plague because they labour under the illusion that it is a form of toddy (or kallu)," says Annamalai. Though Neera and toddy have similar beginnings, as end products they are as different as can be (both in content and effect). Toddy is obtained by exposing the palm sap to a chemical breakdown by micro-organisms. In other words, it is allowed to ferment over a day or two. Since Neera is collected in a pot daubed on the inside with lime (and also collected immediately after the palm gives off sap), the process of fermentation is non-existent.
Another reason adduced for Neera's unpopularity is the "unpleasant smell" it supposedly exudes. Though it (the smell) is not really nauseating, there are people who do not seem to be comfortable with it.
# Shop owners are reluctant to stock Neera because the drink turns sour after 24 hours (the countdown begins when the TNPFMCF delivers the cartons at the shop or the dealer's unit).
# There is, however, hope on "the preservative front". Sanjay Nane, a scientist with the National Chemical Laboratory, Pune, has devised a way to preserve Neera for six months in a bottle. He has achieved this through the membrane filter method, and, importantly, without the use of chemical additives. This preservation method does not drain away vitamins and minerals. He demonstrated his method here in Chennai in December, 2002. The `sample' Neera bottle is at the TNPFMCF office, free from rot (mind you, it is already more than three months since it was sealed). "Neera in bottles" is expected to be marketed next year. For people who know the value of Neera, this must indeed be glad tidings.

I know three things abt neera:
1.)It comes from coconuts or something related
2.)Tastes great
3.)Can turn into Toddy

Things are supposed to happen the way they happen. And the reason they happen the way the happen is because you try to make them happen in a certain way and may or may not be succesful.
