Spanish GP 2005 Race and Track Conditions

by vivek » Fri May 06, 2005 9:33 pm

Catalunya circuit was a result of the world championship staging in Spain that started in the early 1950's. This was one of the 5 circuits in Spain to participate in this championship. This year would be Barcelona's 34th year staging in formula 1 history and has always provided a lot of excitement to formula 1. The spectator grandstands are strategically placed around the track in order to provide the spectators with maximum formula 1 action.

Catalunya Circuit, one of the most beautiful and technically challenging circuits in Formula 1 is situated 30kms to the north of Barcelona. The track used to have a wide layout with rough-asphalt layered surface with lot of greenery surrounding most parts of the track but has been modified heavily with a new overall smooth surface with many gravel traps around the medium-fast curves. It also has some uphill areas and is also bumpy at some places.

Damn!!! Forgot to post the Results.....

Tyre ruins Ferrari, Raikkonen wins Spanish GP

McLaren's Kimi Raikkonen ran away with the Spanish Grand Prix on Sunday to dash Formula One leader Fernando Alonso's hopes of celebrating a fourth win in a row before his home crowd. Alonso, the Renault driver who has set the championship alight and fired up a nation's dormant passion for Formula One, had to settle for a distant second place behind the Finnish 'Iceman'

'twas a very Xciting race I must say.I absolutely Loved it when I saw Schumi having a Bad-Tyre day and my delight was Doubled when Kimi took the Chequered Flag. Also the Renaults did very well and the Move by Fisichella over the last laps to pass Hiedfeld was awesome.....

Kimi Winsssssss`

by ycr007 » Sun May 22, 2005 11:37 pm

Raikkonen and McLaren do it again

Finn untouchable as Williams score best result of 2005

With a dominant victory in Monte Carlo to match the one he took in Spain a fortnight ago, Kimi Raikkonen has moved up to second place in the drivers’ championship. The sheer margin of the Finn’s superiority - leading from his P1 grid spot all the way to the flag - will have struck further fear into the rest of the paddock.

Raikkonen, who started from his third consecutive pole position, proved he is now the man in form as McLaren executed the perfect one-stop strategy to pile the pressure on early championship leaders Renault.

An early-race incident looked set to turn the race on its head but McLaren stuck with their plans as their rivals dived to the pits and Raikkonen was able to ease to victory with a comfortable gap.

Spaniard Fernando Alonso, the championship leader, struggled with his tyres and dropped from second to fourth late in the race when Williams drivers Nick Heidfeld and Mark Webber passed to climb onto the podium.

Now Thatz what we McLaren Fans were waiting to see!!! Kimi proved that Spain was, after all,no flash in the pan.Hope McLaren now go in one direction only-Up :P

Schumacher's Indian guru to quit

Michael Schumacher's Indian-born physiotherapist Balbir Singh, has decided to call it day after ten years looking after the seven times world champion.

Singh has been at the German's side for most of Schumacher's Formula One career, and has become more than just his physiotherapist. Over the years the Ferrari ace has lent on Singh for advice and as a confidant. He also keeps an eye on what the driver eats and calms him down when things do not go exactly to plan.

Dubbed 'wonder-guru' by Bild Schumacher said: "He has something in his hands that no-one else has."

But Singh revealed that he wanted to spend more time with his family and will step down at the end of the season.

"Balbir is one of the few men that I could and can trust 150 percent," Schumacher told Germany's Bild newspaper on Thursday.

"The split will hurt me. I will miss him. I must simply accept that he wants to build a new future," added Schumacher, 36, who insisted earlier this week that he was not thinking of quitting despite his poor start to the season.

The Ferrari driver's spokeswoman Sabine Kehm, said the two would remain close friends.

"He is one of the closest people to Michael," she said. "It's been 10 years now and at one point he just said I have to care about my family more."

I think the Stewards were a little too harsh on Montoya, they cud've just given him a drive-through rather than an exclusion. Wud've made it a McLaren 1,2.
Things are supposed to happen the way they happen. And the reason they happen the way the happen is because you try to make them happen in a certain way and may or may not be succesful.

Find the race and track analysis here

Image

This Track is known to be one of the oldest in racing history starting from 1909 where the first Indianapolis Indy racing began. It was modified many times there after to suit its kind of Indy racing, which saw high speed long straights and long turns with lot of banking, immediately followed by a intermediate long straight with concrete wall following right through the end of the straight. It has a very large seating capacity well over 265,000 who are visible all throughout the circuit. Almost all the track is surrounded by greenery with only a couple of gravel traps just along the sharp S corners. The first Formula 1 GP was held here in 1950. F1 then vanished from this track for 9 years from 1991, and came back again in 2000 when Michael Schumacher in his Ferrari won the GP. This year will be its 16th F1 hosting her in Indianapolis, United States.

This Just Goes to Show that Ferrari are Hell-Bent on Winning a Race No Matter What! They Just Don't Care for the Formula1 Fraternity nor the Fans nor the People who Run the Game. They Just want to Win at all costs. So When there was a Chance to Scoop Maximum Points, they aren't gonna let that Pass!! It has been a Moot point in F1 that Ferrari,as the Biggest Team Should have had a say in the Functioning and betterment of the game as a whole.Afterall,no one is above the Sport. But Ferrari's Hegemony and their Muscle-Flexing had had the game in Poor Light Many a Times.

When there was talk of Breakaway fom the Bernie Ecclestone Led Consortium, and all the other 9 teams Supported it,Ferrari were the one to go ahead and ink a Deal with him.Now when there was the Concern of Driver safety,Which Arguably Should be the Matter of Paramount importance for the Teams,Ferrari do nothing.

It May be argued that they had'nt had the Problem so why should they care? But Haven't they got any responsibility for the Game as Such? All right,Michelin had Blundered,So what. And By Having the chicane, there was nothing of a Disadvantage for the Bridgestone Runners.Pray,How can there be a Disadvantage when the Car will approach the Turn 13 at a Reduced Pace?

Even in the race, the manner in which Schumacher Just Swatted away Rubens at the End of the 2nd Pitstop,Reeked of arrogance and Unbridled Competetiveness.Agreed that Rubens had to Back off and there was no way MS whould have let go,Even if Rubens had Overtaken him,I think MS would'ave Just Bumped him off the Track.

I Had Never Imagined that I Would be Yawning So Often During an F1 Race!!! But Yesterday's race Proved that "the Most Exciting Sport" can be a Damp Squib,at times,as well.

ok ferrari is not my favourite teams ..its Mclaren, but still ferrari hasnt done anything wrong....

How can u say putting a chicane infront of the corner is fair ??? How can you expect the bridgestone teams to slow down just because the Michelin teams cant take that corner !!...

If they really think the tyres arent safe..then they should have just slowed down at that corner, its just rediculous to say "Oh my renault cant go that fast around that corner, so i want the ferrari to be slowed down"

the teams had a option of changing the tyres with a penalty....but they chose not to...its really their fault they are the ones that dissapointed all the fans

Yep,I agree that Michelin Made a Mistake with their tyres. But they tried with another Set of Tyres and they too were Not Satisfactory. We Can't accuse them of Not Trying. And are Ferrari the angels of F1? No Way!!!

And When 9 of the Teams had No Qualms of Putting a Chicane,Ferrari Objected to it. Okay, they Had'nt Had Problems So Why Should they?

But I think If Bridgestone Were To Say the Same thing,Then It Might have Been Okay. But For Ferrari To Categorically Refuse to Go hand-in-hand with the other 9 teams reeks of Arrogancy.I again Reiterate that the Sport's Bigger than any Individual or Team.

While I agree that The Blame for the Fiasco Lay at Michelin As Well as FIA's Door, atleast Ferrari Could have Made a Race Possible. But what we had instead was a Farce! When a Viewer Like me infront of the TV and Watching it Free of Cost Feel so Disgusted,I could Imagine how those Who have Shelled out anything Upwards of 100$ would have Felt.

But Instead of Prolonging the debate,I think the FIA Should Now Concentrate on not letting it happen again.I think there was Talk of Having a uniform Trye Supplier for next year.Remains to be seen whether it reapply works.

yes ferrari definetly are no angels !! i was disappointed by them few times ...

But in this case, as for my opinion i think what ferrari did was right. They tested the whole weekend with a partiicular tyre and changing a circuit would definetly disadvantage them....

and also even if they did accept for the change, i dont think the FIA would agree. Putting a chicane with out following any safety procedures could be a fatal accident waiting to happen..and there just wasnt any time to analyse all the issues !!!

so i still think the most logical thing to do was for the Michelin runners to slow down and take responsibility for Michelin's mistake.....so its clearly their fault for not putting up a show for the fans

then again its probably easy for every one to point fingers at one team rather than seven!!

yes i agreee with one tyre rule....they should bring back that rule

What exactly is a chicane?

Jordan and Minardi had agreed to go for the chicane...ferrari by not agreeing has dissappointed the F1 fans. it only shows that they were deperate for points.

ne way whats over is over...hope it doesnt happen again!

so whens the next GP?

A Chicane is a quick succession of opposite-direction turns, usually intended to reduce excessively high straightaway speeds. The Teams Running Michelin Tyres asked for a Chicane to be Built at the star of the Turn 13 which was the fastest part on the track.Since the Michelin Tyres had a Problem Negotiating that turn.

The Banking at Turn 13:

Turn 13 at Indianapolis is the only real banked turn in Formula One racing and proved Michelin's undoing. With an angle of up to nine degrees, it demands a left-right compromise on suspension set-up. The left tyres take the heaviest strain, particularly their shoulders, with tyre temperature increasing in this area as a result (red spot). If this temperature is too high for too long, wear rates rise dramatically and can lead to failure. The tendency for teams to run low tyre pressures, allowing them to use stiffer suspension settings, would only exacerbate the problem.
