Vegetarianism Helps Health & Wellbeing

Vegetarianism Helps Health & Wellbeing
*
Most vegetarians eat dairy products
# Vegetarianism improves personal health and safeguards the environment
# Medical research has shown that on average, a lifelong vegetarian visits the hospital 22% less often than an average meat-eater
# Vegetarians generally suffer less heart disease, hypertension, obesity, diabetes, various cancers, diverticular disease, bowel disorders, gallstones, kidney stones, and osteoporosis
# Vegetarian diets have also been used in the treatment of various illnesses, including rheumatoid arthritis and nephrotic syndrome.

**
A high consumption of fresh fruit and vegetables is a benefit of balanced vegetarian diets and research has demonstrated the importance of protective antioxidant nutrients in the diet found in fresh fruit and vegetables. These antioxidant nutrients include the beta-carotene form of vitamin A, C and E. Many researchers now believe that these nutrients play a major role in reducing the risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease and cancer.

***
"Every vitamin, mineral and nutrient your body needs is available in abundance on a balanced veggie diet," says Kate Fowler, from the vegetarian campaign group, Viva.

****
The British Medical Association agrees. It says:

# Vegetarians are no more likely to suffer from anaemia (iron deficiency) than meat eaters;

#A vegetarian diet meets all the nutritional needs of adolescents;

# Vegetarians have lower rates of obesity, coronary heart disease, high blood pressure, large bowel disorders, cancers and gallstones;

# Vegetarians often live longer and suffer less from chronic diseases

*****
Is it really for me?

As well as the health benefits, you may find you have extra energy, fewer illnesses, clearer skin and a clearer conscience.

Think About Your Brain March 19

Real, dead brains will be on display Saturday, March 19, at the Detroit Public Library as part of the WSU School of Medicine's Brain Awareness Day. Organized by graduate students in the Cellular and Clinical Neurobiology Program, the event is the culmination of a week of events in schools throughout metropolitan Detroit that teach children about the human brain and its function.

Brain Awareness Day is filled with hands-on activities and presentations, including topics such as the detrimental effects of drugs, diseases of the brain and careers in neuroscience. The event is one of the School's most popular.

"We spend our lives in the laboratories performing experiments to try to figure out how the brain functions and how diseases alter that function,"
said Mays Imad, one of the co-chairs of Brain Awareness Week. "It is refreshing for us to be able to take a step back and share our knowledge in another way by educating the community about the brain in a relaxed and fun atmosphere."

Brain Awareness Day ***** will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, March 19, in the Detroit Public Library, 5201 Woodward Ave.

Treat Your Windshield Right : Wet Weather Can Play Havoc

by HH » Thu Mar 10, 2005 1:01 pm

Treat Your Windshield Right

Wet Weather Can Play Havoc With Your Visibility When Driving

# There are several ways to improve visibility during rainy weather. The most obvious is to make certain you have new wiper blades and your wipers are working properly. Another step is to have a glass treatment applied to your windshield.
# A glass treatment applied to the windshield improves visual awareness nearly 34 percent over an untreated windshield. ... a driver's response time may be improved by as much as 25 percent with a treated windshield. This equates to a one second difference in response time. At 40 miles per hour, it represents 58 feet of travel.

# Remember that missing another car by a foot or less is often the difference between an injury accident and simply a scare.

# Among the brands of windshield treatments on the market PPG Industries Aquapel repels rain from auto glass, reduces glare especially in night driving conditions and makes it easier to remove ice, snow, dirt and bugs. PPG says it forms a chemical bond with the windshield's glass and lasts for up to six months. It is also used as an original-equipment application as part of Toyota's safety package on the Lexus RX330.

The Sights : Hindsight - Foresight - Insight

by HH » Sat Mar 12, 2005 10:09 pm

The Sights : Hindsight - Foresight - Insight

The Sights : Hindsight - Foresight - Insight

There once was a wise man in the village who was visited by a fellow who had questions he'd been pondering for quite some time.

The fellow said to the wise man, "I've been trying to figure out what's more important, Sir. The looking backwards that comes with hindsight, or the looking forward that comes with foresight? I have found that I'm able to learn lessons from past experiences by using hindsight, however, I'm also able to foresee future potential road blocks and pitfalls by using foresight."

The wise man sat patiently, listening intently to the fellow with his question. When the fellow was finished, the wise men reached over and handed him a straight board and then asked the fellow to bend the board. The fellow tried to bend the board, but it was too thick.

"The board is like the dilemma in your question…it's one board with two different ends," said the wise man.

"That's exactly it, so now what?" asked the fellow.

The wise man went on to explain that one needs a balancing point, a point where you can see both ends, or both points, simultaneously. "What you need, my fellow, is insight; which is vision in the moment, that's the transfer point between hindsight and foresight. Insight is neither hindsight or foresight, yet it is of both."

Even more confused, the fellow muttered, "I don't quite follow."

The wise man continued, "Have you ever seen a teeter-totter?"

"Yes I have," replied the fellow.

"Well," said the wise man, "The focal point, or in other words, the point of balance in the middle of the teeter-totter that makes the ride possible is like insight. That focal point makes it possible for hindsight and foresight to transfer their energy and wisdom between one another. This point is also the birthplace of the two endpoints because it is the only spot that isn't a part of the past or a part of the future. What you do at this point of insight becomes your past, and what you do here at this point of insight determines your future. So, my friend, you might say that the balance point is insight-and the board represents hindsight at one end and foresight at the other. Just as the balance point transforms a simple board into a fun ride as a teeter-totter; so does insight effect our lives when we use the balance point of insight." The wise man paused, allowing the fellow to absorb what he had said.

To paraphrase:
You see, insight operates in the moment, it's instantaneous-it's not of time-it's simply a marker between the past and the future; another way to explain it would be as a porthole between the past and future. Insight is a transformational point in which life happens when one is completely attentive to each moment, to the present, which is where we live our lives, moment by moment.

The problem we so often experience is that we give our attention to the past or the future, at the expense of attending the all-important present moment. We worry about our past or fret about our future and in that process we give up our opportunity to exercise any influence we have in our lives, which can only happen in the here and now.

Think Healthy, Act Healthy

by HH » Sun Mar 20, 2005 7:39 pm

Think Healthy, Act Healthy

Think Healthy, Act Healthy

Researchers from Harvard Medical School* say that a positive mental attitude toward getting older may help seniors maintain a healthy, active lifestyle.

To test this point, they assessed walking speed and "swing time," (the amount of time the leg is suspended in mid-stride, which is a measurement of balance) in a group of healthy men and women ranging in age from 60 to 90. The study participants were then exposed to words flashed on a computer screen, which appeared too quickly to be consciously read, but long enough for the words to register in the participants' subconscious memory. The scientists found that the people exposed to "positive" words, such as astute, wise, and accomplished, improved their walking speed and swing time in subsequent walking tests. People exposed to "negative" words, such as diseased, senile, and dependent, did not improve their walking times.

A slowed gait is often seen as an inevitable part of aging. In this study, however, reaction to positive and negative stereotypes, rather than age, seemed to make people more or less likely to walk "like an elderly person." If this is the case, say scientists, then maintaining a positive self-image may be a key part of staying healthier and more independent during aging.

* Hausdorff JM, Levy BR, Wei JY. "The power of ageism on physical function of older persons: reversibility of age-related gait changes." Journal of the American Geriatric Society, November 1999, Volume 47, pp 1346-1349.

Siwak: An Oral Health Device

by HH » Mon Mar 21, 2005 5:06 pm

Siwak: An Oral Health Device

Siwak: An Oral Health Device

A variety of oral hygiene measures have been used since the dawn of time. This has been verified by various excavations done all over the world, in which toothpicks, chewsticks, tree twigs, linen strips, birds' feathers, animal bones and porcupine quills were recovered 1.

Those that originated from plants are tasty twigs and although primitive they represented a transitional step towards the modern toothbrush. It has been stated that about seventeen plants could be enumerated as natural sources for several of these oral hygiene devices 2.

The most widely used tree twigs since early times is the “Siwak" or “Miswak" 3. The stick is obtained from a plant called Salvadore Persica that grows around Mecca and the Middle East area in general 4. It is widely used among Moslems after Prophet Mohammed (pbuh) realised its value as a device which should be used by Moslems to clean their teeth. In this respect our Prophet (pbuh) is considered the first dental educator in proper oral hygiene.

Although there is no reference to the use of Siwak in AI-Quran, yet several quotations could be read in the compendium of the sayings of Mohammed ( pbuh ) as to the benefits of Siwak in mouth cleanliness.

One saying reads as follows: "IF IT WERE NOT TOO MUCH A BURDEN ON THE BELIEVERS, I WOULD PRESCRIBE THAT THEY USE THE SIWAK BEFORE EACH PRAYER".

Several anecdotes , incidents, poems and rules of ethics in using Siwak were mentioned in various references talking on the subject of cleanliness of the mouth.

Salvadora Persica is in fact a small tree or shrub with a crooked trunk, seldom more than one foot in diameter, bark scabrous and cracked, whitish with pendulous extremities. The root bark is light brown and the inner surfaces are white, odour is like cress and taste is warm and pungent. Chemically the air dried stem bark of S. Persica is extracted with 80% alcohol and then extracted with ether and run through exhaustive chemical procedures. This showed that it is composed of:

* Trim ethyl amine
* An alkaloid which may be salvadorine
* Chlorides
* High amounts of fluoride and silica
* Sulphur
* Vitamin C
* Small amounts of Tannins, saponins, fiavenoids &
* sterols

PURPOSE OF THE PRESENT INVESTIGATION:

Because of the great quality of oral cleanliness noticed in individuals who use Siwak as the sole device to brush their teeth and because of the low incidence of dental decay of those individuals this work was undertaken ...

The Kabir Baug Yoga Institute, PUNE

by HH » Wed Mar 23, 2005 4:34 pm

The Kabir Baug Yoga Institute, PUNE

The Kabir Baug Yoga Institute, PUNE

The Kabir Baugh Yoga Institute, Pune, dates back to May 27, 1729 when the ruling Peshwa gifted the ashram land to Kabir Gosavi. Since then the place has been used for the spiritual and physical development of mankind. The institute also has a small school for nursery kids and a hostel for rural students. In 1988, Dr Karandikar started yoga therapy here. Anil Bhide, was a heart patient who was given a month to live by doctors. He started yoga therapy under Dr Karandikar's guidance and went on to live for seven more years. Bhide who expired recently was instrumental in building the present institute and his wife Anagha Bhide is also one of the trustees.
Even in the sweltering heat of the afternoon, the Kabir Baugh Yoga Institute radiates a sense of serene calm. There are enough shady trees here to impart a welcome coolness, so different from the hot sun outside. The people who come here regularly do so either for therapeutic reasons, to reduce stress or simply because they wish to align the mind and body into a more natural, self healing state. At first glance all seems quiet. But there is a lot of subdued activity going on. From the morning batches which are just getting over, a kids camp, a boys hostel whose inmates are busy preparing for exams, resident patients and even patients awaiting an X-ray or a health check-up, Kabir Baugh is a community in itself.

yoga Here you will find patients who are now yoga teachers themselves. Dressed in the lemon yellow and maroon uniform, they are volunteers who have offered to stay on and help other patients get better through the use of different yoga techniques. Most of the exercises are based on yoga techniques, others have been devised by the institute's doctors. At an early morning batch of older people, one finds different exercises in every part of a hall like room. The equipment is different too. From wooden benches to various straps which are also based on some premises of physiotherapy, pieces are fashioned according to a patient's needs and judged by the compulsory health check up that patients undergo at the institute.

Says Dr S V Karandikar, who has studied yoga under Yogacharya B K S Iyengar, "As we grow older, our body shrinks and the spaces between the body tissues and skeletal joints decrease. This results in physiological dysfunction which results in pathological changes. The regular practice of yoga helps bring back to normal the physiological functioning of the different anatomical systems, which enables nature to re-arrange and repair the diseased parts of the body the natural way." Dr Karandikar also feels that imparting this knowledge to others is necessary for society. Which is why 150 teachers are being trained at various levels and the institute is also offering its first diploma course to prospective students. The Diploma in Therapeutic and Restorative Yoga is a Post Graduate course aimed at BSc students. It will be based on the gurukul system of instruction and will require students to stay inside the institute's premises. Read more about the course in our career section.

"Teaching here, is based on modern methods of instruction. The use of computers and video equipment facilitates better understanding," says Dr Nivedita Pingle who teaches at the institute and has also recently set up her own clinic in Kothrud. Pingale also feels that a lot of small yoga centres have mushroomed in the city recently. "But most of these are by untrained people who often do more harm than good. After all, yoga exercises mean that you are working your body. If the methods are wrong, serious injury could result. Unfortunately, legal help and laws are sorely lacking," says Pingale. Her time is divided between the separate batches the institute has for children, adults and senior citizens. There are separate classes for people and children suffering from various disorders and diseases like cerebral palsy, Ischemic heart disease, lumbar and cervical spondylosis, diabetes, asthma, hypertension, osteoarthritis and paralysis.

A patient who comes to the institute for the first time needs to pay a one-time registration and consultation fee of Rs 100 each and Rs 250 per month for three days a week. There are also intensive programmes for people who come from outside the city. These people can reside in the premises itself and attend classes twice daily. Most try this treatment when conventional methods have failed. Others do so because they wish to get in touch with their inner self. Ultimately as with any other form of treatment, it is the benefits which count. So far the patients and people who come to the institute seem very satisfied. They are also motivated and some are now training to take this science to the areas they come from. They helped themselves first, now they are trying to help others.

It’s Been No Smoke, All Fire For Years: CM

by HH » Fri Mar 25, 2005 12:05 pm

It’s Been No Smoke, All Fire For Years: CM

Hyderabad, March 24: Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhar Reddy was a child smoker. He puffed cigarettes from the age of 11 and finally gave up on his 40th birthday.
The Chief Minister himself disclosed this while speaking at an anti-smoking workshop at the Jubilee Hall here. “I started smoking at the age of 11,” said YSR. “After I joined a hostel to study for SSLC I became a chain smoker. There was no one to check the habit.”

YSR said he kicked the habit when he turned 40 and had stuck to the decision.[i ]“I am 55 plus now and haven’t smoked for 15 years,”[/i] he told an amused audience. “Nothing is impossible”. The Chief Minister poked fun at former health minister and Telugu Desam leader Nagam Janardhan Reddy, who, too, revealed that he smoked till 45 and then kicked the habit.

Referring to Janardhan Reddy’s quip that he had put on weight after quitting smoking, YSR said that he had taken care of that problem by controlling his food habits. The audience burst into laughter when YSR asked the former health minister if he had sugar problem. Janardhan Reddy smiled and nodded.

GUTKA BAN LIKELY
The State government will consider reimposing ban on gutka on the lines of neighbouring Maharashtra government. The Chief Minister told the workshop on tobacco-free initiative programme for policy makers at the Jubilee Hall that the government would get information on the initiative taken by Maharashtra government and see that consumption of gutka was stopped here.

The Chief Minister was responding to a suggestion by Janardhan Reddy who wanted the government to re-examine ban on gutka. Janardhan Reddy said the Supreme Court had struck down the ban on gutka on technical grounds and the Maharashtra government had subsequently rectified defects and imposed ban again.

“We will see what has happened in Maharashtra and see that gutka consumption is stopped here. Consumption of gutka is one of the major causes for oral cancer and its dangerous,” the Chief Minister told the gathering. The Chief Minister also welcomed the suggestion of cine actor Dr Rajasekhar to display “Tobacco is injurious to health” on cinema posters and government posters.

SMELL

by HH » Tue Mar 29, 2005 11:03 am

SMELL

Image

* Role of Smell
Smell is one of the chemical senses, the other being taste. They are so called because they sense chemicals, and smells are, of course, chemicals. With these senses we sample our environment for information. We are continuously testing the quality of the air we breathe (this will alert us to potential dangers, e.g. smoke) as well as using this sense to inform us of other relevant information, such as the presence of food or another individual. The chemicals detected by our sensory systems need to have certain properties. For instance, odour molecules must be small enough to be volatile (less than 300-400 relative molecular mass) so that they can vapourise, reach the nose and then dissolve in the mucus. This tells us that smell, unlike taste, can signal over long distances (an early warning device). We appear to have an innate ability to detect bad, aversive smells. One-day old babies give facial expressions that indicate rejection when given fish or rotten egg odour.

But, is our olfactory system doing more than just giving us warnings? Yes, of course. Amongst other possibilities, it serves a recognition function. We all have our own unique smell (some more pleasant than others! - but that's another story, see "mate choice" below) and can recognise and be recognised by our smell.

Dogs can distinguish between the smell of T-shirts worn by non-identical twins (they couldn't tell the difference between identical twins - presumably because they smell identical!). Children can distinguish between the smell of their siblings and other children of the same age. Babies recognise their own mothers' smell and mothers recognise their own babies' smell. Emotion can be communicated by smell. Dogs and horses are very sensitive to the smell of fear in humans. Recent research has shown that a panel of women can discriminate between armpit swabs taken from people watching "happy" and "sad" films. Men were less good at this. The emotions of others, for example fear, contentment, sexuality, may therefore be experienced and communicated by smell. Memory is often associated with smell. Smell and memory are intimately linked - although this phenomenon is not well understood.
How we smell (some estimates suggest we can distinguish around 10,000 different smells - but see "Odour Code" below), why we smell and the impact of smell on our everyday life are poorly understood. We certainly underestimate the importance of smell to our well-being - ask an anosmic (someone who has lost some or all of their sense of smell). Some anosmics suffer from depression and their quality of life is severely affected - at the moment there is little that can be done to help them.
There are suggestions that smell can influence mood, memory, emotions, mate choice, the immune system and the endocrine system (hormones). We can communicate by smell - without knowing it. In fact the sense of smell could be said to be at the mind-body interface.

* Anosmia

Anosmia is a condition in which the sense of smell is reduced or lost entirely. It can be caused by traumatic head injury (e.g. a fall in which the head receives a severe blow) or a virus (a bad cold, or infection of the nasal mucosa). Some people are born without a sense of smell - congenital anosmia, and some develop it as a consequence of another disorder, e.g. Alzheimer's disease. Generally, traumatic head injury causes an irreversible anosmia (although some people have reported a recovery) and viral anosmia is temporary (although some people report long-term effects). Anosmia is not life-threatening and for this reason, and because of a lack of information available to GPs (medics), it tends not to be treated (certainly this is true in the UK). As a result it is hugely under reported - it is much more common that you might imagine. There are a limited number of treatments at centres scattered around the world. For further information go to our ANOSMIA website.

Visit: http://www.cf.ac.uk/biosi/staff/jacob/A ... osmia.html

* Smell of Money
There's money in smell - around $24 billion is spent on scented products per annum in the US alone - but "Money has no smell" (who said this? Answer).
There are many possible commercial exploitations for smell, odour and taste:
• Fragrances tailored to individuals' odour phenotype
• Designer scents and flavours (based on cloning of taste and odorant receptors)
• Technologies to modulate odour/taste (odour/taste-antagonists)
• Mood effects of odours (e.g. volatile steroids)
• Partner preference and fertility (HLA-related human body odours)
• Testing deficits in smell (e.g. in Alzheimer's disease)
• AgroChem - pest management based on odour

* Role of Smell

* Anosmia

* Smell of Money

… Smell therapy and the clinical use of odour is an area for the future (see below Therapy using smell memory).

Practical Guide To Healthier Life

by HH » Fri Apr 15, 2005 7:40 pm

Practical Guide To Healthier Life

Good health and staying fit without any disease is a dream for all of us. It is not easy and requires a lot of hardwork and determination. But will that discourage you from doing something that would make you look as young as your son/daughter even at 60? Know your body today and do all that is possible to make this dream a reality.

There are four major constituents for good health:

Proper nourishment through nutrients

Efficient functioning of the excretory organs through regular secretion

Stimulating the respiratory and circulatory systems through exercise

Balancing of the endocrine and nervous systems through yoga

PROPER NOURISHMENT

Satvic food like vegetables, fruits, milk and milk products increase energy level and reduce incidence of heart ailments, diabetes and hypertension. Sometimes our diet is energy-usurping and acid-producing blocking proper drainage.

Eat more frequently and never skip meals. Grazing is better for you than gorging. Your goal should be to eat approximately every three hours. Establish scheduled meal times and stick to them. Regularity in your eating habits is critical.

Frequent eating speeds up your metabolism due to the thermic effect of food

Frequent meals prevent binges and control cravings

Frequent meals maintain high energy and insulin levels by regulating blood sugar

Frequent eating promotes better utilisation of nutrients

Eating smaller meals more often reduces fat storage through portion control.

Taper your calories. Make breakfast your largest meal and dinner your smallest. There’s an old saying, ‘‘Eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince and dinner like a pauper.’’ Start eating early in the day and eat your last meal at least two or three hours before bedtime. Maintain a consistent eating pattern seven days a week.

THE ROLE OF YOGA

Medical science has recognised yoga’s therapeutic value in balancing the nervous and endocrine systems. It has proved effective as an alternative therapy in asthma, diabetes, high blood pressure, arthritis and digestive disorders. Yoga is the science of right living and needs to be incorporated in daily life as a culture. Yoga promotes regeneration and ensures that the body is aligned in the way God programmed it.

Practising yoga and pranayama nourishes the whole body, stimulates the brain centres and raises the energy level. Anger and anxiety are dispelled and provides tranquillity, concentration and a strong memory.

Depletion of energy leads to deterioration of the organs and metabolic dysfunction and yoga reverses this process.

What Does It Mean To Be Fit?

What Does It Mean To Be Fit?
Image

When we think of the word "fit," what comes to most people's minds is strength and flexibility. When exercise specialists describe fitness, however, they take five different categories into consideration: body composition, flexibility, muscular strength, muscular endurance, and aerobic fitness.

Body Composition refers to how your body is made up - your height relative to your weight, the percentage of fat relative to the percentage of muscle.

Flexibility refers to your range of motion - what's your ability to bend in various ways without doing yourself harm.

Muscular Strength refers to the greatest amount of force a particular group of muscles can produce - for example, the greatest weight you are capable of lifting just once.

Muscular Endurance is different. It refers to your ability to produce a moderate force over a longer period of time. An example is lifting half of your maximum four times per minute for a few minutes.

Aerobic Fitness is different again. It refers to your body's ability to perform low-intensity tasks over a long period of time.

When you injure your back it's usually because you have done something that requires you to be fitter than you are in one, or more, of these various categories. So when you think about becoming fitter, try to consider your lifestyle and the types of activities you ask your body to do. For more information visit http://www.backrelief.com.

STAY FIT

by HH » Mon May 09, 2005 9:26 pm

STAY FIT

Fortunately, things have changed since the "no pain, no gain" days. Researchers have found that 30 minutes of moderately intense aerobic activity on most days of the week can achieve functional fitness and reduce the risk of disease. If you want to spare your joints, using the Elliptical Trainer, Exercise Bike and Weight Training are good ways to get moderate exercise.

For optimal benefits, especially weight control, you need to exercise longer, 60 minutes on most days each week. That sounds daunting to many busy people. However, you don't need to fit all your exercise into one session or limit yourself to one activity. For example, take a brisk 15-minute walk on the treadmill in the morning and another after dinner. Jump on the bike for 20 to 30 minutes one day during your favourite television program.

It all adds up.
