Mother's Day

by IMFBreturns » Thu May 05, 2005 1:34 pm

I was planning on sending my mom a present for Mother's Day (2nd Sunday in May). Well she's comng down to Hyd the week after so I have some extra time to buy her something nice ... probably a nice saree or something...anyway...do any of you observe/celebrate Mother's Day?
I can please only one person per day. Today is not your day. Tomorrow isn't looking good either.

Well as I said above, Mother's Day is the 2nd Sunday in May (there are some countries that observe Mother's Day on different dates). The 3rd Sunday in June is Father's Day. I'm not sure if other countries actually observe this one on different dates like Mother's Day.....

is there any significance attached to the "second sunday of May" or "third sunday of June" or are they just some random dates chosen by Greeting card companies?

Well there is a lot of history involved. Long story short...the president of the US (actually two different prezs for both dates). Mother's Day actually started out with an African-American woman giving a memorial speech for her mother and wrote lots of letters to the US gov't to get a day recognized for Mother's (close to Memorial Day -a day when ppl remember those who have died in war) so that ppl can also show appreciation for mothers...Similarily Father's Day came into being. Another lady heard a Mother's day sermon and she had lost her mother already so she wanted to setup something to show her dad how special he was for her....and the rest is pretty much history...

Hope that explained it quickly...otherwise look it up...hehe

All said and done, I think Mother's Day / Father's Day /whatever day is concept as stupid as George Bush. Why only devote one day to you mother, the person who has made you what you are today?

yes, you should spend every day of your life thinking up new methods of painful torture to punish your parents for bringing you into such a bland, pointless world

The Story of Mother's Day

The Story of Mother's Day

The earliest Mother's Day celebrations can be traced back to the spring celebrations of ancient Greece in honor of Rhea, the Mother of the Gods. During the 1600's, England celebrated a day called "Mothering Sunday". Celebrated on the 4th Sunday of Lent (the 40 day period leading up to Easter*), "Mothering Sunday" honored the mothers of England.
*(For more information on Lent/Easter check out - Easter on the Net)

During this time many of the England's poor worked as servants for the wealthy. As most jobs were located far from their homes, the servants would live at the houses of their employers. On Mothering Sunday the servants would have the day off and were encouraged to return home and spend the day with their mothers. A special cake, called the mothering cake, was often brought along to provide a festive touch.

As Christianity spread throughout Europe the celebration changed to honor the "Mother Church" - the spiritual power that gave them life and protected them from harm. Over time the church festival blended with the Mothering Sunday celebration . People began honoring their mothers as well as the church.

In the United States Mother's Day was first suggested in 1872 by Julia Ward Howe (who wrote the words to the Battle hymn of the Republic) as a day dedicated to peace. Ms. Howe would hold organized Mother's Day meetings in Boston, Mass ever year.

In 1907 Ana Jarvis, from Philadelphia, began a campaign to establish a national Mother's Day. Ms. Jarvis persuaded her mother's church in Grafton, West Virginia to celebrate Mother's Day on the second anniversary of her mother's death, the 2nd Sunday of May. By the next year Mother's Day was also celebrated in Philadelphia.

Ms. Jarvis and her supporters began to write to ministers, businessman, and politicians in their quest to establish a national Mother's Day. It was successful as by 1911 Mother's Day was celebrated in almost every state. President Woodrow Wilson, in 1914, made the official announcement proclaiming Mother's Day as a national holiday that was to be held each year on the 2nd Sunday of May.

While many countries of the world celebrate their own Mother's Day at different times throughout the year, there are some countries such as Denmark, Finland, Italy, Turkey, Australia, and Belgium which also celebrate Mother's Day on the Second Sunday of May.

Mother's day, father's day, valentine's day, friendship day - they all suck big time. I mean do you wait the whole year for that one day to show your mum/dad/partner that you love them. Every day is to be celebrated. Open that bottle. What are you saving it for?

hmmmm what about Teacher's Day? Teachers are a different category. They are not related to you and you couldn't really call them your friends. So, are they the only ones who give unselfishly and hence merit a day in their honor?

Well I don't wait the whole year...as I said above...I try and make sure that I do things that I think my mom would appreciate. But there are some days that a lot of hype is good for. Example: My mom's B-day is on Feb 14th (hmm...something else on this day?!) so we get her lots of roses and chocolates and take her out to dinner...this was when i was there..now I don't do that so when she comes to India...I treat her royally...

As for teachers not being friends or related?! why not...it's a small world and I think teacher's are even parents (someday) and have friends???

A single day to remember them is just so in case you haven't appreciated them openly throughout the year...it's ur chance to make up for it and appreciate...i guess.....
