Anyone into proper debating? Used to do it years ago as a secondry school student.
Not sure if this is a workable idea or not, if it is i'd like to keep the actual thread as clean as possible, so this thread can be used for deciding upon the rules, arranging teams, judges, post-debate fist-fights, etc.
The rules I would propose are as follows.
1. A limit of 500 words per post
2. 2 Teams of 2 people, Proposition and Opposition can be arranged here
3. 3 judges (if possible, 1 otherwise), who's decision is final
4. Proposition team lead posts first, then Opposition team lead, then Prop member 2, then Opp member 2.
5. Member 2 of each team gets 100 words rebuttal time in addition to their post (total 600).
6. After both member 2's have posted, Prop Team lead and Opp team lead get a chance to summerise the teams argument (no more than 200 words).
7. Each member must clearly label the subject line in the following format
[Opposition/Proposition][Position on Team][Purpose of post (eg main post, rebutal, summary)]
8. After a debate is announced (here) and judges and teams decided upon, the Judge would act as chair of the debate initially, and post on the actual thread defining the title and the teams. Each person has 24 hours from the previous post to make their own post (or in the case of member 2, 24 to make post and rebuttal (not 48 hours))
Other things should be obvious, no personal attacks, no posting out of turn, no interference from judges, others, while the debate is going on, etc. Judges must decide who won the debate, regardless of what they believe on the matter.
Are these rules OK, anyone have any other ideas?
