I am not a very big fan of parental authority and I hate social norms. Even then I'd say that when people choose engineering because their parents told them to, some of them at least knew that they had to earn a living - not to bring up or feed kids, but to support themselves so that they don't become a burden on their parents, and at one time, doing engineering froma reputed college was one of the quickest way to geta job thru' campus recruitment.
What I am trying to say is - our parents drive us to be somehting which we may not want to become simply because in India, the financial conditions are not good enough for most parents to sit back and let their kids experiment with their life. So, most of them use the simpelst process, they look at the report card and decide the future stream that their kids should take.
Agreed that some parents might even push their kids to do something beyond the kids' means because they hope that somehow their kids will achieve something.
But all in all, it's no use blaming our parents when we want to bang our head on the keyboard.
Let's face it, most of us don't know what job they would love to stay in even if they are given a choice, because there will be some stage in your life when you are financially well-off and bored enough to make posts like 'I want to shoot myself becuase my job is _', and even then it is difficult for you to move away.
If we choose what we love doing, we end up being a workaholic, if we don't, we choose to live for our family, rather than our job. And i am sure, even if your chilhood desire was to become a writer, you would hate it if you had to do it 9-5, under a boss, or even as an independent person, if you have to do it to earn your living.
