Hariharan for Lunch & Guns n Roses for Dinner !!

by Murali Apparaju » Fri Apr 08, 2005 2:11 pm

Hey Folks,

Lately I have been experiencing change, I am listening to Rock & actually enjoying it - My passion was earlier (hold ur breath..) "Ghazals" - it is not as if I don't like ghazals now, but I’m planning to get into Rock seriously. (I actually argued with my wife that the rock lyrics are ghazals at heart!)

Good that our own FM is on air frm tomorrow, now I can alternate betn. Vividh Bharati’s Kehkasha with the Rock music (hopefully) on the other channel.

Actually, I am looking for company - of similar people who are simultaneously into very different genres of music.

I have a genre-crossing interest in music too. Rap, Rapcore, Rock, Heavy metal, death metal, punk rock and telugu film music

My initiation was with Guns N Roses

Look at Metallica, they're a great band for beginners. Also Deep Purple

Album Recommendations (in order of essentialness)

Rolling Stones - Beggers Banquet

The Beatles - White Album

Jimi Hendrix - Electric Ladyland

Bob Dylan - Bringing it All Back Home

The Doors - The Doors

Jefferson Aeroplane - Surrealistic Pillow

Eric Clapton - Layla

Neil Young - Tonight's the Night

Nirvana - Nevermind

The Pixies - Bossanova

The Sex Pistols - Nevermind the Bollox

The Ramones - (get a best of album)

Creedance Clearwater Revival - (Just get a best of album for CCR too)

I think the whole genre classification thing just gets in the way to tell the truth, most of these bands are a mix of at least 2 genres (3 in Dylans case, folk, blues and r&r)

Rite!

People seem to be too interested in sterotyping artists. The truth is that artists may be a mixture of different genres, like Mark said, or they also may switch to a different styles as they evolve/age.

Get a CD of Bryan Adams: Wakin up the neighbours.

Waking up the neighbours.

LOL....once, me and a friend woke up his neighbours by playing Aerosmith's Big Ones at 3 a.m. Bajuwaala budhdha uncle gave us a discourse on civic sense. :D

I'm also into multiple genres. Classic Rock, Psychedellic Rock, Fusion, Hindustani Classical, Ghazals (but I hate JS' music); Old bollywood classics.

Let's chuck the word 'Genre' - yeah right, artistes have their creative liberty to mix n match & yes, even I go by what pleases my ear!

In a recent late night baithak, we played pop, rock & jazz initially & when fully sozzled, sat soaking in classical Ghantasala'

BTW, the album of film Taj Mahal (recent one directed by Akbar Khan) is out & it has a few good ghazis by HH & Preeti Uttam.

Though I started with JS, I too got over him now - the guy just doesn't experiment!

JS bores me too...all his songs sound alike...so does Pankaj Udhas'.

IMO, Hariharan and Talat Aziz are much better

I’m a little irritated with Hari Haran's Tamil slang to his Ghazals lately -great music and bad accent don't go together – HELL NO! (remember Anuradha Sriram’s “isk (sic) bina kya zeena (sic) yaaron”….. from Taal)

The latest collection titled ‘Utsav’ HH sounded as if he came for recording with a huge hangover of tamil music…

Whitesnake is a great band. I got hooked on to Whitesnake when I was in 8th grade. Great music.

Never thought I'd ever like ghazals but I went for a Ghulam Ali and Jagjit Singh concert (for lack of anything better to do! Sacrilegious to the avg ghazal music lover maybe! :) ) and I was surprised that I liked Jagjit Singh's ghazals! They kinda grew on me. Yeah the lyrics caught my attention and I must admit I didn't regret the evening.

I love to hear Jagjit Singh, unfortunately haven't managed to go to any of his concerts.

CtrlAltDel wrote:somehow Jagjit Singh bores me...all his ghazals sound alike...

Yes, right, the music is almost the same, and you can identify a JS ghazal, the moment you hear one, but you need a voice to carry that off.

I like the words mainly...ghazals are actually poetry, put to music...so anyway he sings them, those beautiful words in his velvetty voice is very soothing and deep...

And Ghulam Ali rocks...he can actually make a dull evening come alive with his voice and style...hearing his booming voice on the home music system is like having a 'mehfil' at home...hopefully my neighbours don't mind :)
