Life After Graduation

by Jaan » Tue Apr 05, 2005 8:31 pm

(some of you may know, for others) I will be graduating this semester :) Khushi ki baat sahi hain, par there is a dilemna...

What does one do after graduation?

I want to take a year off but not lose any time inbetween (prepping) for grad school.

I want to work for a year but I cannot do full time and go to night school, I know I will be stressing myself out way too much. Plus, I am working part time now and its more than what I can chew.

Should I apply to grad school in the fall? Should I forget school and work for a year or so? Should I take that well deserved vacation (which is what I really I want)?

For all the people who are done with academics or will be soon, what are you planning on? What do you recommend? How do you make a sound decision? Life is certainly not a box of chocolated right now. :(

Okay, I normally do not do this but for Jaan I will make an exception. This is what I believe in. Does not mean that it is right or wrong.

I am no one for sabbaticals, especially when it concerns education. I would rather you do it all in one shot because it becomes damn difficult to get back to books once you start working or even doing nothing. Perhaps it is fine to work for a couple of years and then do an MBA but for anything else I do not really see the need for any break.

It is like this. You have to do it anyway. Why not get done with it when you are younger and have more energy. More importantly, you have more energy to crib over things. Cribbing is a very important part of your college life. It gives you an outlet to all your frustrations and angst.

I have seen a few guys pursuing post-grad in my university. They had left their jobs for it. The pressure they were under was tremendous. Of course, this was during the time when the Twin Towers came down and jobs were scarce but even today the pressure would mount. Because, after a certain age you are expected to work and support yourself.

Besides, I am all for making ones life a little difficult initially when one has the strength to tackle it. You can always take that vacation later, when you are a lot more settled in life.

Good points.

You still have time on your side, and you do not need to think seriously about money-making just yet.

When you get to a certain age, you will no longer be able to think about studying or anything. At that time, you will have to take a job, whether you like it or not.

You will not have any time for vacations and stuff once you start with your career, so you should have some fun while you can. You do not need to take an entire year off; try to fit the vacation into your schedule.

Have fun, girl! Having a good time should be our priority :).

I disagee with Lucifer & Sharjeel on this. Taking a year off will not ruin your life. And working is not so bad after all. You gain a new set of skills. Plus work experience only adds value to your CV. A grad with experience is more sought after than one without. You could even be travelling during your time off. Trust me, it can be very valuable too. It will not only enrich you but demonstrate to your future employer that you are organised, have used your time efficiently etc

...started writing y'day. got side tracked. hitting submit button now. can't remember if i was gonna say more. if u want more, u know where to find me.
