A Solution May Not Be the Answer
![]()
TIP: Giving a quick solution may not be the best way to help someone, especially if the situation that prompted the question may arise again. In today’s fast-paced work environment, quick solutions exacerbate the tendency to solve a problem and move on without learning from the experience. It is more productive — for you as well — to help the person formulate an approach that will solve the current problem and enable her to handle similar situations in the future without your help.
EXAMPLE: Sarah asks you, her supervisor, how to gain the cooperation of David, a member of another department. Instead of giving Sarah specific advice about what motivates David, try asking Sarah the following: What causes people to cooperate or to be uncooperative? How will asking David how he feels allow you to understand what he needs to be cooperative? Why should you ask David what the next step is? Use Sarah’s answers to guide her in developing her own approach to gaining David’s cooperation. By coaching Sarah instead of giving her a quick answer, you will help her solve her immediate need and give her the tools and confidence to resolve similar situations in the future.
Coaches help athletes achieve top performance. Today, more and more managers and professionals rely on coaching skills to get top performance from their teams...

Easter Monday Mirth & Merriment at the Market
Long ago, the day after Easter was one that Irish people eagerly looked forward to. Not only was it a favorite day for buying and selling livestock and merchandise at fairs and markets, it was also a time for enjoying sports, games, sideshows, dancing, eating, drinking, gambling, and perhaps, even some fisticuffs!
For many years, Easter Monday was also a holy day of obligation in the Roman Catholic Church. That meant one had to go to Mass and abstain from work. All well and good, except that the riotous behavior which often followed during the day and well into the evening didn’t sit well with the clergy. in 1828, the Bishop of Kildare and Leighlin, Dr. John Doyle, prevailed upon other bishops to petition the Pope to make Easter Monday an ordinary working day. The intention was to disassociate the Church from what was perceived as unseemly fun at the fair! The Pope granted the petition, so that from 1829, Easter Monday was no longer a holy day.
If the clergy had hoped that by making it an ordinary working day, the Irish would simply go back to their jobs, they were very much mistaken. For a long time, people kept what they called ‘the old holiday’ and honored the tradition of taking the time off to enjoy themselves.
From tugs of war to hurling matches and card games to reels and jigs, Easter Monday was always filled with fun and festivities. Eventually, however, the fairs began losing their joyful character and evolved into just another day of trade.

Trysting Stones
Centuries ago, before wedding ceremonies moved from the bride's house to the church steps, and finally into the church itself, the joining of a couple was often conducted in a place of mystical significance. On Cape Clear, Co. Cork, there is a townland called Comillane where you'll find a pillarstone known as Cloch na Gealluna - 'The Trysting Stone'. It has a hole right through it and in pre-Christian times, a couple would join hands through the stone and in the presence of the local king, they would wed. Similarly, at Kilmaolcheader church near Dingle, Co. Kerry, stands a pillar with a circular opening near the top. It's said that a couple is engaged if they join hands through the opening.

Hooda: A Lawyer, Politician, Cricket Fan...
Saturday March 5 2005
CHANDIGARH: By opting for Bhupinder Singh Hooda as the next Chief Minister of Haryana on Friday, the Congress party has opted for a younger, post-independence era leader from the state.
Hooda was born Sep 15, 1947 - just a month after India got independence from British rule - in Sanghi village of Haryana's Jat community dominated Rohtak district.
Hooda belongs to the politically dominant Jat community in Haryana. He is the Lok Sabha MP from Haryana - his fourth stint in the lower house.
Hailing from a family of agriculturists, Hooda was a lawyer by profession. He started his political career in Rohtak district in late 1960s and became block president of the Congress in 1972.
A law graduate who studied in the Panjab University here and Delhi University, he was elected to the Lok Sabha for the first time in 1991. He was re-elected to the Lok Sabha from Rohtak in 1996, 1998 and 2004.
He defeated Haryana Jat strongman Devi Lal thrice from the Rohtak constituency. His father Chaudhary Ranbir Singh was a member of the State Assembly a few times.
Hooda was made Haryana Congress president in 1997 and continued to be on the post till mid-2003 when Bhajan Lal replaced him.
But Hooda pipped Bhajan Lal to the Chief Minister's post on Friday. He was elected at a legislature party meeting in New Delhi attended by 50 Congress legislators.
State Congress president Bhajan Lal and legislators supporting him boycotted the meeting. Hooda is interested in sports and reading and is an ardent cricket fan.
He will have to resign his Rohtak Lok Sabha seat after taking over as Chief Minister and contest for a seat in the State Assembly within six months.

SIGNIFICANCE OF LORD SIVA
Of all the Hindu Gods none appealed to the emotions of a Hindu mind as much as Lord Shiva, the dweller of the mountains and the bearer of the trident, who with His third eye symbolizes the all knowing awareness of the very Brahman.
Although universally acknowledged as one of the trinity gods of Hinduism, to His followers, He is Maheswara, representing the Trinity all by Himself, His different aspects manifesting themselves as the creator, preserver and destroyer of the worlds He creates. Symbolically He is worshipped as Lingeswara, which name stands more for His creative prowess than sexual.
Historians believe that He was a pre-Vedic god who was admitted into the Vedic Pantheon because of His immense popularity among many non-Aryan tribes. There is a theory that the seated yogi found on the seals of Indus Valley Civilization, was a prototype of Lord Shiva only. References to Him are found in the Rigveda.
In the Mahabharata we come across several references to Him. Both Arjuna and Krishna worshipped Him and obtained favors from Him. In the Ramayana too we come across several references to Him. Sage Valmiki depicted Ravana, the demon king and chief villain of the epic, as a great devotee and daily worshipper of Lord Shiva. It is believed that worship of His icons was widely prevalent as early as 2nd or 3rd Century B.C.,.

Gaia Hypothesis
The Gaia Hypothesis proposes that our planet functions as a single organism that maintains conditions necessary for its survival. The truly startling component of the Gaia hypothesis is the idea that the Earth is a single living entity with the capacity of self regulation.Earth is more than a sphere of rock with a thin layer of air, ocean and life covering the surface. We feel that we belong here as if this planet were indeed our home. Long ago the Greeks, thinking this way, gave to the Earth the name Gaia or, for short, Ge. In those days, science and theology were one and science, although less precise, had soul. As time passed this warm relationship faded and was replaced by the frigidity of the schoolmen. The life sciences, no longer concerned with life, fell to classifying dead things and even to vivisection. Ge was stolen from theology to become no more the root from which the disciplines of geography and geology were named. Now at last there are signs of a change. Science becomes holistic again and rediscovers soul, and theology, moved by ecumenical forces, begins to realise that Gaia is not to be subdivided for academic convenience and that Ge is much more than just a prefix. “

Scot Free
Meaning
To escape from pursuers or to get off without payment.
Origin
Ask an American where this phrase comes from and you are likely to be told that it refers to Dred Scott, a slave who crossed from a 'slave state' to a 'free state'. Other explanations are relate to the scot, which was the Scottish term for a unit of taxation. Poor people didn't have to pay tax and so got off 'scot free'. This system of taxation was in use in the middle ages and so pre-dates the Dred Scot story by several hundred years. A slate for marking up drinking bills in pubs was also called a scot. If you got free drinks you would be getting off scot free.

Contractors Strike Dam Deals
The turnkey concept, introduced by the State government to expedite construction of irrigation projects, is helping contractors make a quick buck. Sources said that most of the short-listed construction firms, which have bagged more than two irrigation packages, have entrusted the works to subcontractors after taking a certain percentage as commission. “This has happened in some cases,” an official said. “The main contractor took nine per cent commission from a subcontractor, who in turn entrusted the work to another subcontractor for a commission of 12 per cent. Of course, the work will be done in the name of the original contractor.”

Telangana Woes Take A Back Seat
Hyderabad, March 22: Disgruntlement is brewing in a section of Telangana Rashtra Samiti legislators for not getting an opportunity for highlighting the issues confronting Telangana in the Assembly. Though they are not in a position to speak out openly, these TRS MLAs are expressing their dissatisfaction over the party’s performance in the ongoing budget session of the Assembly. “Except two or three selected MLAs like M Satyanarayana Reddy, Padma Devender Reddy and Rama-linga Reddy, who always hog limelight, we are not getting any opportunity to express our opinions on any subject,” a party MLA told this correspondent.
“Whether it was a law and order issue, Motion of Thanks to Governor’s address or budgetary dema-nds, the TRS MLAs were more enthusiastic about attacking the TD, rather than highlighting the plight of Telangana. The deterioration of law and order in the wake of recent encounters, on which the TRS raised a hue and cry in the past, has no way found a mention in the members’ speeches,” he said.
# “We don’t think there is any such direction from the party leadership, but the members are going overboard to please YSR, perhaps for their own interests,” another TRS MLA in the disgruntled group said.
# “It looks like we are playing a second fiddle to the Congress, just because we are part of the government. We have to keep our mouths shut just for that reason,” he said

Happiness
I have found that if you love life, life will love you back.
— Arthur Rubinstein, Polish-American Classical Pianist (1887-1982)
We either make ourselves happy or miserable. The amount of work is the same.
— Carlos Castaneda, Peruvian-American Mystic and Author (1925-2000)
All happy people are grateful. Ungrateful people cannot be happy. We tend to think that being unhappy leads people to complain, but it’s truer to say that complaining leads to people becoming unhappy.
— Dennis Prager, American Radio Host and Author (b. 1948)
Don't worry. Be happy.
— Meher Baba, Indian Spiritual Leader (1894-1969), quote popularized in a song by Bobby McFerrin, 20th-century American songwriter and performer
Be happy. Talk happiness. Happiness calls out responsive gladness in others. There is enough sadness in the world without yours.... never doubt the excellence and permanence of what is yet to be. Join the great company of those who make the barren places of life fruitful with kindness.... Your success and happiness lie in you.... The great enduring realities are love and service.... Resolve to keep happy and your joy and you shall form an invincible host against difficulties.
