How to become a film artist?

by Kavita » Fri Mar 18, 2005 9:11 pm

Before you start telling how to become a hero or heoine, let me make it clear, my question is how to become an artist in the film world, not necessarily as in the art films, but should have some commercial success too.

So CAD, you suggest casting couch. Ok, its one way to become a film actor.

I want to know how to become an 'artist'? Hope you can make out the difference.

ok...:D

first the person has to go thru the casting couch and become an actor...after a few hits when the films begin to flop, give stmts that he/she is looking for "meaningful" roles to "discover and unleash my full potential" etc etc.

then sleep with arty film makers and get a role in their next movie...

simple! :D

get involved with a local dramatic society, if there isn't one (i'd be very suprised) organise your own. Play small parts/offer to help out backstage. Get to know the people better, get bigger roles. If you like it, enroll in drama college (is there such thing in India?). write some of your own material, always looks good.

At this stage you should have a lot of stage experience and would be ready to crossover to movies should you wish. the most important thing for you to concentrate on would be networking, everything in the entertainment business is based on who you know, and how well you know them. Keep a book of names, addresses of everyone you ever act with, keep in touch with them. Be extremely social and outgoing, organise charity events to increase your exposure. consider dating a crickiter.

pretty much remember that you're selling your image at all times, you are a brand name, the value of that brand depends on the amount of positive exposure you get. Once you are reasonably sucessful, choose your movies very carefully, especially since you want to stay on the "arty" path, have faith in up-and-coming directors with off-the-wall ideas, even if they may not be large success's comercially. See Ewan McGregor, that guy knows how to choose his movies. there's a common theme in all the movies he chooses to act in, namely fantasy worlds (Mulon Rouge, Big Fish, The one with Cameron Diaz, Trainspotting all have an elements of escapism in them) now he is the actor to call when you want a dreamy fantasy world male lead. he's also managed for the most part to maintain artistic integrity despite being in mostly mainstream movies.

I think the true-blue 'actors' nowadays are Om Puri,Naseeruddin Shah,

Nandita Das,Tabu,Shabana Azmi & the ilk.

To become like them, either u need to have the 'Dusky' looks

or should have loads of potentially uncorked spirit within.

I mean the "Zeal to succeed","inner Fire","Soulful acting Skills"

Blah Blah Blah.......

Look at Sameera Reddy. After tht Pankaj Udhas Video,Every1 said She's

the next Smita Patil. And Noe she's abt to be the Next Helen :?

There are some theater groups but I did not find out how they opearate. One interesting group was some xyz Puppetry art group. There are art schools and colleges too but are very much acedemic.

That was some good piece of info from you all. had some more question in this line.

What are different kinds of people apart from director, choreographer, actors, involved in a film making. Whats the nature of thier job and whos job is the more demanding (I mean demanding lot of hard work)? Who is a cinematographer? Whats still photography, motion photography...

The Chief-of-da-movie-Staff is Undoubtedly the Director

The purse Strings belong to da Producer

The one-who-sees-that-costs-do-not-escalate is the Production Controller

Then there is the Executive Producer whose role I don' clearly Understand

Movie making is like a well-oiled machinery where there are many people

who are involved right at the grassroot level right to the top.Important people

include the Producer,Director,Editor,PR guy,Exec.Prod,Music Dir,Lyricist,

Stunt Co-ordinator,cameraman etc etc.

The ones responsible for the actros n actresses coordinate their shoots

are the Secretaries I guess. Then there are the 100 odd spot boys arnd

who do chores like moving the Camera Trolley, handling the cranes,

providing lighting,handing out coffee/Teas etc.

Cinematographer is the Technical term for the Cameraman. He is involved

with the Angle of shot,Lighting used,How the scene is to be shot, what

lens to use,how much to pan and other details.Generally he has a trusted

assistant who holds the camera and shoots the scenes.

Here I must say that since I was ina hurry,I could'nt provide all the details.

More later

Hey San,

I consider any person skillful to make beautiful/meaningful/wonderful pieces of art as an artist. And by film artist I mean, an artist in film industy. He could be director, choreographer, art director, music director any one who is involved in the making of a movie including light boy, make up man, costume tailor , designer.

wow, my question now look s very vauge to me. Anyways, want I wanted to know was how do people of various streams get into this industry? Do they really feel happy about the kind of work they do? etc, too much of sodi stuff but I am one like that. Sodilamma.

Definitely Stingrae, but I do not have any such intentions, atleast as of now. Of late I have been seeing people from this industry. So was just probing into things like this.
