Err....I seem to have painted a pretty bad picture of myself. But i am not

averse to saying that i don't know that much about technology and its

many avatars that prevade the world. But I am trying to learn and the curve

has'nt yet begun to climb that rapidly.

As u said,Google is a Man's best friend on the internet but I sure messed

up with the GPL thing by not Googling it when I did'nt know that much abt it.

And Lonewolf is right when he says that Comp Sc Students know that bit

more than a common Electronix Engg. like me. For me technology has

always begun with the PC and ended at the Mobile. Also much before I had net access,I read Mags like PCQ,LD & CHIP.Its just that in the past

few years I have been trying to know more abt stuff thatz likely to be

Much-Talked-abt in the Future.I had presented two papers on Nanotechnology

& Plasma Televisions at my college fest too.

When SG said something abt Blender in some thread,I did'nt take any pains

too look it up.But I remembered it when i found that a Mag is giving out

Blender FV with its march issue.

For a fleeting time I had an inclination abt knowing more abt Open Source

but I dunno why,it suddenly Died out and FF is the only piece I have rt now.

I even had RedHat on my college PC but instead of wanting to learn how 2

use it,I promptly instructed the Lab techie to replace it with XP

So Lucifer,it is not ur Fault that you had castigated me.& i Do not mind

at all.in fact this has inspired something within me that I feel will

spur me onto know more.I thank Thee.

On Hindsight I feel that opening this thread has something to do with my

lack of knowledge & tryingto make up for it in someway.... :D

So, we are cool? Good. 8)

If you want to get hardcore with firefox, these links are for you.

Some preferences can be changed in the browser. type about:config in the address bar. then you can select the preference and change values. The link below briefly describes most of the prefs.

http://preferential.mozdev.org/preferences.html

More customization coolness can be found here. You need to manually edit files to make FF/Mozilla sexier.

http://www.mozilla.org/unix/customizing.html#prefs

have fun.

Its not possible unless you have two different processors ,different memory areas /registers in one box just to make it look it look like a single PC

I am not sure about it. As far as my experience goes you cannot have 2 OS's running at the same time. I have no experience with dual processor systems, so i might be wrong.

Personally, I am used to windows. But I use a software called Cygwin, which is a Linux-like environment for Windows. The full download is about 1.6gb and consists of almost all the tools available for linux. Cygwin is not a operating system, its just an emulation layer for Linux API over the Windows API. So the linux function calls map to windows function calls. I can have cygwin run while windows is running. You can run KDE (compiled with cygwin) on windows. Yesterday i read an article which describes a way to make kde the default shell for windows. no more explorer shell. I am gonna try it over the weekend.

The reason I use cygwin is opensource software. I read lots of code and contribute to a 3D software called blender. With cygwin i have all tools at hand to download and compile out of the box.

if you are still reading this, you can get cygwin here. http://cygwin.com/

As you said Cygwin emulates linux over windows and mainly used in development,I guess the question was if there could be two full blown operting systems controlling a single system, the answer as of now is no ,unless the two different operating system vendors collaborate in some way to achieve that.

on a related note I have limited experience using Cygwin, since Windows already supports POSIX do we really need something like Cygwin,or how different is the Linux API from POSIX.

I think i made clear that i am not sure about 2 os's running on a pc at a given time.

i was just telling him about cygwin to give him an idea. and the reason i use cygwin is for compiling blender and firefox. with cygwin i have all tools (perl, sed, awk, gcc, make etc) and i just have to type make to get the builds going.

With VS 6.0, i need to install all the crap and set up. so u get the idea.

For the past few days my FF seems to have been Hibernating. When i

Double-Click on the FF icon on my Quick-Launch,The browser opens

after an inordinate delay of more than 1 1/2 minute!!! This delay lasts longer

when I have closed it with some tabs open (I have Session-Saver which

automatically opens the unclosed windows).

But even after I close all the tabs and then close FF,the next time I open it,

even the blank page takes more than a Minute to open.I have tweaked the

Browser with the "about:config" tweak.

Yes you can! There are servers where you can install multiple OSs on a linux platform such that all of them run simultaneously. Basically, Linux provies an environment for these other OSs. Will cost you a bomb, though.

I have a iriver iHP 140.One awesome player, its for the geeks.iPod is much cuter but this thing is more solid and more flexible. It has many options. It can be used as an external hard drive.iPod just stores the songs based on the ID3 Tags and it converts them to WMA format, you cant move songs from iPod to your PC back again. And the main problem with iPod is that you have to use iTunes for transfering the songs. In iRiver, all I do is click and drag,I even store movies on my player, then I transfer them back to my friends PC.Its real easy to use and you can store songs by ID3 tags or like an Harddrive. :D And the battery life for iPod is just 9hrs where as iRiver has 15 hrs.
