All-Woman Police Station Offers Solutions To Men Too
VISAKHAPATNAM, MARCH 8. Ever heard of an all-woman police station receiving and solving cases pertaining to husband-beating and other cases of harassment of men?
The Women's Police Station here, known as Women Protection Cell, has found that some of the complaints received from women alleging dowry harassment, wife-beating and illicit contact with other women by their husbands were `false and concocted.'
Following carrot-and-stick tactics resorted to by specially-trained women cops, some of the accused had admitted that their complaints were not true.
In some cases, men themselves have walked into the police station with a long list of complaints against their `better-halves.' While some complaints were due to ego clash, others ranged from non-cooperative and quarrelsome attitude to `too much interference by their in-laws.'
The Women Protection Cell located close to the police commissionerate has become a landmark in the city for a variety of reasons. Managed by a 12-woman team and assisted by counsellors and the Andhra University Social Work Department's faculty, it has achieved the distinction of solving nearly 90 per cent of the cases through counselling.
"On an average, 10 per cent of the cases handled by us are related to beating of husbands by women***** or other sorts of harassment," admits the Sub-Inspector of Police and in-charge of Women Protection Cell, D. Jayalakshmi. She told The Hindu on Tuesday that 75 per cent of the cases received by women against their husbands related to 498 A (dowry harassment) of Indian Penal Code.
Other cases pertain to illicit contacts, Section 495 (second marriage) and 420 (cheating).

The Miser
A miser sold all that he had and bought a lump of gold, which he buried in a hole in the ground by the side of an old wall and went to look at daily. One of his workmen observed his frequent visits to the spot and decided to watch his movements. He soon discovered the secret of the hidden treasure, and digging down, came to the lump of gold, and stole it. The Miser, on his next visit, found the hole empty and began to tear his hair and to make loud lamentations. A neighbor, seeing him overcome with grief and learning the cause, said, "Pray do not grieve so; but go and take a stone, and place it in the hole, and fancy that the gold is still lying there. It will do you quite the same service; for when the gold was there, you had it not, as you did not make the slightest use of it."

The Bear and the Two Travelers
TWO MEN were traveling together, when a Bear suddenly met them on
their path. One of them climbed up quickly into a tree and
concealed himself in the branches. The other, seeing that he
must be attacked, fell flat on the ground, and when the Bear came
up and felt him with his snout, and smelt him all over, he held
his breath, and feigned the appearance of death as much as he
could. The Bear soon left him, for it is said he will not touch
a dead body. When he was quite gone, the other Traveler
descended from the tree, and jocularly inquired of his friend
what it was the Bear had whispered in his ear. "He gave me this
advice," his companion replied. "Never travel with a friend who
deserts you at the approach of danger."
Misfortune tests the sincerity of friends.
