Tibetan Art : Leslie and Terris NguyenTemple
Leslie and Terris Nguyen Temple work in a studio in the jungle on Maui, Hawaii where their inspiration is often the natural beauty of the valley around them. They are unique among Western artists in that their contempary works reflect the knowledge and experience they have of Tibetan art and culture.
Leslie and Terris have been working together for a decade creating some extraordinary art work. Trained in Tibetan art, they completed two historical monumental Buddhist images for Tsurphu monastery in Tibet.
These giant silk appliques are located at Tsurphu Karmapa's seat in Tibet.
Terris Temple is the first Westerner to be trained in the art of Tibetan thangka painting nearly 40 years ago. His focused enthusiasm for this art form led him to teach first at Naropa Institute, then at Buddhist centers across Hawaii. As well as creating thangkas, he paints birds, flowers and landscapes on silks with mineral and botanical pigments. He is presently re-editing the Tsurphu Thangka video.
Leslie Nguyen's creative background and study of psychology led her to first work in art therapy . After traveling, working and sketching in Asia, she met Terris Temple and began the study of Tibetan thangka painting. Leslie uses silks and brocades blended with painting to create fresh imagery based on techniques found in Eastern Tibet. She creates thangkas, seascapes, portraits, as well as enviormental art using silk applique technics.

Republic Day
Commemorating the day India became a Republic (26th January), the Republic Day is celebrated in Delhi with a splendid parade - a colourful affair with soldiers marching in unison, followed by folk dancers, school children and floats from various states.

The Beating Retreat which marks the end of the celebrations on 29th January, is a moving ceremony with massed military bands playing at Vijay Chowk.

Carol's Tatting
Tatting is one of the gentle arts of Victorian times, an 18th century form of Needlework that originated in Europe, it is made with a thread and shuttle. I got interested in tatting in 1989. A friend taught my Mother and my Mother taught me. I hope to teach my daughter someday. I have tatted beautiful dollies, bookmarks, christmas trees, snowflakes, tatted pins, note cards and handkerchiefs.

The first heart was tatted with Altin Basak thread and the center is made from a stone called Rhodochrosite. The second heart was made with Manuela thread and the center is made from bone. The third heart is also made with Manuela thread and I'm not sure what this center of this is called.
These Hearts were designed by Jane Eborall* and you can find more exciting patterns by Jane on her web page. * Visit: http://www.users.globalnet.co.uk/~nickeb/

*Remember, if you do art, then you are an artist. Period. You may not be a great artist or even a good artist. You may or may not be educated in art. You may not make a living doing art. You are still an artist if you do Art on the Nails.

* Venice

"I was totally stunned: before me was not just a city, but a living entity. Each square, each bridge, and each building there is as unique as each leaf on tree; one cannot find even two bricks alike, because each of them embodies an ancestor's talent, imagination, and creativity, and therefore, is alive. I could hear the breath of the city in the sound of wooden oars stroking the quiet ripples in the canals; I could feel it's heartbeats in the ringing of church bells, that divine sound which floats from hundreds of church towers day and night throughout the city; I could even see the flow of life through the city's arteries, in the elegant S-shaped Grand Canal and other criss-crossing roads of water that have nurtured the city and its people for centuries. But what is more amazing, each cell of the city seems to emanate a spirit, as though baptized by the rich history of nearly 1500 years. I only wish my experience of the soul and the spirit of Venice may also touch your mind and heart--through my canvas."

* Cover Art : One Life

Three's Company
The painting on the cover is by Boulder artist Gina Blickenstaff. Entitled "Three's Company," it is a depiction of the "One Life." This mother sharing her most precious child with another is a symbolic representation of our inter-connectedness, the the fact that we do not "own" another. We are all children of the one Father.

Wenda Gu : Art from Middle Kingdom to Biological Millennium

Wenda Gu : Art from Middle Kingdom to Biological Millennium
United Nations - Kilometers GALLERY
united nations -kilometers, a new installation will number twenty in his continuing united nations series. The series, an ongoing worldwide art project Gu began in 1993, consists of site-specific installations or "monuments" made of human hair collected from barbershops across the globe, which he presses or weaves, into bricks, carpets, and curtains. These monuments blend hair collected from different nations as a metaphor for the mixture of races that he predicts will eventually unite humanity into "a brave new racial identity." In addition, many of the monuments incorporate invented text that, by frustrating the viewer’s ability to read them, "evoke the limitations of human knowledge" and help prepare them for entry into an "unknown world." For united nations -kilometers, Gu will construct a "temple" using thin and colored human hair braids. The structure will be architectural in scale inviting viewers to pass through and under as well as residing briefly within the piece. The artist will stage an accompanying performance, united nations - we are united, in which community and students may participate.

Art Deco (1910-1939)

Art Deco (1910-1939)
Art Deco represented the rapid modernization of the world. While the style was already widespread and was in fashion in the United States and in Europe, the term Art Deco was not known. Modernistic or the "1925 Style" was used. The name Art Deco was derived from the 1925 Exposition Internationale des Arts Decoratifs Industriels et Modernes, held in Paris.
Art Deco was primarily an elegant design style dominant in decorative art, fashion, jewelry, textiles, furniture design, interior decoration, and architecture. It began as the Modernist follow-up style on Art Nouveau but more simplified and closer to mass production.
Different types of wood and precious metals, tortoise shell, lacquer, egg shell, shagreen, leather, a cross-fertilization of styles either imported from colonial empires and the Orient or borrowed from art history, all were the characteristic signs of this exceptional craftsmanship aimed primarily at a rich international clientele. It was an updated look based on very classical forms. It was a style "at once traditional and innovative". (Bayer)

Icy Art : Try A Freezing, Fun Paint Activity!
Icy Art : Try A Freezing, Fun Paint Activity!
What You Need:
• ice cube tray
• small pitcher
• spoon
• construction paper
• crayons
• newspaper
• paper towels
What To Do:
1. Place an ice cube tray in the sink and fill the pitcher with water. Encourage your toddler to fill the tray by pouring the liquid from the pitcher.
2. Together, put the tray into the freezer. Keep checking to see what happens to the water as it chills. Talk about the thin layer of ice that begins to form. Tap the frozen liquid with a spoon to see if it's solid.
3. While you're waiting for the water to freeze, invite your child to draw a picture on construction paper with the crayons.
4. Place some newspaper on a table. When the water has turned to ice, help your child twist the tray to pop some ice cubes onto the newspaper. What happens when you hold the cubes in your hands? Discuss how the warmth of your hands makes the ice melt — and become water again!
5. Have your toddler use an ice cube like a crayon to draw on a new piece of construction paper. The melting cube will leave watery marks behind. Encourage him to move the drippy ice cube all around the page to create great designs. If the ice cube is too cold to hold, cover it with a paper towel. How is the ice drawing different than the crayon drawing?
6. When your child has finished drawing, put the project aside to dry. Check on it from time to time to see what happens. When it's dry, your child may be surprised to see that his drawings have evaporated! Compare the crayon drawing and the ice drawing again.
Learning Benefits
• exploring the properties of water (freezing, melting, evaporating)
• fine-motor skills
