Want to learn or practice Mandarin, TaiChi?

by DW » Tue Mar 01, 2005 2:44 am

Hi all,

Are you interested in learning languages?

Would you like to learn or practice Mandarin and/or TaiChi?

I would especially love to hear from anyone

who has lived in China/Taiwan and know TaiChi / push-hands,

Thank you

Just get into a circle of friends who belong to those (Pacific Asian) countries, get to know their culture and you'll learn it along the way :)

I know a little Chinese, and quite a lot of Tagalog.

Try to learn the original Mandarin if you want to learn "Chinese" (the one they speak in Taiwan and Hongkong), its more "pure" than the one in mainland China.

Does the fullhyd discussion board support Big5 (Chinese fonts)? You can paste whatever you know in here if they do ;)

Thanks LW. I am back in Hyd after a long absence,

and hence don't know how to find such people here.

Actually, I know both Mandarin and TaiChi, and was

looking to keep up practice (and to improve).

>I know a little Chinese, and quite a lot of Tagalog

Great. Perhaps we can help each other learn.

I would be interested in a language exchange.

The mainlanders (especially Beijing people) consider their

own Mandarin more authentic/original. However, you are right about

the written characters. Taiwan and HK have the Traditional

Chinese Characters, whereas mainlanders use Simplified

Chinese Characters (jian ti zi) as Mao forced simplification

to educate the masses.

I don't know if fullhyd operators and users would appreciate

Chinese characters here. ;) Perhaps Telugu/Urdu, yes. :)

I am rusty on the Chinese characters, and use "pin yin" (official

transliteration/romanization scheme used in mainland China) to

post while chatting online.

Xie xie ni LW (thanks LW).

Jackal, technically speaking Hyd is full of Oriental people ;)

(I am kidding, I know by 'oriental' you mean Chinese,

but somehow people use 'oriental' or 'asian'

when they refer to Chinese/Japanese/Korean people).

the couple of Chinese people I

ran into don't know Mandarin (they speak a dialect

spoken in Taiwan).

Also, I am not necessarily looking for Chinese

people. I am sure there are Indians who are

interested in practicing/learning Mandarin or

TaiChi.

BTW, for a broader (and somewhat disturbing)

view of what "Orientalism" is, there is a good book by

Dr Edward Said by the same name.

there is a chapter of a national TaiChi club in hyderabad. in secbad, they practice/train at the Railways stadium, Mettuguda early mornings (certain days of the week). i think they also have classes at banjara hills or ameerpet...

abt chinese/mandarin. contact the chinese-hyderabadies who own many chinese restaurants in hydbad (few i can name now: Hai-King, ChungHua, Nanking and Alex's Kitchen). maybe they'd help u.

CAD, thanks for the information re. TaiChi in Secbad, and suggestions

to contact Chinese restaurants.

Hopefully craigslist (http://www.craigslist.org) will be opened

for Hyderabad sometime soon, as it has for Bangalore,

so that such information can be easily available.

DW was right on this in his earlier reply.

I think the word Oriental is used mainly for Pacific Asians. Some westerners consider middle-eastern people as orientals too.
