BLACK

by Sujatha » Fri Feb 18, 2005 10:39 pm

Day before yesterday we got the opportunity to see the movie BLACK.

This is a very bold step taken by an Indian director.

Mr. Sanjay has done a brilliant and painful job.

Even in medical field we don’t get the chance to deal with such blind people.

Definitely the film is not boring. Going smooth from the beginning.

After long long time, I am seeing a realistic Hindi movie.

Directors of Sanjays caliber only can try this.

In the final moments Amitabh Bachchan, suffers Alzheimer's. This is the same deadly disease that killed Ronald Reagan.

Amitabh has tried well.

I am waiting to hear.

Who will be getting national award for this movie.

A Must see movie.

Thanks. Screen 1. LV Prasad multiplex.

BIG surprise
Things are supposed to happen the way they happen. And the reason they happen the way the happen is because you try to make them happen in a certain way and may or may not be succesful.

What and why do you disagree Jasz?

I want to know your opinion on the movie.

I saw the movie and this is what I think/feel about it.

It was the story of a rich, blind, deaf, dumb girl, struggling to lead her life independently. Performance by Rani, Amitab and the little girl was excellent. Sanjay's way of putting it on screen was damn good.

Sameer and DQ, r u around? Would like to hear from you ppl also.

The first and only compliment I can give the movie is that I saw the movie with the same mindset that I'd see a Hollywood weepie. Any other hindi movie I normally watch with my mind completely shut down.

That said I'd blame Bhansali for making the same kind of movie that we call a bad hollywood senti film. A pseudo-chick-flick.

Amitabh and Rani both tried too hard to pull of a Hollywood-level performance but didnt quite succeed as well as the little girl did.

There were very few scenes that were really interesting (the entire parents-not-caring-about-other-sister sequence was definetly out of place moreso because there was no definite conclusion to it.

The entire color scheme of the movie though decent didnt quite make sense in the end, simply because I thought Bhansali read too much into that and repeatedly hammered us with his interpretation of the color Black and what he thinks it stands for. Things like this should be best left for open interpretation.

So my main grudge against the movie is consistent with my grudge against other hindi movies.......they ask you to leave your brains outta the door.

Also I cannot understand why the movie had a victorian setting

That I dont agree with.......it sure as hell wasnt boring.

If "interesting" means having songs at the drop of a hat, parallel comedy tracks and good for nothing sentiment and "live from the villian's den" scenes, then I guess I prefer the boring movies.

I saw Black a couple of days ago and i thought it was a pretty good movie ...infact i really appreciated the little girls acting ..it was amazing....better than both Amitabh Bachan n Rani mukherjee(they were pretty goo too)....

I liked the fact that it didnt have any songs in it..and the background music was excellent...

one thing i didnt get was...this was suppose to be in india right...then why did it look like it was London...and its a hindi film so why is everyone talkin in english..but i didnt mind..infact i thought that was good...

there were minor glitches but all in all..after a very long time i liked a bollywood movie to recommend it to others..

but i still think khamoshi was bhansalis best movie

Jasz,

Your insight into movies is definitely much deeper and farther than mine. I do agree to most of your points.

pseudo-chick-flick : may be the chick in the story might be pseudo but the hardships, the way the-differently-abled ppl see the world, etc was real. This, I suppose was the focus of the movie, which it delivered properly.

victorian setting : this even I wondered

entire color scheme: it was so decent that I didnt get the hammering feel. Heard a lot of money went into bringing that effect. Heard that the negative was edited and re-negated and then developed.

Amitabh, Rani and the girl : One thing to be kept in mind is, the girl was afresh. Ofcourse she did well. But Rani and Amitabh had to come out of their normal commercial movie groove and do this. They are not arty film artists but still delived a good stuff which is definitely appreciable.

Tha girl in the story atleast was so rich that she could afford a dedicated teacher. In real life, I come across many differently-abled ppl who just sturrugle to go on live their life, earn their living, etc. Their story is more pathetic and inspiring compared to the girl in the story.

Hello Fellas,

Good Morning. Here is my $0.02.

The movie is pretty much based on the life of Helen Keller. The performance by Amitabh, Rani and Ayesha was mind blowing. Music is out of the world.

Some of my friends called it a rona-dhona movie, I felt the emotions were expressed intensely, it was not rona-dhona. It is more of a theatre performance than masala mixed movie. It shows the passion that the teacher has for his teaching. It breaks all the barriers on what we can dream and shows that one can achieve it.

The music so original and innovative, it fills in for all the words unsaid and the songs unsung. The voice modulation by Amitabh, amazingly, varies from a whisper when teaching Michelle to a thunder when questioning the status quo of the university where they were seeking admission.

Hats off to Bansali, who created wonders in Devdas with all the colors and has again made a miracle with just the shades of black in Black. Want to call it a remake of "Miracle Worker", fine, so were lot of movies from "Shri 420" to "Aitraaz".

One thing I saw in Prasads Screen 4. Even after movie is over, no one is ready to move. And after few silent moments that was a applause from few. You dont get to see that in all movies.

I give it 10 over 10.
Let's get out of these wet clothes and into a dry Martini.

Yea, movie tickets are expensive in Delhi, it seems PVR charges 250/- per head and Forum in Banglore charges 500/- but it includes lunch/dinner

BLACK

BLACK

This is simply one of the better movies to have come out of the india in a very long time.... I would be compelled to say that after Pyaasa I have not seen a movie with soo many layers in it..

The story is a simple and yet a brilliant story of a teacher literally being the guiding light for this deaf and dumb girl and showing her the meaning of life and then she has been given the oppurtunity to serve her master in return... Tight characterisation is something that stood out and subtlety in bringing out the various aspects of nature most definetly appreciable...

I would hate to disect the movie for others but one particular scence I cant but appreciate.. there is a scence where for the 4th year in a row Michelle(Rani) fails to graduate becuase her typing speed is too slow.. she is soo pissed about it that she wants to give up studying and in anger starts to punch away in the braille typewriter the word BLACK furiously claiming BLACK to be the only thing in life for her.. but Mr. Sawhney(Big B) the teacher that he is notices that she is typing the fastest she has ever done and starts to time her and looks at the sheet emerging from the type writer impressed with the way she was typing... now for that second he sees the letters on the sheet to have been made of not just dots but dots in color like orange, red blue... showing that he as a teacher saw only color in the BLACK that michelle was typing away..

I was left speachless after that scence...

In the end I applaud the effort that has gone into making of this classic....

Saw the film. Would agree with most people here. Its really good. Tear-jerker but the movie has a soul.

Bhansali deserves more than just a Filmfare for this one. Bachchan ? The man's an institution by himself! Rani's fantastic too.
Whether you think you can, or you think you can't, you are right.

I didn't know meal+movie packages existed. How weird! Hindi movies are long as they are. If you had to have a meal, you would have to spend another couple of hours!
