Tech Talk

by ycr007 » Thu Feb 24, 2005 1:10 pm

Ok.This thread is for all the tech-related discussions and other nitty-gritties

that one encounters as one browses through the vast confines of the

World Wide Web.

Actually I wanted to name this thread as Browser Talk where I & other

users can take n give help regarding the kind of browsers that one uses.

The Browser I use is Firefox and sometimes I use Maxthon.Altough IE is the

most popular n Dominating Browser, the sheer functionality and upgradability

of these browsers make them a really good choice.

Coming to the point, there are numerous extensions available for FireFox.

Altough I can get them at related websites and by using Google,I wanted

to take the opinion of fellow users who have used that particular extension

and take help from them.

hehe, i used to use mousegestures extension (can't remember which version) for FireFox, just to confuse people. it looks great flying around with the mouse and opening and closing tabs, windows, etc.

I have no extensions installed currently, there are none i feel i have to have. some of the tab related ones are good, such as a close button on each tab, or the one that lets you move the tabs around order wise.

What email client do you use ycr?

When I used to use(sic) Opera I had installed Mousegestures but was fed up

of the ads that Opera produces...so I ditched Opera for Firefox.

In FF tho i don't us emousegestures. The most used Plugin is definitely

AdBlock and i do use ImageZoom allso once in a while.Bandwidth

tester is a good extension too.

Regarding Maxthon, the only thing i like in it better than Firefox is its speed

and the TabBrowsing facility which is much better than in FireFox.

Maxthon is the new name of MyIE browser. It has a "New Tab" button on the

Menu bar which makes easier to open a new tab.

Also there's a "Open Links in New Tab/Window" button which can be toggled.

FF does have "open new Tab" but it is generally cumbersome and involves

Clck or Ctrl-T.

Abt Email Client,I use Outlook Express for all my Hotmail A/c's.Fo other

Emails I had Thunderbird Installed but I rarely used it.hence Uninstalled

it.

Jus' a moment ago I found a plugin for FF which lets Images to be hosted

on imageshack directly. Will try it out n let u know.

I do not like windows file explorer and find myself cluttering the desktop with multiple open folders. And I retain the state of my open folders on system restart. So a search for the appropriate tool on the internet turned up ExplorerXP. It answered all my problems.

-> Tabbed Interface.

-> Can save folders as groups.

-> Opening ExplorerXP opens up the recently used folders. I put ExplorerXP shortcut in the startup folders, so it opens automatically. on system start

Here's a screenshot.

Firefox is great. And, no ycr, opening windows in tabs is not too much work in it either. You could ctrl+click as you said, or you could click with the mouse wheel or the center mouse button (if you have the archaic two button mouse, hey, that is not my fault). My favourite extension though is the web developer toolbar. It lets you disable anything - javascript, cookies, cache, anything with just one click. It displays header information, style sheets, form data, table layout - basically anything that a web developer needs.

But, FF is good only on a windows machine. Sadly, its Linux counterpart kinda sucks. My work PC currently has Mandrake Linux 10.1 Official installed on it, and I love it. The UI is very pleasing. Also, it comes with four default web browsers. My favourite, though, is Konqueror. It doubles up as a file system explorer, too, much the same like the windows explorer, only better. It has the tabbed browsing feature, the close button on each tab, the ability to rearrange tabs, splitting windows into frames, and a few other things that I have not fully exlored yet.

Netscape is also a browser that I like. Yes, it appears a little cumbersome to use at first, but it has a very good javascript console. And like all browsers other than IE, it also has the tabbed browsing feature. But, Netscape also comes with a mail client and an html editor.

That said, there are some sites that are strictly only IE compliant. Like it or not, IE is not going away anytime soon.

Nice one

by lonewolf » Fri Feb 25, 2005 2:34 am

Thanks ycr for this interesting thread! :)

I use Mozilla Firefox 1.0 (been using this on and off since its been known as Firebird. I use Microsoft Internet Explorer at times, usually when I have to access websites that have the This site can be viewed best with IE 6.0 on a resolution of blah blah blah notice.

At office I use a Windows XP computer and use both IE and Firefox. Firefox is definitely faster than IE on Windows.

The Firefox on Linux rocks too. I stopped using Konqueror long ago. The default Mozilla web browser is crappy and hogs a lot of memory

On my notebook, my default OS is 64 bit Debian with 32 bit Firefox. I use Gnome which has Epiphany web browser preinstalled. I wish I could install the 64 bit Firefox, supposedly 20% faster than the 32 bit Firefox which everybody uses, but there are no 64 bit plugins like Flash player, JVM, Quicktime, etc. So I'll stick with 32 bit for now.

One of my all-time favourite web browsers is Lynx, a text based browser and the fastest in the world. Links browser is also a good clone of Lynx.

I hope web developers would be more sensitive to the general cross-section of visitors and stick to the W3C standards, and not make their websites IE-only or something like that (remember how crappy Deccan Chronicle was until a while ago).

YEah..True!!! All those Exam-Signup_websites of different B Schools &
Universities display that warning and some even say "This application
Does not support Netscape Browser"

But at all other times I use FF.I have a gripe though.....Even though FF is
Default Browser, whenever i click on "New Mail Messages" in Yahoo
Messenegr,IE opens up.Any means to change it?

Hmm...Must try that one.....

And I picked up a Tweak on the net that makes FF run that Li'l bit faster
