Long ago, the day after Easter was one that Irish people eagerly looked forward to. Not only was it a favorite day for buying and selling livestock and merchandise at fairs and markets, it was also a time for enjoying sports, games, sideshows, dancing, eating, drinking, gambling, and perhaps, even some fisticuffs!

For many years, Easter Monday was also a holy day of obligation in the Roman Catholic Church. That meant one had to go to Mass and abstain from work. All well and good, except that the riotous behavior which often followed during the day and well into the evening didn’t sit well with the clergy. in 1828, the Bishop of Kildare and Leighlin, Dr. John Doyle, prevailed upon other bishops to petition the Pope to make Easter Monday an ordinary working day. The intention was to disassociate the Church from what was perceived as unseemly fun at the fair! The Pope granted the petition, so that from 1829, Easter Monday was no longer a holy day.

If the clergy had hoped that by making it an ordinary working day, the Irish would simply go back to their jobs, they were very much mistaken. For a long time, people kept what they called ‘the old holiday’ and honored the tradition of taking the time off to enjoy themselves.

From tugs of war to hurling matches and card games to reels and jigs, Easter Monday was always filled with fun and festivities. Eventually, however, the fairs began losing their joyful character and evolved into just another day of trade.

Centuries ago, before wedding ceremonies moved from the bride's house to the church steps, and finally into the church itself, the joining of a couple was often conducted in a place of mystical significance. On Cape Clear, Co. Cork, there is a townland called Comillane where you'll find a pillarstone known as Cloch na Gealluna - 'The Trysting Stone'. It has a hole right through it and in pre-Christian times, a couple would join hands through the stone and in the presence of the local king, they would wed. Similarly, at Kilmaolcheader church near Dingle, Co. Kerry, stands a pillar with a circular opening near the top. It's said that a couple is engaged if they join hands through the opening.

CHANDIGARH: By opting for Bhupinder Singh Hooda as the next Chief Minister of Haryana on Friday, the Congress party has opted for a younger, post-independence era leader from the state.

Hooda was born Sep 15, 1947 - just a month after India got independence from British rule - in Sanghi village of Haryana's Jat community dominated Rohtak district.

Hooda belongs to the politically dominant Jat community in Haryana. He is the Lok Sabha MP from Haryana - his fourth stint in the lower house.

Hailing from a family of agriculturists, Hooda was a lawyer by profession. He started his political career in Rohtak district in late 1960s and became block president of the Congress in 1972.

A law graduate who studied in the Panjab University here and Delhi University, he was elected to the Lok Sabha for the first time in 1991. He was re-elected to the Lok Sabha from Rohtak in 1996, 1998 and 2004.

He defeated Haryana Jat strongman Devi Lal thrice from the Rohtak constituency. His father Chaudhary Ranbir Singh was a member of the State Assembly a few times.

Hooda was made Haryana Congress president in 1997 and continued to be on the post till mid-2003 when Bhajan Lal replaced him.

But Hooda pipped Bhajan Lal to the Chief Minister's post on Friday. He was elected at a legislature party meeting in New Delhi attended by 50 Congress legislators.

State Congress president Bhajan Lal and legislators supporting him boycotted the meeting. Hooda is interested in sports and reading and is an ardent cricket fan.

He will have to resign his Rohtak Lok Sabha seat after taking over as Chief Minister and contest for a seat in the State Assembly within six months.

The deterioration of law and order in the wake of recent encounters, on which the TRS raised a hue and cry in the past, has no way found a mention in the members’ speeches,” he said.
# “We don’t think there is any such direction from the party leadership, but the members are going overboard to please YSR, perhaps for their own interests,” another TRS MLA in the disgruntled group said.
