Home Theater

by CtrlAltDel » Fri Feb 18, 2005 12:45 pm

hey guys...the God needs some help here.

i am plannig to buy a 5.1/6.1 home theater system with the follwoing config: 2 front spkr, 1 center spkr, 2/3 rear/surround spkr, subwoofer and receiver (amplifier).

i have shortlisted 3 brands: SONY, ONKYO, JAMO (pronounce 'Yamo') after listening to demos. No LGs, Samsungs, Phillips, Akai etc plz. none of them come near the above 3 in sound quality)

my budget is abt 30-40K and this means i have to go for the base versions in any of the above 3 brands.

is it possible to mix n match spkrs and recievers from more than one brand? this is coz i prefer wooden spkrs and only ONKYO, JAMO have a good range in wood (SOny's limited wooden range seems never to be available for demo at Sony World). and i love a sexy flat subwoofer from Jamo that cud be slipped under a sofa or hung on a wall like a decorative item.

can spkrs from one brand be coupled to a amp from another (Sony's amps are cheaper than, say Jamo's)...?

ONKYO is my last choice since my cuz already has one (i prefer exclusivity whereever possible 8) )

any ideas on how i can organize such a home theater system? plz suggest any other brands too...

once i set it all up (maybe in a month or 2) there wud be a Film Night/Evening at my place!

***********

demos seen at:

Sony World, Jubilee Hills

Onkyo, Lal Bungalow, Ameerpet

Cinebells (Jamo company showroom), above Barista, Banjara Hills

Jamo is a famous Danish brand that has recently come into India.
wtf? i no longer care if my posts hurt yr feelings

I can't provied you with On-Site Intel since you've done all the stuff already.

But By Previous Experience,Lemme ask u whether u intend to hook this up

to your PC or DVD/Music System at home?

I suppose it is really a Music System u wanna hook up but nevertheless.

Of Late I have been impressed with Altec Lansing's Range of PC Speakers,

But since ur requirement is within Sony,Jamo & Onkyo, Lemme suggest

Sony.

I have experienced the sound of a Sony 7.1 surround system which was

hooked up to a WEGA tv n DVD combo. This setup was housed in a custom-

built room with no windows etc so that the experience was really Awesome.

I shall let you know the model name shortly. It was arnd 33 K and since

that is within ur budget,it is no problemo. Onkyo I have heard of but have

never experienced. Jamo i am hearing for the first time.

Did you check out Bose?I didnt go to the Hyderabad Showroom, but I went to the US one, pretty impressive. And if you are willing to spend a little but more like 70K you can go for the better ones like Bang and Olufsen, the base model is kinda in between 60-70.

My home theater is Bose(Planning to go for B&O syytem next year).I got Bose speakers(I got a pretty cheap deal on ebay) and a Pioneer Amp and a Sony DVD Player. The TV is pretty crappy.

And yeah you can buy seperate parts and fit them together, but you need to get a particular brand of speakers otherwise there will be compatible issues.

The last time I went to the Onkyo showroom was 3 years ago and they dont have any good models, lilke they didnt release proper models in hyd. :D

Is this the Bose shop in Somajiguta? that place is expensive (and the salesmen dont have a clue) i went in there looking for a speaker set for my ipod, the guy gave me the most prepared speech i've ever heard (like he had been learning it off for years) then told me the price of the unit i was looking at (a nice little docking station type thing, the wattage of which he had no idea) was 26000 rs. a bit over the top for 2 small speakers joined together with a small subwoofer, even if it is all bose.

if its the duty why arent Jamo, Onkyo or Sony priced that high (they r high but not as much as Bose). i think bose has over priced its products to have an air of exclusivity. most of the clientele are the super rich. i dont think they have products for the middle class in India (maybe in US, they do). bose products are technically perfect and aesthitically designed too. they are very good....far better than Sony, Jamo or Onkyo.

also, they dont blindly sell u a home theater system. Bose engineers configure a perfect system, based on yr room dimensions and acoustics. in case u happen to redisign/change yr room sometime after purchase, u can have a free system reconfiguration done by their engineers to suit the newly designed room. their after sales service is top class too.

Tell you something? Do not go in for a branded system.

Me and Dad are music enthusiasts, always want more and more wattage. so, we have searched high and low and have come to these conclusions:

1. It is in the Amp. It is ALWAYS in the Amp.

2. Get a branded Amp with all the necesarry outputs (for Dolby/5.1/whatever).

3. The speakers, connections, etc, you can make on your own. Pickup any good sound-wala from the street, for example, the idiot who works for Hot Wheels (a car showroom at Koti) is a very very handy person, when it comes to sound systems.

It will be cheap, fun to make, made-to-order, and easy and cheap to mantain/repair. AND you can make it more powerful than ANY branded system.

Do not get sucked in by the PMPO quoted by the personnel at the showroom. Ask the per-channel RMS output. But i guess you will know about this already. (Sony is good, when it comes to clarity and powerful sound).

i had that idea earlier, but for that i need lotsa time, which i dont have :(

home theater output is always quoted in RMS, never PMPO.

Well, then go fer JAmO, but only if you know it is gonna be there in the market, otherwise the spare parts, after sales, etc will be a pain.

Hahahaha!!

I don't think that investing so much money in a Sound System is such a good idea (you would not be thinking of doing that anyway :)).

I would expect it to cost around 50-60K.
