Fleeting Time

Time flies by,

as if it has wings,

confusing the ignorant child,

who cannot play to his heart’s content.

He cries out loud,

”What’s the matter my child?”, asks the mother,

The child replies, “I cannot play enough!” ,

With my toys and friends.

The mother says, “Don’t weep my child.”,

For time does not wait for anyone,

Its upto us to make most of it everyday.

So spend time wisely

And you will be left with enough time,

For you to play and be happy.

Inspiration for the poem.

Sometime during the Fall of 2004, Sam reminded about a time-management seminar to be conducted on campus. So thinking about time-management, I concocted this poem.

perfect balance!!!!!!!!!!!!

by enigma » Mon Feb 07, 2005 12:06 pm

God was in the process of creating the universe. And he was

Explaining his subordinates......

"Look everything should be in balance. For example, after every 10

Deers there should be a lion.

Look here my fellow angels; here is the country of the United States

I have blessed them with prosperity and money. But at the same time I

Have given them insecurity and tension....

And here is Africa. I have given them beautiful nature. But at the

same time, I have given them climatic extremes....

And here is South America. I have given them lots of forests. But at

The same time, I have given them lesser land so that they would have to

cut off the forests... So you see fellows, everything should be in

balance.

One of the angels asked... "God, what is this extremely beautiful

country here?"

God said....... "Ahah...that is the crown piece of all. "INDIA", my

Most precious creation. It has understanding and friendly people.

Sparkling streams, serene mountains. A culture which speaks of the great

Tradition that they live. Technologically brilliant and with a heart of

Gold.....

The angel was quite surprised "But god you said everything should be

in balance." God replied - "Look at the neighbors, I gave them."

this is my second most fave poem by Robert Frost.

THE PASTURE

I'm going out to clean the pasture spring;

I'll only stop to rake the leaves away

(And wait to watch the water clear, I may):

I shan't be gone long. -- You come too.

I'm going out to fetch the little calf

That's standing by the mother. It's so young,

It totters when she licks it with her tongue.

I shan't be gone long. -- You come too.

An American Prayer

-James Douglas Morrison

Do you know the warm progress

Under the stars?

Do you know we exist?

Have you forgotten the keys

To the kingdom

Have you been borne yet

& are you alive?

Let's reinvent the gods,

All the myths of the ages

Celebrate symbols from deep elder forests

[have you forgotten the lessons

Of the ancient war]

We need great golden copulations

The fathers are cackling in trees

Of the forest

Our mother is dead in the sea

Do you know we are being led to

Slaughters by placid admirals

& that fat slow generals are getting

Obscene on young blood

Do you know we are ruled by t.v.

The moon is dry blood beast

Guerrilla bands are rolling numbers

In the next block of green vine

Amassing for warfare on innocent

Herdsman who are just dying

O great creator of being

Grant us one more hour to

Perform our art

& perfect our lives

The moths & atheists are doubly divine

& dying

We live, we die

& death not ends it

Journey we more into

The nightmare

Cling to life

Our passion'd flower

Cling to _ & cocks

Of despair

We got our final vision

By clap

Columbus groin got

Filled with green death

(i touched her thigh & death smiled)

We have assembled inside this ancient

& insane theatre

To propagate our lust for life

Flee the swarming wisdom

Of the streets

The barns are stormed

The windows kept

& only one of all the rest

To dance & save us

With the divine mockery

Of words

Music inflames temperament

(when the true king's murderers

Are allowed to roam free

A 1000 magicians arise in the land)

Where are the feasts

We are promised

Where is the wine

The new wine

(dying on the vine)

Resident mockery

Give us an hour for magic

We of the purple glove

We of the starling flight

& velvet hour

We of arabic pleasures's breed

ABRAHAM LINCOLN's LETTER TO HEADMASTER : A WORD TO TEACHERS

ABRAHAM LINCOLN's LETTER TO HEADMASTER : A WORD TO TEACHERS

Image

A letter written by Abraham Lincoln to the Headmaster of a school in which his son was studying. It contains an advice, which is still relevant today for executives, workers, teachers, parents and students.

A WORD TO TEACHERS

"He will have to learn, I know, that all men are not just and are not true. But teach him if you can, the wonder of books.. but also give him quiet time to ponder the eternal mystery of birds in the sky, bees in the sun and flowers on a green hillside.

In school, teach him it is far more honorable to fall than to cheat.....

Teach to have faith in his own ideas, even if everyone tells him he is wrong.

Teach him to be gentle with gentlepeople and tough with the tough.

Try to give my son the strength not to follow the crowd when everyone getting on the bandwagon...

Teach him to listen to all men; but teach him also to filter all he hears on a screen of truth, and take only the good that comes through.

Teach him, if you can, how to laugh when he is sad... Teach him there is no shame in tears.

Teach him to scoff at cynics and to be beware of too much sweetness.. Teach him to sell his brawn and brain to highest bidders, but never to put a price on his heart and soul. Teach him to close his ears to a howling mob.. and stand and fight if thinks he is right.

Treat him gently, but do not cuddle him, because only the test of fire makes fine steel. Let him have the courage to be impatient.. Let him have the patience to be brave. Teach him always to have sublime faith in himself, because then he will have faith in humankind.

This is a big order, but see what you can do. He is such a fine little fellow my son!"

You Are My Dream Come True
by Cheryl Ann

Always in my heart
you make me feel more loved
than I've ever felt
and happier than I've ever dreamed.
The love and understanding you have
is something I have searched for
my entire life.

Always in my happiest
and saddest moments,
you are my best friend and confidante.
I come to you for everything,
and you listen to me
without judgment.

Always, deep within my soul,
I know we have a love like no other.
What we share is something others
only hope for and dream of,
but few ever experience.
Our love is magical beyond belief.

Always, without hesitation,
you give of yourself completely.
You have reached the very depths of my soul,
bringing out emotions I never knew I had
and unveiling an ability to love
I never thought possible.

Always and forever
you will be my dream come true,
the one I have waited for all these years.
From now until the end of time,
I will love only you.
We will be together always.

Swami Vivekananda's Speeches

The World Parliament of Religions, Chicago

WELCOME ADDRESS - Chicago, Sept 11, 1893

Sisters and Brothers of America,

It fills my heart with joy unspeakable to rise in response to the warm and cordial welcome which you have given us. I thank you in the name of the most ancient order of monks in the world; I thank you in the name of the mother of religions, and I thank you in the name of millions and millions of Hindu people of all classes and sects.

My thanks, also, to some of the speakers on this platform who, referring to the delegates from the Orient, have told you that these men from far-off nations may well claim the honor of bearing to different lands the idea of toleration. I am proud to belong to a religion which has taught the world both tolerance and universal acceptance. We believe not only in universal toleration, but we accept all religions as true. I am proud to belong to a nation which has sheltered the persecuted and the refugees of all religions and all nations of the earth. I am proud to tell you that we have gathered in our bosom the purest remnant of the Israelites, who came to Southern India and took refuge with us in the very year in which their holy temple was shattered to pieces by Roman tyranny. I am proud to belong to the religion which has sheltered and is still fostering the remnant of the grand Zoroastrian nation. I will quote to you, brethren, a few lines from a hymn which I remember to have repeated from my earliest boyhood, which is every day repeated by millions of human beings: "As the different streams having their sources in different paths which men take through different tendencies, various though they appear, crooked or straight, all lead to Thee."

The present convention, which is one of the most august assemblies ever held, is in itself a vindication, a declaration to the world of the wonderful doctrine preached in the Gita: "Whosoever comes to Me, through whatsoever form, I reach him; all men are struggling through paths which in the end lead to me." Sectarianism, bigotry, and its horrible descendant, fanaticism, have long possessed this beautiful earth. They have filled the earth with violence, drenched it often and often with human blood, destroyed civilization and sent whole nations to despair. Had it not been for these horrible demons, human society would be far more advanced than it is now. But their time is come; and I fervently hope that the bell that tolled this morning in honor of this convention may be the death-knell of all fanaticism, of all persecutions with the sword or with the pen, and of all uncharitable feelings between persons wending their way to the same goal.

The World's Parliament of Religions has become an accomplished fact, and the merciful Father has helped those who laboured to bring it into existence, and crowned with success their most unselfish labour.

My thanks to those noble souls whose large hearts and love of truth first dreamed this wonderful dream and then realized it. My thanks to the shower of liberal sentiments that has overflowed this platform. My thanks to this enlightened audience for their uniform kindness to me and for their appreciation of every thought that tends to smooth the friction of religions. A few jarring notes were heard from time to time in this harmony. My special thanks to them, for they have, by their striking contrast, made general harmony the sweeter.

Much has been said of the common ground of religious unity. I am not going just now to venture my own theory. But if any one here hopes that this unity will come by the triumph of any one of the religions and the destruction of the others, to him I say, "Brother, yours is an impossible hope." Do I wish that the Christian would become Hindu? God forbid. Do I wish that the Hindu or Buddhist would become Christian? God forbid.

The seed is put in the ground, and earth and air and water are placed around it. Does the seed become the earth, or the air, or the water? No. It becomes a plant. It develops after the law of its own growth, assimilates the air, the earth, and the water, converts them into plant substance, and grows into a plant.

Similar is the case with religion. The Christian is not to become a Hindu or a Buddhist, nor a Hindu or a Buddhist to become a Christian. But each must assimilate the spirit of the others and yet preserve his individuality and grow according to his own law of growth.

If the Parliament of Religions has shown anything to the world, it is this: It has proved to the world that holiness, purity and charity are not the exclusive possessions of any church in the world, and that every system has produced men and women of the most exalted character. In the face of this evidence, if anybody dreams of the exclusive survival of his own religion and the destruction of the others, I pity him from the bottom of my heart, and point out to him that upon the banner of every religion will soon be written in spite of resistance: "Help and not fight," "Assimilation and not Destruction," "Harmony and Peace and not Dissension."

I Believe ---

by enigma » Thu Feb 10, 2005 11:51 am

I believe ---

We don't have to change friends if we understand that friends change.

No matter how good friends are, they're going to hurt you every once in a while and you must forgive them for that.

True friendship continues to grow, even over the longest distance. Same goes for true love.

You can do something in an instant that will give you heartache for life.

It is taking me a long time to become the person I want to be.

You can keep going long after you can't.

We are responsible for what we do, no matter how we feel.

Either you control your attitude or it controls you.

Heroes are the people who do what has to be done when it needs to be done, regardless of the consequences.

Money is a lousy way of keeping score.

My best friend and I can do anything or nothing and have the best time.

Sometimes the people you expect to kick you when you're down, will be the ones to help you get back up.

Sometimes when I'm angry I have the right to be angry, but that doesn't give me the right to be cruel.

Just because someone doesn't love you the way you want them to doesn't mean they don't love you with all they have.

Maturity has more to do with what types of experiences you've had, and what you've learned from them, and less to do with how many birthdays you've celebrated.

It isn't always enough to be forgiven by others. Sometimes you have to learn to forgive yourself.

No matter how bad your heart is broken the world doesn't stop for your grief.

Our background and circumstances may have influenced who we are, but we are responsible for who we become.

Just because two people argue, it doesn't mean they don't love each other. And just because they don't argue, it doesn't mean they do.

You shouldn't be so eager to find out a secret. It could change your life forever.

Two people can look at the exact same thing and see something totally different.

Your life can be changed in a matter of hours by people who don't even know you.

Even when you think you have no more to give, when a friend cries out to you, you will find the strength to help.

Credentials on the wall do not make you a decent human being.

The people you care about most in life are taken from you too soon.

What I Have Learned!!!!!!!!!!!!!

by enigma » Thu Feb 10, 2005 11:57 am

I Have Learned that...

... the best classroom in the world is at the feet of an elderly person.

... when you're in love, it shows.

... just one person saying to me, "You've made my day!" makes my day.

... having a child fall asleep in your arms is one of the most peaceful feelings in the world.

... being kind is more important than being right.

... you should never say no to a gift from a child.

... I can always pray for someone when I don't have the strength to help him in some other way.

... no matter how serious your life requires you to be, everyone needs a friend to act goofy with.

... sometimes all a person needs is a hand to hold and a heart to understand.

... simple walks with my father around the block on summer nights when I was a child did wonders for me as an adult.

... life is like a roll of toilet paper. The closer it gets to the end, the faster it goes.

... we should be glad God doesn't give us everything we ask for.

... money doesn't buy class.

... it's those small daily happenings that make life so spectacular.

... under everyone's hard shell is someone who wants to be appreciated and loved.

... the Lord didn't do it all in one day. What makes me think I can?

... to ignore the facts does not change the facts.

... when you plan to get even with someone, you are only letting that person continue to hurt you.

... love, not time, heals all wounds.

... the easiest way for me to grow as a person is to surround myself with people smarter than I am.

... everyone you meet deserves to be greeted with a smile.

... there's nothing sweeter than sleeping with your babies and feeling their breath on your cheeks.

... no one is perfect until you fall in love with them.

... life is tough, but I'm tougher.

... opportunities are never lost; someone will take the ones you miss.

... when you harbor bitterness, happiness will dock elsewhere.

... I wish I could have told my Dad that I love him one more time before he passed away.

... one should keep his words both soft and tender, because tomorrow he may have to eat them.

... a smile is an inexpensive way to improve your looks.

... I can't choose how I feel, but I can choose what I do about it.

... when your newly born grandchild holds your little finger in his little fist, that you're hooked for life.

... everyone wants to live on top of the mountain, but all the happiness and growth occurs while you're climbing it.

... it is best to give advice in only two circumstances; when it is requested and when it is a life threatening situation.

... the less time I have to work with, the more things I get done.

The red rose!!!!!!!!

The Red RoseImage
- A Meeting of the Heart

John Blanchard stood up from the bench, straightened his Army uniform, and studied the crowd of people making their way through Grand Central Station. He looked for the girl whose heart he knew, but whose face he didn't, the girl with the rose.
His interest in her had begun thirteen months before in a Florida library. Taking a book off the shelf he found himself intrigued, not with the words of the book, but with the notes penciled in the margin. The soft handwriting reflected a thoughtful soul and insightful mind. In the front of the book, he discovered the previous owner's name, Miss Hollis Maynell.

With time and effort he located her address. She lived in New York City. He wrote her a letter introducing himself and inviting her to correspond. The next day he was shipped overseas for service in World War II. During the next year and one month the two grew to know each other through the mail. Each letter was a seed falling on a fertile heart. A romance was budding. Blanchard requested a photograph, but she refused. She felt that if he really cared, it wouldn't matter what she looked like.

When the day finally came for him to return from Europe, they scheduled their first meeting - 7:00 PM at the Grand Central Station in New York. "You'll recognize me," she wrote, "by the red rose I'll be wearing on my lapel." So at 7:00 he was in the station looking for a girl whose heart he loved, but whose face he'd never seen.

I'll let Mr. Blanchard tell you what happened:

"A young woman was coming toward me, her figure long and slim. Her blonde hair lay back in curls from her delicate ears; her eyes were blue as flowers. Her lips and chin had a gentle firmness, and in her pale green suit she was like springtime come alive. I started toward her, entirely forgetting to notice that she was not wearing a rose. As I moved, a small, provocative smile curved her lips." "Going my way, sailor?" she murmured. "Almost uncontrollably I made one step closer to her, and then I saw Hollis Maynell. She was standing almost directly behind the girl. A woman well past 40, she had graying hair tucked under a worn hat. She was more than plump, her thick-ankled feet thrust into low-heeled shoes. The girl in the green suit was walking quickly away.

I felt as though I was split in two, so keen was my desire to follow her, and yet so deep was my longing for the woman whose spirit had truly companioned me and upheld my own.

And there she stood. Her pale, plump face was gentle and sensible, her gray eyes had a warm and kindly twinkle. I did not hesitate. My fingers gripped the small worn blue leather copy of the book that was to identify me to her. This would not be love, but it would be something precious, something perhaps even better than love, a friendship for which I had been and must ever be grateful. I squared my shoulders and saluted and held out the book to the woman, even though while I spoke I felt choked by the bitterness of my disappointment."

"I'm Lieutenant John Blanchard, and you must be Miss Maynell. I am so glad you could meet me; may I take you to dinner?"

The woman's face broadened into a tolerant smile. "I don't know what this is about, son," she answered, "but the young lady in the green suit who just went by, she begged me to wear this rose on my coat. And she said if you were to ask me out to dinner, I should go ahead and tell you that she is waiting for you in the big restaurant across the street. She said it was some kind of test!"

It's not difficult to understand and admire Miss Maynell's wisdom. The true nature of a heart is seen in its response to the unattractive. "Tell me whom you love," Houssaye wrote, "And I will tell you who you are."

Two Strategies To Avoid Disappointments

by HH » Sun Feb 13, 2005 1:24 pm

Two Strategies To Avoid Disappointments
* Disappointments are inevitable every day of the week. It’s impossible to live a disappointment free life.

# However if you make it a practice to “Avoid Assuming Anything” whenever possible, and “Never Take Anything For Granted,” you will decrease the number of disappointments and stress occurring events.

# I believe we all have a human tendency of assuming too much about life. We assume that individuals will come through on their promises without having to follow-up on them. Yet our assumptions have less than a 50% chance of being right. We assume that individuals will react in certain ways because we trust them and their judgment – only to be proven wrong time and again. We just down right assume too much, too often!

...

# As a business owner, I always kept neat, organized files on EVERY contract I entered into regardless if they were with employees, customers, vendors, banks or contractors. The ability to put my hands on old contracts or written agreements in minutes made or saved my company as much as a hundred thousand dollars in one single incident. Had I ASSUMED that every person or entity was going to live up to their word, my company would have been less successful and I certainly would have been more frustrated and disappointed than necessary.

...
# Once you learn about, and personally experience the rewards of follow-up, your life will become more organized and your daily disappointments will diminish. You will still experience disappointments with casual, one time interactions. However, your interactions in longer term relationships seem to get better with time.

# Over the years, I have known lots of individuals who have had one catastrophe after another happen to them. They always seem to be in some type of jam and they begin to believe that they have been stricken by some negative voodoo. If you talk to them long enough to evaluate why their lives are filled with mishaps, you may learn that they leave just about everything in life to chance. They just assume too much! While doing so, their odds are like playing blackjack in a casino. They almost always walk away a loser.

# Life’s interactions do not have to be this way. You have a choice to be more organized and assume less, to insure that you don’t end up like the individual who always leaves the casino without their chips. You need to calculate risks quickly in all interactions and take every precaution necessary to avoid being disappointed by making false assumptions.

# Further, “Never Taking Anything For Granted.”... you should always value relationships and all the simple things about your life. Don’t ever lose anything of value by taking them for granted.

A TRUE STORY

by enigma » Mon Feb 14, 2005 6:35 pm

His name is Bill. He has wild hair, wears a T-shirt with holes in it, jeans and no shoes. This was literally his wardrobe for his entire four years of college. He is brilliant. Kind of esoteric and very, very bright. He became a Christian while attending college.

Across the street from the campus is a well-dressed, very conservative church. They want to develop a ministry to the students, but are not sure how to go about it. One day Bill decides to go there. He walks in with no shoes, jeans, his T-shirt, and wild hair. The service has already started and so Bill starts down the aisle looking for a seat.

The church is completely packed and he can't find a seat. By now people are really looking a bit uncomfortable, but no one says anything. Bill gets closer and closer and closer to the pulpit and when he realizes there are no seats, he just squats down right on the carpet. (Although perfectly acceptable behavior at a college fellowship, trust me, this had never happened in this church before!) By now the people are really uptight, and the tension in the air is thick.

About this time, the minister realizes that from way at the back of the church, a deacon is slowly making his way toward Bill. Now the deacon is in his eighties, has silver-gray hair, and a three-piece suit. A godly man, very elegant, very dignified, very courtly. He walks with a cane and as he starts walking toward this boy, everyone is saying to themselves, You can't blame him for what he's going to do. How can you expect a man of his age and of his background to understand some college kid on the floor?

It takes a long time for the man to reach the boy. The church is utterly silent except for the clicking of the man's cane. All eyes are focused on him. You can't even hear anyone breathing. The people are thinking.

The minister can't even preach the sermon until the deacon does what he has to do. And now they see this elderly man drop his cane on the floor. With great difficulty he lowers himself and sits down next to Bill and worships with him so he won't be alone. Everyone chokes up with emotion.

When the minister gains control he says,"What I'm about to preach, you will never remember. What you have just seen, you will never forget. Be careful how you live. You may be the only Bible some people will ever read."

THE REAL MEANING OF PEACE

by enigma » Tue Feb 15, 2005 7:04 pm

There once was a king who offered a prize to the artist who would paint the best picture of peace. Many artists tried. The king looked at all the pictures. But there were only two he really liked, and he had to choose between them.

One picture was of a calm lake. The lake was a perfect mirror for peaceful towering mountains all around it. Overhead was a blue sky with fluffy white clouds. All who saw this picture thought that it was a perfect picture of peace.

The other picture had mountains, too. But these were rugged and bare. Above was an angry sky, from which rain fell and in which lightning played. Down the side of the mountain tumbled a foaming waterfall. This did not look peaceful at all.

But when the king looked closely, he saw behind the waterfall a tiny bush growing in a crack in the rock. In the bush a mother bird had built her nest. There, in the midst of the rush of angry water, sat the mother bird on her nest - in perfect peace.

Which picture do you think won the prize? The king chose the second picture. Do you know why?

"Because," explained the king, "peace does not mean to be in a place where there is no noise, trouble, or hard work. Peace means to be in the midst of all those things and still be calm in your heart. That is the real meaning of peace."

Was It You?????????

by enigma » Tue Feb 15, 2005 7:08 pm

Someone started the whole day wrong
Was it you?
Someone robbed the day of its song
Was it you?

Early this morning some one frowned
Someone sulked until others scowled
And soon harsh words were passed around
Was it you?

Some one started the day aright
Was it you?
Some one made it happy and bright
Was it you?

Early this morning, we are told
Some one smiled and all through the day
This smile encouraged young and old
Was it you?

Failure

by enigma » Wed Feb 16, 2005 11:30 am

Failure doesn't mean you are a failure...
it does mean you haven't succeeded yet

Failure doesn't mean you have accomplished nothing...

it does mean you have learned something

Failure doesn't mean you have been a fool...
it does mean you had a lot of faith

Failure doesn't mean you have been disgraced...
it does mean you were willing to try

Failure doesn't mean you don't have it...
it does mean you have to do something in a different way

Failure doesn't mean you are inferior...
it does mean you are not perfect

Failure doesn't mean you've wasted your life...
it does mean you've got a reason to start afresh

Failure doesn't mean you should give up...
it does mean you should try harder

Failure doesn't mean you'll never make it...
it does mean it will take a little longer
