I watched the match on StarSports.Well played Sania.....

Though was outplayed in the First set,she rallied well and

even had Serena is a spot of bother in the Second set.

In the end the more experienced player won but Sania can surely

take heart from her Performance......Kudos to her...

I Surprised Myself:Sania Mirza

by ycr007 » Sat Jan 22, 2005 1:56 am

I surprised myself: Sania Mirza

Melbourne, January 21: Indian sports' new pin-up girl Sania Mirza today

said she surprised herself with her gallant performance against American

superstar Serena Williams at the Australian Open Grand Slam and would

not settle for any thing less than a top-10 ranking in her career.

Sania, ranked 166 in the world and playing in the main draw as a wildcard

, went down 1-6 4-6 in 57 minutes but more than lived upto her

expectations as she matched the six-time Grand Slam champion stroke for

stroke midway through the second set.

The 18-year-old from Hyderabad said she had proved that she had the

potential to become a world-beater. "I'm really happy because although

people have spoken about potential and I have always believed in myself,

you never know for sure until you play the best," Sania told PTI in an

interview here.

“Regardless of ranking I believe she is the world's best player and I am

happy that I could compete. I showed that I can really play at a top 10

level if I keep improving.

Not that I have anything against the girl, infact I like her game...but this was worse than blasphemy.

Guest editing yesterday's STOI (Sunday Times of India), our girl had the audacity to say that it was her Wimbledon junior triumph that gave India a place of pride in the hallowed grass of England and they didn't even know what the Indian flag looked like.

With all credit due to her achievements, this was an insult to past greats starting from Ramanathan Krishnan (Junior Wimbledon champ, Semi Finalist at Wimbledon Men's singles & once World No. 3); Vijay Amritraj (Twice Qtr-Finalist at the Men's singles @ Wimbledon, twice ATP Masters season ending champ and the greatest tennis player India has ever produced); Ramesh Krishnan (Wimbledon Junior champ); Leander Paes (Wimbledon Junior Champ & Men's doubles champ) and Mahesh Bhupathy (Wimbledon Men's doubles champ). Furthermore, talking of giant killing, Leander has beaten the then undisputable numero uno of tennis and probably the greatest ever, Pete Sampras.

And shame on the part of STOI to have gone ahead and published this infamy. They owe all sports lovers an apology.

P.S. : The same letter has also been sent to the editor of TOI, but as I've experienced before, such criticism is beyond what they can take and the letter won't be published.
